Set your microwave to 50% power to reduce the buildup of heat on the resin, and have it rotate on a plate (make a wood one) so that the microwave functions as intended

Very true! In fact, there's a fun experiment you can do with a microwave and drives of cheese on toast - take the turntable out, place the cheese on toast on a plate or bowl, upside down so it doesn't spin, then microwave for a minute. The cheese will melt in spots and stay solid elsewhere. The distance between melted spots is the wavelength of the microwave radiation! That's why it needs to rotate to give even heating. And why microwaves back in the 1980s did weird things to reheated coffee if you didn't stir it!

The inside of the epoxy is a little pressure pot. With no room for the air to expand while it is being heated, it will break the epoxy once the internal pressure exceeds the tensile strength of the epoxy. If you had put a pin hole in second popcorn mold, the one with the cavity in it, the pressure would have escaped and popcorn would have popped. Love watching the different things you do with epoxy. Pretty cool, keep it up.

Air only expands so much. But water to gas expands by an incredible factor. So it was the moisture in the popcorn, not just the air.

Too cool..... when you were doing the light bulb experiment so many ideas went through my head . Like leaving the end that you screw into the socket of the light bulb exposed but make a resin shell around the bulb and add some color pigment... it would make for a early '70s trippy ambience in a man cave !

Hey Ben I used to do flat roofing sometimes if we had to do a job quick we'd use extra hardener to get the resin to set quicky we'd call this a hot coat as it would get very hot it would work great when spread thinnly over a large area once I mixed up to much and put the bucket in the skip while it was still curring it got so hot the skip caught on fire why not try the corn in a resin mix with extra hardener I'm pretty sure the heat generated will make it pop unless oxygen is a factor .

The pressure in the pressure pot might inhibit popping. Degassing then putting the popcorn in might, though.

Popcorn pops because the heat causes the gas on the inside of the kernel to expand and pressurize until the shell can no longer hold the pressure. Since you put the kernel and resin in the pressure pot, the pressure in the pot helped the shell stay together, since the pressure differential of the inside the shell vs the inside of the pressure pot was not as high. You should try using the resin to pop another kernel without using a pressure pot, or even better, try curing the resin in the vacuum chamber with the kernel inside.

Okay the egg thing was naaasty. But the lightbulb thing got me to thinking of what happens when grapes are put in the nuker. Another option might be to put a match head next to a tiny piece of folded foil in a tiny void in resin and pop it in the nuker (since the egg experiment demonstrates that you clearly like to live dangerously) :)

17:08 you could solder thin copper wires to the led bulb, cast it in some really cool looking resin art, then solder some sort of connection to the copper wires where they come out of the top/back/bottom of whatever you cast and you have a cool looking floating light bulb that looks like its not screwed in or connected to anything.

Hey Ben, not sure if you've ever come across silica crystals? I'd love to see an experiment using flowers or plants dried in silica crystals, then encased in resin. I have no idea if it would work, but flowers and leaves look spookily fresh when dried using silica, so it could look like a living plant held in resin?

I was wondering if you put a teaspoon of MEKP into the same set up as the match. As it has 2 of the 3 elements of the fire triangle and just needs heat to ignite. It could be a little dangerous as I am not sure how much gas it will generate as it burns. It may be a little bang or a big bang.

On the popcorn explosions, they release steam that if some are smoking the temperature is maybe 600 degrees which will give a saturated steam pressure of over 1500 psi.! More than enough to split the container. Try it again with the kernels completely submerged in resin. Also the same with the match completely submerged to see how it ignites without any air.

Yeah, popcorn pops because the cause the air to expand inside the kernel to the point it cracks the shell. The resin pressure is way greater than the air pressure so you'd have to crack the resin to release the pressure, which you saw happen in the microwave. You can't change the physics. XD
@markjust86
@markjust86 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah so doing it in a vacuum chamber rather than a pressure pot might help?
@wolfhors3_660
@wolfhors3_660 2 жыл бұрын
@@markjust86 probably not, as the hardened resin will be sealed like a spacecraft. Only when the air is hot enough to create more pressure than the resin can hold, then the resin fails and cracks.
