Jazz at the Pawnshop, OMG thank you so much! I first heard this in a Hi-Fi dealership back in the late 1970's but never knew or couldn't remember the name. I have searched for decades to rediscover this recording. This was an unexpected gift to me!

I heard a song twice within a close proximity when I was a young kid. Never heard it again. Didn’t know the name of the song or the artist. I only remembered they sang something about Maxwell. I thought maybe it was just an old Maxwell House coffees commercial. Fast forward 20 years. I’m at a bar looking for a song on the jukebox, when I see a song called Maxwell’s Silver Hammer by the Beatles. My heart leapt into my throat. I pressed play and BOOM! Twenty years of searching lol It’s a great feeling

Much love for Take Five. I first heard it when I was a kid, about 50 years ago. I've listened to it literally thousands of times over the years, and it never gets old. Same magic with every replay. I loved how it was used in Pleasantville.

Ron, thanks for just being you today. This is why I love you from the day you started your channel! You love music, and it’s shows what a humble and honest guy, husband, and father you are! Great LPs! Want a laugh! My father bought me my first drum set when I was in 5th grade for Christmas. As I waited for the excitement of Christmas morning to slow so I could que up Alice Cooper, The Killer LP. My father calmly walked in took it off the turntable and put on Take Five! Turned to me and said “ there, now learn how to play!” And keep that shit off my turntable! Thanks for the memory my friend.

Funny that I'm now 40 years later hear Jazz at the pawnshop... My childhood friends dad was playing this record often when I was at their place! He always talked about it as he was in the audience at the recording of the gig at the famous jazzclub "Stampen" in Stockholm ("Stampen" a slang word for a Pawnshop in Swedish)! I had forgot this record as I havent heard it on at least 30 years! 2 Swedish records out of five is not bad!😁

Cantate domino was recorded in Sweden. I heard "Julsang" on a reel to reel in the 70's at a hifi show through electrostatic speakers. Blew my mind then - still does. Very old but great choice.Cantate Domino and Jazz at the Pawnshop are both Swedish on the Proprius label in fact. Sad that such old recordings have still not been bettered today.

David, that's a real shame, "gotten to the point where it's less about the music and more about the recording", that's just the opposite for me, if the music doesn't touch me in someway it's not something I would go out of my way to listen to no matter how great the recording is.

When I was still making recordings the comment I heard the most was that people were not used to turning the volume knob way more then they were used to. I always responded that if you want the recording to be a re-enactment that it was neccesary, if you wanted it to be just a postcard then I could just normalize it.

When I first got into audio the go-to audiophile record, for dealers trying to impress would be customers, was Sheffield Labs vinyl Dave Grusin's Discovered Again. When I got back into audio years later it had been replaced by Patricia Barber's Café Blue. Sound quality on Jazz at the Yawnshop is top notch but just too boring for me. I do agree that, to some extent, Kind of Blue is THE jazz album for people who don't like jazz. But for me Kenny Burrell's Midnight Blue is even more accessible. Not one offending note on that one and the whole album just flows and grooves.

Kind of blue is s masterpiece of musicality and recording methods. Steely Dans "Gaucho" is another one of my go to records for clean production. "Speaking in melodies" by Michael Ruff would also be on my list.

Hi Ron great choice. Personally, I'd add Bob James Earl Klugh's LP - One on One. I have a copy from a digital master recorded in Tokyo on CBS/SONY label in 1979 (Cat. 30AP 2258). Simply an amazing LP. Also, Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section [Vinyl] is also a good choice.

For someone who doesn't like jazz there are a lot of jazz records there. But your right they are some pretty amazing records.

Have the Dave Brubeck and the Miles Davis shown here. Agreed. They might be "cliche" but they're phenomenal recordings and mores the point, I genuinely enjoy the music! A record that has been in my collection for years, largely ignored but recently re-discovered and sounds just fantastic is Johnny Guitar Watsons "A Real Mother" album. Near mint vinyl copies can be found for next to nothing but it's a really open sounding recording. A genuine surprise. You have to pick what you play after it carefully so as not to be disappointed. Give it a go. Also, honourable mention to anything from Earnest Ranglin's "Below The Bassline" album. The album itself (pretty rare now) or any of the 45 re-issues doing the rounds the last few years. Beautifully recorded...and a stone groove hehe

Speaking of Sachmo...Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. Ella and Louis record. So natural sounding. Buddy Rich, Ray Brown and Oscar Peterson in the rhythm section. Among the best sounding tracks in my collection.

I have all those except Cantate Domino, had a quick listen and yep you are correct! Must spend some time and really listen to this one. I always liked Rebecca Pidgeon Spanish Harlem for uber audiophile sound, never get tired of that one. I also enjoyed the followup to Jazz at Pawnshop as well.

It always makes me chuckle a bit when someone makes a blanket statement, "I don't like jazz". The reason why is, jazz comes in so many forms that are so disparate from each other, they actually sound like different genres. Sure, the albums that were listed in this vid all sound like what the vast majority of people would point to as being jazz. But then you have things like, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Brand X, Return to Forever, which can be as heavy as any metal. Or chamber jazz, like Oregon, Eberhard Weber, and so many artists on the ECM label, which can be so intricate, with a lot more interplay between musicians and not really swing. Or free jazz, which can sound chaotic at first glance, but upon further listening, can really swing, in a less than literal manner. Or the very recent genre of jazz-metal, which has jaw dropping musicianship, extreme complexity and heaviness. Bands like Panzerballet, Counter-World Experience, Exivious.

Exactly right. Same with "classical" or even "rock." When I hear someone say, "I don't like jazz," it often means, "I'm not interested in hearing something new."

So right. You have dixieland, Swing, Miles Davis, Large stage bands like Maynard Feguson and his big band. Small club ensembles. Guys like Chris Botti and Dave Koz that play a more approachable, main stream jazz. I am lucky enough to live near New York City and go to the Jazz at Lincoln Center venue where they have 3 different listening spaces. A large theater for listening to big bands, a smaller venue for more intimate performances and Dizzy's club Coca cola which is a night club setting where you can eat and drink while enjoying great jazz.

For many people there are simply not enough hours in the day to explore the amount of music you are obviously interested in, so they wouldn't even be aware of all the 'hybrid/mixed/variations of 'Jazz' you mentioned...If they really don't like the sounds they hear on 'traditional' Jazz albums like on this list, they are unlikely to explore and/or be interested in those other 'genres' IMO...'I don't like oil paintings'- you could have a chuckle and go off on a tangent with that statement too, but it's really not hard to understand...

Thanks so much for making and sharing this video. I was already very familiar with #2, 4, and 5 - all being among my favorites as well. My curiosity being piqued, I was prompted to give a listen to the other two (Cantate Domino & Jazz at the Pawnshop), which I had never heard prior to watching this video. I was truly grateful to have listened to both of them, and more than happy to add these to my library. I acquired UHD digital versions for now, but intend to purchase Vinyl versions eventually. I listened to these recordings initially through a decent headphone system (phones, dac, and amp) and I would consider both of these to be true audiophile gems! But, I would agree with you, "JAZZ AT THE PAWNSHOP" is on another level!! - Best audiophile listening experience I've had in quite some time, and one of the best ever! From the moment it started, I couldn't stop listening until I had heard the entire album roughly 1.5 hours later! Thanks again, Ron This was exceptional!
