I got my ball python, Ash, when I was 12-ish, and had to leave him at home when I went to college. Yeah ball pythons are definitely the best choice because you can do something with them holding on to you, most other shakes I’ve held aren’t really that easy, for instance a corn snake will just try to get away from you , very quickly and boas are able to hold on and chill with you as well but there just not as easy to take care of really once at full size ball pythons are kinda a perfect beginner animal and thanks to all the morphs they will always stay relevant in the reptile enthusiast community if you’re willing to spends more money on a high end morph.

@@arasartsandjewelry7647 My Kenyan Sand Boa was the planned snake. My ball python was an impulse adoption (the previous owner couldn't care for him anymore) but one I definitely don't regret. I'd like to get a dumeril's boa next. From WWR's video on them and from the research I've done on them, they seem like the perfect snake for me. Big but not TOO big, slow, and docile, and with me living in Florida the heat and humidity requirements should be pretty easy. My local pet shop recently had a Brazilian rainbow boa for sale which was amazing and frustrating because I don't have the money or equipment for one.

Matt Reid, They did, by allowing their child to have a reptile. So if that reptile doesn't do well, the parents are indirectly responsible for it. It also depends on the age of the child, and how responsible the child is. With children under a certain age, you just can't expect them to understand how an animal should be kept correctly without help from their parents.

i'm currently 12 and have 6 reptiles, although my parents buy most of the supplies to care for them and the animals themselves, i'm the one that takes full responsibility for them and cares for them in every way. I do tons of research before getting any pet and so far i'd say i'm doing a good job to keep my pets happy and thriving. I give them the proper diet with a variety of dusted insects, give proper UVB and heating lighting as well as keep the temps and humidity on point. I also give all my pets a bigger enclosure that is recommended as the minimum. I even handle a lot of them daily and work with them. I have a children's python, green anole, russian tortoise, garter snake, pictus gecko, and a jumping spider!

I have a kingsnake (California king, about 2 years old) and I can definitely confirm that she is super food oriented. She’s bit me once, and it was a feeding response to the finger. They are excellent pets and eat well, but I agree that that would traumatize a kid. I work with reptiles and had worked with kingsnakes prior. I’ve noticed they go through a particularly voracious phase and chill out when they mature. They might be a good second snake for someone-a step up from corn snakes for sure.

Funny story about a king snake: I went camping when I was little ( about 8 or 9 ) and it was really hot that day ( I used to live in Northern California), so I went to the creek to cool off. I put my feet in the water and closed my eyes, and (what I believe was ) a yellow California Kingsnake coiled up my leg. I wasn't expecting it and jumped and the poor snake went flying. I found it again and it just slithered right over to me, and I picked it up and he was so chill. But I agree, not for children. Also, don't pick up wild snakes kids lol.

Got my 9 almost 10 yrs old a blue tongue skink, Slytherin is AMAZING and actually will look at my son when he talks to him. He's amazing, so docile and my son literally hangs out with him every day after school he does homework or watches tv. He actually cleans his cage every week and even when he goes to his dads, will call me to video him to make sure Slytherin is good. Lol had him a year now and its a daily ritual of make sure his humidity is good, he's set with all the Temps and the lights are good. I honestly thought I'd be the one with a reptile within 3 months and totally didn't mind having him. I'm so glad my son loves him so much! I love turtles, used to have a softshell that was my favorite thing ever behind an adult green iguana. You're absolutely right about them being a lot of work and that most kids (and adults) would zone out pretty fast, I was the exception in the house. Nobody else wanted him, but I'd watch him for hours, so he got his food and water changes. I think it's good to get a pet that matches the kid's activity level, personality, and responsibility level; turtles are rarely that pet.

I truly love my bearded dragon, he's a very chill guy and I can trust him with my kid. My leopard gecko is great too, but he is not happy with being handled, very bitey if you try, so no kids get to touch him. He's fun to watch eat, though. He's lightning fast and it cracks my son up. I'd love to add a snake to my collection, but I'm undecided on a king or a corn for the reasons you stated. King's captured my heart when I was a kid but I think getting a corn is the better option, at least until I get more confident with snake care.

I work at a pet store. I see tons of parents getting pets for their kids thinking the care is easy and the kid can take care of it. They don’t want to listen when I or a coworker give them much needed advise. Most people severely underestimate the needs of reptiles. I had to sell a chameleon to a lady and her daughter. They knew the chameleon would need high humidity and ventilation, they already had a reptibreeze cage. I tried to convince them to get a crested gecko because they’re the closest we had. They said they would spray it during the day and it would be fine. Couple months later it died.

The TURTLE ONE. People think they're easy, but they're really not. I have two ( a 5 inch red eared, and a 2 inch yellow belly) they're in a 75 gal with a heater, filter, and an above tank basking cage and a floating basking spot below. They get water changes once a week and they're about to need a tank upgrade. They're not cheap, and most people who do have turtles don't even know how to care for them properly.

My 10yo daughter has a corn snake called Oliver Twist. He's a baby, a foot long and barely thicker than a pencil. He's also an angry little SOB who buzzes his tail at all and sundry, strikes if you look at him funny, and properly latched onto my little girl's hand trying to eat her (and when removed, tried to eat her again minutes later). Oliver Twist is a replacement for Fred, her first corn snake, who turned out to be a non-eater and starved his poor little self to death right out of the egg. We learned very quickly that "corn snakes are as docile as teddy bears" and "corn snakes are such good eaters they'd eat their own shadow" are both myths. But like, if you're getting a snake, what do you expect? You're not buying a Labrador puppy. They're not that kind of pet. Kids should be well able for a spicy attitudey snake. If they get freaked out from a harmless species of snake biting them (or indeed, to a puppy nipping them, a kitten scratching them or a rooster pecking them) to the point that they're traumatised for life, they're responding to fears the parents have installed in them from their own panic and hysteria, not the actual threat which is non-existent. Children are not born afraid of snakes or spiders. We as parents teach them to be afraid because we overreact.

Definitely agree with turtles They're big and messy, so they need a big enclosure with regular maintenance, plus they live for decades making them a big commitment Red ear sliders are a shining example of this as they're often sold as cute little babies that get too big, so people end up releasing them in the wild, and now they're invasive because of it (I actually got a baby red ear myself as a kid, and we ended up having to dig a pond for her in our backyard when she got too big for her 40 breeder)
