Nice list of badgers. I see some of these a lot in the sotd pics. I've only tried the HMW on this list and I agree it's an awesome knot. I have a few gelled ones and as long as it's not too gelled they are nice. Have a great week
@Tobins_throwbacks11 ай бұрын
Thanks, Mike! I agree, the ones that are lightly gelled can be great. I've had too many that have had tips break off. Even a little gel damages the hair and shortens its life expectancy. Have a good week!

Nice! That Razor Emporium knot looks really nice. I just have a few badger brushes, but they're pretty good and I know the knots are all over the place. Brushes are a real grey zone and badger takes that to a whole new level. Also just using it once will only give you an idea of what it's like and you won't know fully until it's broke in. Yeah, those are just some of the reasons I went down the synthetic path. Talking about badgers does make me wonder what the fur is like with some of the other animals in that tree. Wolverine, Pine Martin, skunk, etc. I might have to hand tie a wolverine knot and see-lol! Have a good one!
@Tobins_throwbacks11 ай бұрын
I LIKE your thinking! Wolverine would be badass, now you got me wondering. I saw an old article once, I'll have to see if I can't find it. Have a good one Ian!

I think sometimes when there's a product that's been around for a very long time, nobody bothers to really look into that product and ask any questions. Why badger? Is it the best hair? Do they have more of those hairs grouped in an area? Was it because it was an easy animal to get? Is it an easy animal to raise? For all we know skunk might have the perfect combination of hairs for a lathering brush-lol!@@Tobins_throwbacks

Great top 5. Just recently got into badger brushes. Do you have a top boars brush video?
@Tobins_throwbacks11 ай бұрын
Thank you! I have not, just because I don't have that many boars. I think I have like 6ish. I actually just purchased another one the other day a Semogue Owners Club we with 90% Tops bristles

After I have thay new knot for a while I do have a video idea. I want to explore the common misconception regarding there only being one grade of boar. Semogue for example offers 3 grades

Ah hell...I just counted. 12 Boar, 3 mixed fiber (badger/boar) with that new boar on the way. Lol

@@Tobins_throwbacks nice. I hear the Semogue mixtura is a great brush for the money. I only have Semogue boar brushes and one proraso brush that came with the travel shave kit for proraso. It did work great for a tiny brush on the trip I used it on.

My Grizzly Bay 26mm High Mountain white or silver tip is set lower similar to the 4th brush shown and I can’t seem to build good lather with it?! What does “gelling” a brush do? Any tips on building lather with a high density knot? Tried my Edwin Jagger 24mm knot for comparison with the same soap and built a highly dense and hydrated lather…?!
@Tobins_throwbacks3 ай бұрын
@@RobertLaTuso Hey Robert so the knot that is likely in your grizzly Bay is a Fanchurian, correct? Gelling is when they bleach the tips and when wet they "gel". In the long run it damages the tips and makes it so the knot won't last as long. The tips can actually break and fall off. Do you load from the tub or scoop? My first recommendation might be to suggest more soap if you aren't already doing that and then allow a little more time to build the lather.
@RobertLaTuso3 ай бұрын
@Tobins_throwbacks Fanchurian? 🤷♂️ It does have a fan or bulb shape It is a White Mountain Badger and Not gelled. I scoop 1/4 tsp of soap into a captains choice bowl and use 10-15ml water. Since the knot sits lower in the handle it has a strong backbone (that’s when it resists being pushed down or splayed…correct?) it holds a lot of water even when squeezed out but doesn’t distribute the lather on My face as well. When splayed on face, there is a “suction cup” effect and most lather is on the outside of the brush. My Edwin Jagger brush which has very light backbone and is less dense, painted huge volumes of lather on my skin quite easily and required double the amount of water with the same amount of soap?!
