They're all under US$400 if you buy them online, and you can even get them cheaper if you buy used (something I recommend if you want to dip your toes into any new hobby).

what are your thoughts on a pioneer ddj 400 for a first deck, I've heard from people that on a 200 you very quickly learn to the limit of its capabilities, whereas the 400 has the same features but allows for more growth.

It's great and better than the DDJ-200 because the DDJ-400 has its own onboard sound card :) I would also think about getting the DDJ-FLX4 instead of the DDJ-400 if possible - it's newer and is in Pioneer DJ's current line-up of beginner-focused controllers.

Both are good, it's the software compatibility that's different :) the DDJ-200 works with Rekordbox, and the Hercules 300 MK2 works with Serato. Decide which software you want to use, and then pick the controller that goes with it!

You mean the Vestax Spin 2? :) Yes it does work, not sure if it's still updated for later versions of Virtual DJ though (the update was back in 2014 iirc)

If you can get it cheap and if your OS supports it, then yes :) it's a nice controller with displays (though they are somewhat limited)
