The reason why the DCAU version of Clayface was called Matt Hagen is pretty simple: a hybrid of the three main incarnations of the Batman Villain which preceded him. - He resembles Basil Karlo (the Golden Age Clayface) in that he was an actor; even being nicknamed "The Man of a Thousand Faces" which was a moniker used for the real-life actor Lon Chaney who was an inspiration behind the creation of Karlo's character. Since BtaS, Basil Karlo's characterization in the comics has also been often lifted from the DCAU Hagen. - Obviously Matt shares his name with Matt Hagen, the Silver Age Clayface but in-addition to this, the shapeshifting clay behemoth version of Clayface originates from Hagen's incarnation of the character. - The DCAU Clayface resembles the Bronze Age Clayface, Preston Payne in the more tragic portrayal of his character. Also, Hagen's characterization resembles that of Payne as he appeared in Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on a Serious Earth in having Hagen's condition objectively analogous for the consequence of the male AIDS pandemic (albeit in the DCAU it is handled sympathetically whereas in Grant Morrison's novel it was vilified).

I feel like the modern incarnation of Basil Karlo was essentially created to piggyback off of the popularity of BTAS's composite version of Matt Hagan, sort of like how Mr. Freeze was updated to match the BTAS iteration of the character. But that could just be me. BTAS's version is still probably my favorite, but Clayface III is definitely interesting.

There's a reason a lot of early DC character have to be split between their "Earth 1" and "Earth 2" versions if they survived under the same name from the golden to the silver age, especially in the Batman stable. So many villains and other characters just became something totally new when the switch occurred, which isn't really something that happened at Marvel.

My favorite Clayface has to be Ethan Bennet from The Batman (2004 cartoon). Why? Because his story is tragically connected to Bruce Wayne. Bennett is a police detective who has been friends with Bruce since high school. Until one day (the end of season one (1)) The Joker (who else?) decided to use him as bait for Batman using a new "product" of his known as "Joker Putty" The fumes of the putty not only start messing with his head but gives him the shapeshifting powers Clayface is known for. If TL;DR: Clayface but with a similar but different backstory to Harvey Dent/Two-Face, including being old friends with Bruce Wayne.

I think an awesome way to make a Clayface-centric Batman movie would be to have him start out as the classic Basil Karlo slasher version, give him a brief taste of his powers near the beginning of the film - I would go the 'cave protoplasm' route; have it be a sample displayed somewhere that he gets accidentally exposed to - and slowly become obsessed with getting them permanently. I would keep the original motivation of having his old role being overshadowed, but the thing is, he's an older guy now; his youth is past him, and he soon realizes that he's in over his head. He used to specialize in these physical, acrobatic roles, and in his pride, assumed that he'd be able to do all that again to get revenge as Clayface - but he can't. Batman nearly wipes the floor with him until he encounters the protoplasm, and that's not enough to do more than allow him to get away. He must find more of that stuff! He must regain his edge! So he goes on a spree stealing more of it (I figure that anything that bizarre would be widely studied, so there's lots of bits and pieces of it in labs and such), until finally, he has enough to do what he wants. Summoning Batman to the old movie studio where he used to work, he douses himself in the stuff, and THAT'S when he becomes full-on monster Clayface. And at first, he's in control - he loses, of course, because he's the villain, but he's all smug about it - like, 'who cares; I'm back on top of my game now'. Then, in a final post-credits stinger, we see him try to become his old self - or anything remotely normal - for more than a few seconds, and he fails. Again and again. Nothing lasts more than a few seconds. A look of horror passes across his shifting features; he screams a gurgling scream, and - end movie.

I always liked the original Mudpack, all of them. Somehow modern Basil Karlo being the only Clayface and basically just having the Matt Hagen powers for different reasons seems flat to me, as is Matt Hagen being an actor, knowing how the concept originally developed and all the various Clayfaces there were before. Karlo, Hagen, Payne, and then Lady Clay are each like a little microcosm of the golden, silver, bronze, and, I guess, post-bronze ages of comics, and I like the idea of all of them wrapping up their own arcs. Matt Hagen as a kind of ghost of the silver age who lives on only through the continuation of his weird sci-fi ability I think is perfect, as is Clayfaces III and IV going off into the sunset together, and Karlo taking their abilities for himself to become some terrifying eldritch monstrosity just seems very full and right.

Really good list. For the most part we seem to agree. All of your choices are on my list, although some are in different spots. My list: 5. Sondra Fuller 4. Matt Hegan 3. The original Basil Karlo 2. Preston Payne 1. The modern Basil Karlo To be honest, these really the only good Clayfaces, in my opinion. The rest are just okay. Cassius Payne, aka Clayface V, the son of Preston and Sondra, had potential but was never used well. Claything, aka Clayface VI, was kind of unnecessary. Not terrible, but nothing was lost or gained by his existence. Todd Russell, aka Clayface VII, had a little potential, but nothing ever really became of him. Johnny Williams, aka Clayface VIII, had a decent origin and tragic backstory, but once again nothing ever became of him. These other Clayfaces basically ended up as unfinished projects, and I don’t know if they need finishing. Basil is really the only Clayface we need. Sondra and Preston have made appearances post-Rebirth, which I’m fine with. Even though it would be a shame to ditch Matt Hegan and the rest, they aren’t really necessary. Basil, Preston, and Sondra are the ones I feel should be continually used. Maybe Matt, but I think the rest don’t need to make comebacks. We’ve had more than enough Clayface sequels, let the original few continue to shine.
