I have a 1999 Boxster 986 and have done the following performance mods (after L&N IMS was done) 1. K&N high performance air filter 2. FVD performance software 3. Fabspeed sport headers 4. Fabspeed MaxFlo Exhaust 5. 74mm 996 throttle body 6. IPD Plenum (have to use 996 larger throttle body to fit) 6. TRS underdrive pulley 7. 997 ignition coils car runs, drives, and sounds awesome Although my advice would be to start with a Boxster S, that way you start with a little more HP then the base Boxster

what´s this black magic you call performance software? Is your engine turbo or atmosferic?
@20DYNAMITE063 жыл бұрын
Without the ECU remap, the first three mods (Airbox/Underpully/Throttle Body and Plenum) won't come close to providing the gains suggested here, sadly. You need to reprogram the ECU so it can make the most from those first three changes and new found flow, otherwise the engine is just going to pull what it was programmed to do from the factory and you won't see any gains.
@djfreshasfck82268 ай бұрын
dont think you can reprogram atmosferic engine cars. or it makes things break if you do, you have to upgrade stuff to make things easyer/smoother so your limited hp is better used.

I'm pretty happy with the assumed stock power level of my 01 Boxster s, and to be honest, I'm not really motivated to go to all this trouble for an extra 25 horsepower. However, if you want to show me how to get an extra 75 to 100 hr, then you've got my attention!

Hi! You listed throttle body and plenum to only cost 160£. Where do you find them that cheap because everywhere where I have looked they have costed something like 1000£? Can you link me those. Thank you
@thefreedomguyuk2 жыл бұрын
Not worth trying to add power to an old boxy. If you want to go faster in the old barge, it's much better value to give it a decent suspension. Combine that with a set of lower than standard profile tyres, and you get a much better handling. You can brake later and harder into corners, which will give you a higher average speed. A 986 on stock suspension can't really convert added power into higher speed. Well, it can....if you only ever drive in a straight line. Also, remember most of the mods you are suggesting in fact will reduce engine power, unless you send your car in for a Dyno run with a remapping. And I'll say most owners of old 986 really won't want to risk engine damage during a full power Dyno run. Any component failure on the dyno will cost more to repair than the car is worth.
@rgthomson1005 жыл бұрын
Just buy a 987 save the bother, also letting in more air has its problems to as the maf will simply shut the air down when the ecu gets the message there is to much air, the ecu needs told this is happening or it may even slow the car down

Not sure where you found a ECU tune for that low but in the states its about 1k$

Would you recommend the Boxster as a first car?
@RoadandRacetv8 жыл бұрын
+Unethical Rager A first car? Such as when you've just passed your driving test? If so it's a bit powerful for a novice driver. Also it's rear wheel drive which can catch some new drivers out.
@lifehackertips4 жыл бұрын
No, but only because of the cost of maintenance, since Porsches require frequent maintenance and it is very expensive compared to other manufactures. A toyota camry or corolla would be a better first car, and when that is paid of, then get a Boxster as a second car, keeping the camry or corolla as a backup for when the Boxster requires maintanence. When I last brought my Porsche to Porsche, they said it would be $15,000 for all scheduled maintenance to be done. $15,000 is more than an entire lifetime of maintenance for a corolla or camry.

I found your channel today and I saw the video where you talked about this topic. I'm glad I didn't type a long comment, lol. Anyway, I think the smartest thing to do would be to buy used parts from "bigger brothers". Of course, only the ones that fit. I think that would be much better than buying no name tunig parts. Probably even cheaper. ECU remaping is the last step since it wouldn't make any sense otherwise. Am I right?

@RoadandRacetv6 жыл бұрын
It's just a conservative estimate. There's not much you can do with a naurally aspirated engine. Wasn't able to test it in real life though. Have you seen my series on modifying the boxster for more power?
@lifehackertips4 жыл бұрын
it's probably correct, a NA engine can only do so much. Perhaps with all the other mods done first the remap might be more benefiical, but on a stock engine the remap would only be a few BHP

Yes these mods can increase power and it's not rocket science. the lighter the rotating assembly (pistons,crank,con rods,flywheel, valves) the more power you can make without adding forced induction to the mix. also,the better the air flow in(Oxygen) and out (CO2) of the engine,the more power you'll be able to obtain. Sorry if I came off rude before but I'm just simply stating the facts. what if someone who knows nothing about cars watched this video and repeated what you said to someone else who is more familiar with the physics behind engines,the person who repeated what you said would become embarrassed and he/she would probably be laughing stock
@sje1066 жыл бұрын
Lighter internals do not increase power. They are just lighter and the engine will be able to accelerate faster. No more power being created by the engine.
@riqueplays38286 жыл бұрын
+sje106 they do increase both power and throttle response. Ever heard of parasitic loss and rotational inertia The rotational inertia of the rotating assembly reduces power and fuel economy since it requires more force to move heavier objects than lighter objects. the same principle apply here. do your research and don't embarrass yourself.
@gurkankiziltan94296 жыл бұрын
Using a larger throtle body with the same engine (unless you force induction) will not increase engine performance.
@RoadandRacetv6 жыл бұрын
We tested this in real life and it did. Check out my three Boxster performance mods videos.
@riqueplays38287 жыл бұрын
The under drive pulley does not spin slower than the stock crank pulley,it actually spins faster. It is lighter and has a smaller radius than the stock and as a result, it will rotate faster because it has less rotational inertia than stock and the smaller radius allows it to spin faster hence less power is taken from the crankshaft to drive the pulley which results in the power increase. I agree that we all make mistakes but dude,get your facts right before you make videos and misinform people who aren't engineers and want to know the actual logics behind the power gain. If it spun slower,that means that there's more rotational stress on the crankshaft, restricting the crankshaft rotation and as a result there would be a reduction in power and you would have a very slow throttle response.
@sje1066 жыл бұрын
the outer edge of the pulley will travel slower than that of a larger pulley. It will not increase power.
@riqueplays38286 жыл бұрын
+sje106 Who are you? Did you study applied physics? Do you study automotive engineering? I guess not
@sje1066 жыл бұрын
Enrique McLeggon I am an engineer. Yes it will give a better throttle response, but no it will not increase the power. The bhp figure on a dyno will not increase. Performed this test on my own built car. You’ve already embarrassed yourself, I don’t need to do it for you. Have a nice day.
@stevenp31766 жыл бұрын
Because of the ratio change it spins the accessories slower. Hence the name underdrive not under drive. Get in a 10 speed bicycle put the chain on the smallest crank pulley then tell me if you go faster or slower. Look at supercharger kits. They increase the boost by either a smaller blower pulley or larger crank pulley or both. The inner diameter speed is the same between the two. The outer diameter speed decreases with a crank pulley. Because the outside travels less distance in one rotation the belt speed decreases. In a perfect world you won’t get belt slip on either the crank pulley or the accessory pulley. Since that belt speed is a 1 to 1 if the crank pulley outer diameter travels 6 inches the belt will too. If the accessory pulley is smaller then it will spin a higher RPM with that 6 inches of movement. The crank pulley will not change rpm but will cause the belt to travel less and slow everything down on the accessories to slow down. This is where in theory you should free up horse power. As objects spin faster their inertia increases it does not decrease. You might want to get your facts straight before you chastise someone else on a subject you clearly have no understanding of. If you went to school like 400 you implied then you need to go back for a refund as they clearly chose not to or were unable to teach you.
