I've always wanted to do calligraphy. So I've decided to just start today and not just think about about doing it. Thank you for the info.

Another good book is The Art of Cursive Penmanship by Michael R. Sull - it may not be readily available due to smaller print runs, but it's a solid calligraphy book.

Great information. I have been lettering Copperplate Script professionally for ages. We are rare. Hope to attend an IAMPETH conference at some point. My favorite books are of course any of the Speedball Text Books. I like “The Anatomy of Letters” by Charles Pearce and David Harris’ Encyclopedia detailing the overlap of strokes with transparent ink. Very helpful. My favorite for Modern Calligraphy is Lisa Englebrecht’s “Modern Calligraphy & Hand Lettering”. Everyone should invest in “Scribe” by John Stevens. It’s the ultimate discussion of the spiritual side if you will about the how and why of fine hand lettering. His portfolio is mind blowing. He commands all tools and styles with expertise while making it appear spontaneous and joyful. Copperplate is having a moment along side the bouncy scripts. Suzanne Cunningham and Rachel Yallop are my favorites. Carl Rohrs rules brush scripts. I am entering the digital realm of calligraphy and found your channel and tips for Procreate. Next is a web site, will check out Square Space. Thanks for posting.

Great resources. Was hovering between learning Spencer or Palmer handwriting but now I am inspired to go the whole hog and just leanrn Copperplate script! Throught this journey, I've come to realise that cursive handwriting is much bigger (and common) in America (and South Asian countries). What happened to us, why are we so poxy with this beaituful skill

Thank you for your recommendations...I plan on purchasing Mastering Copperplate by Eleanor Winters. I've seen many calligraphers suggesting that book. And I just downloaded the book of Dr. Joseph...really appreciate it.

Hello Ian Barnard - I saw your youtube video first and thought it was interesting to start here. I wrote down the five books you suggest and the pens/ink. - I will start with Calligraphy for Dummies, and Calligraphy Bible first. I think this is a good place as any. Plus it open my mind up to understand it besides its just "LETTERS" but a lot more. I well come any suggestions you might have. I've had an interest in this for MANY MANY YEARS... Thank you very much for your top list, it is interesting to see how differently it is approached in every book. I was searching for Calligraphy practise app (because I want to improve my handwriting when I do my labels and things) and I only saw calligraphy aimed for kids, not for adults, with elephants and lions ... then I searched "Lettering" and the results I found were more similar to what I was looking for... but lettering is not the same as calligraphy, so I don't understand why calligraphy is called lettering when targeted to adults... a bit confusing.
@IanBarnard5 жыл бұрын
I think both terms seem to be used because they do overlap. But I narrow it down to: Calligraphy is writing type and Lettering is drawing type. Can get confusing when people don't use it in the correct context.

@@IanBarnard Yes, that is what I was explained in a workshop I went to, lettering is drawing letters... I like both but first I would love to be able to do proper handwriting.. thank you very much for your answer.

A Crayola marker, the basic markers kids in the US use for crafts and coloring. Very cheap, it was cool to see it used like this and inspiring to grab whatever is around.
