I sort of agree with Promise of Blood. In general, the Powdermage Trilogy oozes style and action-packed battles, skirmishes, and intrigue. However, it would've been better if they could've slowed down the pacing. The next two novels explore the justification for making a coup in the first place, but at that point it feels like it probably would've been better to restructure the entire trilogy or making a prequel novella or something.

Don't feel bad. I read Return of the Crimson Guard back during my initial Malazan read. It put me off ICE so hard I haven't even touched him since, no matter how much praise other Malazan readers give him. I believe my initial response to when people said Orb Scepter Throne was good was, "No other author would've been given that much time to get good." And it was always hard for me to reconcile ICE's take on Malazan characters with Stephen Erickson's. I wish they would've segregated them so I didn't get a version of each. But I am going to read Path to Ascendency this year. I've heard too much good about it to not try again.

Maybe because I don't know of many fantasy stories set in the flintlock era (although you have mentioned Django's work and I'm looking to dig into that. As someone who just finished reading Dancers Lament last night, I'm not sure ICE really improves as a writer. I enjoyed it because it was more Malazan and you get history, but he spent so much time cramming in cameos that didn't contribute to the story and all the action felt forced to fit the narrative, nothing felt organic. Definitelty not a deep character study. I loved Powder Mage, but I wasn't looking for a book about a revolution, that is only the setup for the story. I mildly cared about the MC, but since it is told in first person, we know he is safe. If I don't care about characters, I really don't give a damn about the war or what is going on. The other big drawback is the exposition. My GOD! It was long (maybe 50% of the book), boring, and not even beautifully written so you can at least appreciate the prose. I also wasn't that convinced that these people are 75+ years. The start of the book wasn't so bad. I would argue that the main source of any disappointment is the subversion of an expectation. I have the same feeling, the super overhype with some authors too. I read the books and go.....is that it? Really? It was....ok. But not ground breaking or clever or unique or really special. Meh.

AAAAA MURDERBOT i have ONLY seen people give that book 5* so i went into expecting the BEST THING EVER. i really related to murderbot itself because i'm the most introverted introvert to have ever introverted LOL, but the rest of the story was just... OK. the story was just okay, and the other characters were just okay. xD i gave it 3* ultimately, but i'm hoping it gets better as the series continues, especially the full-length novel "A MILLION" "SIX MILES" wow you hated that book so much you ripped off the cover... xDDD

Man I'm happy to hear someone say this about All Systems Red. While it was fine, FINE, I just couldn't care about any of it. After seeing all the hype about it, I thought it was going to blow my mind. I don't know if that's just a function of it being a novella (but I've read novellas where I get attached to characters and actually see some development) or what, but I just thought it was so bland and didn't tell any particularly interesting story. I read it in one sitting and when I was done, just thought, "okay, that happened" and literally nothing else. No feeling at all. I also agree about Burning God. I was so amped by the end of Dragon Republic and then...well, I don't want to get into spoilers, but there were things that I thought should have been the climax that happened halfway through the book, and it felt like Kuang was trying to do too much in one book and couldn't decide who the final conflict was going to be between. I honestly felt like it could have been longer or broken into two books that could have been better. Based on Kuang's public question "What if Mao was a teenage girl?" when she talked about how she developed Rin, I thought the ending was going to be different (and better) than it was.

I totally agree with you on Murderbot, I also think that RotCG is the worst Malazan book out there, although I didn't find it as bad as you, but yeah, I took ages to get through as well... Finally, my by far most disappointing book, probably one of the worst books I ever read, was Bird Box

Totally feel you on Murderbot - and saying that as someone who loved it. But like - it's a 3 star book. That I totally enjoyed, yes, but it's not deep? It's fine! And I can confirm that the second book has a liiiiiittle bit more plot, but is still fundamentally the same thing. I want to go through and read the rest, i'll probably enjoy them quite a bit, but it's just a small little side thing, it's not worth making a big thing over. I also probably enjoy Esslemont more than you are, but... *the* - THE funniest, and by that I mean worst - is that the Crimson Guard are all the absolute worst most boring characters throughout all the entire series apparently about them. He definitely becomes a better writer - Assail is great, Orb Sceptre Throne is excellent! But the Crimson Guard just is kinda there the whole time. Lot of the side characters are great - You just can't hope for a Malazan army type thing. :/

Gotcha! That's good to know, if disappointing about the CG! I'm excited to continue his series though later this year!

I also think Murderbot was overhyped. I liked All Systems Red and thought it was funny, but nothing amazing.

You already saw my disappointing reads 😆 As someone starting Malazan do I need to worry about these side novels??
@TheLibraryofAllenxandria4 жыл бұрын
No not really. Most people read them after the main series. I just made the decision to try and read them concurrently, which normally isn't advised.

I agree about Murderbot. I read it and didn't get the hype. I also didn't get the hype about Mistborn, though. Amazing magic system - ok. But, I didn't care about any of those characters and I wasn't invested. I'm trying The Way of Kings. We'll see. Joe Abercrombie is good. I got through chapter 1. Ok. Chapter 2. Hmmm, I'm not sure. The rest - more, please. I am a person that dragged themself through the first 100 pages of The Dragonbone Chair, though, because someone said I would really like it and I had to justify giving up on it. After the first 100 pages I didn't sleep for a week after devouring that book and rushing off to Hastings to buy the rest of the series. I reread it about once a year now even though I don't like some of the characters parts. I started Powder Mage and said nope. I haven't read Eric Flint yet. I think you might like his stuff.

@@TheLibraryofAllenxandria Cliff notes: he's the main guy in the original Star Wars timeline involved in securing the Death Star plans...and he also defeated a powerful Inquisitor amped-up by the Valley of the Jedi (a potent Force nexus), took down a rogue Jedi's attempt to establish a new Empire, trained the guy who bested an ancient Sith Lord... He's jokingly referred to as the Star Wars Chuck Norris, in some corners of the internet, if that clears things up. And his books/games are a fun read/play!

Ugh Murderbot. I read the first 4. I dont get the hype at all. they dont get better. The first is the high point. 4 books of her(its a girl not boy) just wanting to get back to her shows. Man it was Novellas and I was still bored. I kept wondering if maybe others had read different versions of these they are just soooo bland. I mean if I want a butchy introvert who want to be left alone with their entertainment Id talk to myself. Promise Of Blood I had to DNF... I just couldnt.
