my most hated items are 1. torque to yield fasteners. for one time use bolts. 2. lubed for life transmissions and diffs. 3. car stereo "InfoTainment Systems" that integrate everything in to the radio. even the climate controls. looking at you Chrysler. so you can replace them with better aftermarket stuff. 4. no spare tires. 5. wiring harnesses that have plastic clips to hold the light bulbs in the socket. in the desert heat of las vegas and phenoix they get brittle and break off and the light bulb falls out. Looking at you Toyota.

On #5, I live in El Paso, went to change the bulbs in my wife's 2010 Escape, I noticed the same thing, plastic crap that the bulbs simply fell out of. I looked online to find a replacement, found an LED unit that was a plug and play replacement, looked like the OEM unit, and was the same price as the original, where I'd still have to put bulbs in and it would brake again anyway. Plus, frankly, her high mount light is bright as hell now.

They probably dont have drain plugs because people put alot of snake oil crap in transmission or change it wrong/put non OEM fluid in transmission. I think that's definitely the reason why torque converters stopped coming with drain plugs, people were draining them and messing them up. Dealer unfortunately is best place to get transmission fluid changed.
@x-man5056
@x-man5056 5 жыл бұрын
@@jdigitalseven7 No. It is just cheaper to make the pan w/o a drain plug and one less place to leak. You have to pull the pan to change the filter anyway so..... Expect to pay at least double for the job at a dealer. Early automatics did come with drains in the pan and torque converters but advances in transmission fluid made the necessity of regular trans fluid changes much less frequent.

A lot of transmission pans haven’t had drain plugs for a long time. In the 60s we would buy B&M drain plug kits and drill holes in the pan to install a removable plugs.. Also quality synthetic oils and fluids have stretched drain intervals greatly. I have used Amsoil 5w30 in my 06 Dodge truck since it was new. Used 15000 mile drain intervals and it now has 320,000 miles with no issues. I do agree with a lot of what you say. I believe the real reason for most of this is making it almost impossible for DYI guys to work on there own stuff.

Agree with all five. Another couple of pet peeves I have with the new vehicles is all these 18 inch plus wheels with the low profile elastic band 1.5 inch tire sidewalls. WTF? Does everyone have brand new pristine roads and racetracks to drive on? Run over a dime and the wheels are tweeked. Especially the SUV's and pickups, whos going off roading with these? I guess skidpad numbers are the flavor of the day for soccer mom chit chat in the bleachers now. I want a car with 4 normal size wheels, 2 doors, a manual transmission, Speedo, tach, oil pressure, volts, temp and fuel gauges. thats it. Oh one more: These "blindspot" monitoring mirrors full of sensors and extra electronics. What used to be a $50-$200 repair is now ten times that if one gets knocked off. If your mirrors are adjusted properly there are no blind spots. 99% of drivers have them adjusted so that their own doors and rear quarters are visible in them. None of your own vehicle should be visible to you in your sideview mirrors.

On that car, there is only is an electronic sensor oil level sensor, we replaced it once and it worked fine for some time. So we did the work on the head and pistons and changed chain etc. we fired it up it ran okay in high ranges but didn't idle right. The oil sensor said that there was enough oil, so we didn't think about that. We thought it was something wrong with the vanos, so we checked to solenoids. nothing. We were about to order a new vanos wheel. Before we did, I decided to add oil to the engine. the error codes were gone and the engine ran fine, then I also checked the oil level after that, it had somehow decreased. To touch on the concept of 1 quart of engine oil per thousand miles. My friend bought a 2016 jeep Cherokee brand new. Not sure what engine it has. She calls me early Saturday morning saying as she drove through an intersection it turned off out of nowhere. I was stumped so she gets it towed. Tech tells her it's bone dry on engine oil and it was at 5500 miles since last change she went over by 500. It turns out it's acceptable to burn 1 quart every 1000 miles and when the car runs low on oil it doesn't flash a low oil light or a chime or anything no. It turns itself right the hell off regardless of what you're doing. Sitting at a stoplight or driving down the highway boom shuts off bye bye power steering and power brakes. At 1 quart every 1000 miles the car cam barely make it to its change intervals before it runs completely dry. That's bs.

There was a time when my tool kit with a socket set, a few wrenches and a few hammers were adequate for most repairs. Now everything is electronic modules, computers, solenoids and emission systems so wiring diagrams and a fancy and expensive code reader is required to diagnose and reset the computers even for simple jobs like replacing brake pads. Emissions controls, heat and turbos are problematic in my experience. As for beef number 5, there is a mechanical lockout to take the electronically controlled transmissions out of park when the battery is dead if you know where to look. I keep hearing people say they are using regular starters for Start stop. I have never seen this can someone point me to a source? I honestly think E torque has simplified things. There is no longer a starter and alternator. They are one replacable unit that is above the engine so they are less likely to get damaged or dirty/worn. I agree. All vehicles should be equipped with an oil dipstick. If you have lockers or pressure that’s usually one of the first things that the technician checks as oil level. Hard to do that if you have to drain it. Especially since you’re never going to drain all of the oil out of the engine to begin with and they’re still going to be about 10% left in the car. Which isn’t much but still kind of a pain in the butt to go through that process to help you go to the next step of your diagnostics

I am with you on all of this. Especially the transmission rant. Now I would point out a car I just got rid of. I had an 07 Camry XLE. It had just hit 180k. I got all the service records with it and it was untouched. I drove it to Vegas without an issue and gave it to my brother because he needed a car. The trans is still fine. So if its made right it can last. But Ford doesn't make a trans right. Especially look at their PTU's on the AWD systems. Also screw anyone who thinks you don't need an oil dipstick. But I guess germans are too good to get under the hood of their own cars these days. In fact it seems all new car owners for the most part are no matter what brand they drive. This is why after giving away my Camry I bought a 1990 Bronco with a straight 6 engine and a stick shift. Bought it in Idaho and drove it to WI for less than the down payment on a new truck would be.

Here are mine as a 30 year veteran of working in the field day in and day out. 1. GM running brake lights through the BCM therefore making brake lights inoperative when the key is in the off position. 2. GM products turning on the reverse lights when using the remote lock/Unlock feature. At night in a crowded parking lot it leads drivers to think a car is backing up. 3. Lack of anti-seize compound on various suspension bolts prone to rust that attach wearable/consumable parts to the vehicle. 4. Eliminating the spare tire for weight/space savings. An emergency donut tire to get you off a freeway is better than no tire at all. 5. Placing fuse and relay boxes in remote inaccessible locations and not providing a good list of what each fuse/relay is and all the items on that circuit.

With transmissions, I respectfully disagree. I really enjoyed working on standard transmissions and Limitorque valve operators. They were fun and easy to remove, overhaul, and install. Automatic automobile transmissions became easy when they when to electronic control in the mid 90's. The Master Kit was always easy and with the electronic control there was really nothing to do to the valve pack anymore. Now, today, let us say there are only automatic transmissions for this conversation. Lifetime fill. Lifetime fill means that transmissions are not touched until failure, If a failure occurs in the 150,000 - 200,000 miles of ownership then $4000 - $5000 should get you a factory replacement, read factory rebuild, put into your car. Transmissions are no longer a DIY project, why? because of the warranty. The last thing a DIY mechanic wants to do is remove the transmission again to make a warranty claim. In conclusion, for a DIY, or average Joe car owner, they should never have to deal with a transmission issue or replacement. Automatic Transmissions are hydraulic devices and the fluid does not wear out like motor oil does in a combustion engine. There is no reason to change the Automatic Transmission fluid in a modern car today.

I've been a mechanic since '89 and there are 2 schools of thought on no auto trans drainplug: 1) It's to make sure you pull and clean the pan and replace the filter. 2) It's so DIYers don't drain the wrong pan. I have seen this; customer drained the trans thinking it was the oil pan and then dumped 5 quarts of oil in the engine. Empty trans, overfull crankcase- not good. Yes, I completely agree about the auto start/stop and the electric shifter. When my parents bought their first car with power windows and locks my dad said "it's just more things to break"- I quote it all the time. Manufactures have been saying for decades a quart of oil per 1000 miles is normal. And yes the higher oil change intervals issue was first raised when synthetic oil became a thing. If you're under the hood less often you're less likely to catch a problem early: belts, hoses, etc.

Most car manufacturers make very little (if any) profit on the sale of the car, they make it up on the service shop. Yeah, you cannot see and fix small/simple problems by doing regular service intervals, but that is exactly the point.

Many automatic transmissions no longer use a mechanical valve body. So mechanical shifter would be just a mechanical element that goes to another electric switch. I still don't like some of the drivability issues involving that, if you had a problem in a vehicle that had a limp mode you could put the car in neutral while you're driving down the freeway shut it off turn it back on and put it back in gear and we go up and we're properly again. Sometimes errant flaws occur. The problem with the electronic shifters is if you put it in neutral and shut the car off the car won't go into gear at all until you come to a complete stop. At least with some models. Start-stop, is a solution to a non-existent problem. If you're talkin about EPA regulations specifically. By 1978, the tree in your front yard put out more hydrocarbons than your automobile did. I'm not quite sure what the purpose is making the much cleaner than the trees are. I do enjoy the added drivability and longer service life, not to mention the better performance. But stopped start, it's just asking for traffic jams because it doesn't take long before many of them just don't start. And you're usually in the middle of traffic at the time I would like to point out to you that the National Standard for oil usage in an automobile engine is 1 quart in 700 miles. I find that extreme, but that is the standard. Don't ask me to quote exactly where that comes from but it has been known to be that for a couple of decades now. A lot of new Motors use a bit more oil than I think they should, never seem to have that problem up until about the mid-1990s.

The oil burning issue with new cars is often the oil suggested for the engine. In order to get higher gas mileage some manufacturers are using extremely light synthetic oils which can be so thin they slip right on by piston rings. I believe Subaru had this issue and eventually upped the oil viscosity recommendation.

A comment on auto start/stop: Most vehicles that have this use an upgraded starter to handle the duty cycle. And some of the newer tech uses a dedicated start/charge system similar to that of a true hybrid. I don't think it's a fair comparison to suggest a "normal" starter would be worn out sooner as those vehicles don't use one. That being said, my peeve with auto start/stop comes more from the oiling system, where there's no accumulator or other means of insuring oil pressure to items like lifters and timing chain tensioners. The time to vehicle start is less than the time it takes to move your foot from brake to gas so I think that addresses the concern about needing to get out of the way. As to transmissions: I think we as car guys should know better than to trust a sealed trans. It's low level market manipulation by the manufacturer, to reduce advertised maintenance costs. The fluid will last fine for 100k. The trans will be fine for 100k. But that's the extent of the intended lifespan for the vehicle. It's marketed to the first owner. If you plan to keep the vehicle longer than that, you need to think with your head a bit. I could argue it's also an act to protect consumers from shops(Looking at you Jiffy Lube) inappropriately upselling maintenance items. I don't agree or subscribe to lifetime fluids, but I think it's important to understand the context

Thank you for your well thought out response, I appreciate it! I will say though I think there is an interesting dichotomy between your two paragraphs because I completely agree with your second one, but not quite as much with the first. The hybrid vehicles like I mentioned are a different story, and while yes it usually doesn't take as long to start as a normal morning startup in the start/stop systems there still is a much more noticable lag than an engine that is already running. They may use stronger starters, but I still have had to replace many of them and in my hands they don't seem to be too different to the standard ones that have been around a long time. I think a similar philosophy that you referenced in your second paragraph is at play on both of those subjects.

@@GearHeadsGarageChannelThanks for the reply! Might I inquire into the general model year ranges and/or brands you've experienced starter failure on that can be attributed to start/stop features? I think the Chrylser 3.6 pentastar makes a rather interesting case study on start/stop tech as opposed to conventional, as while the engine itself is largely unchanged save for a couple minor tweaks and optimizations, the models that include start/stop tech have a substantially larger starter. If other vehicles use the same part, I reckon that could account for their failures. That being said, I'd be quite curious to have access to some data in regard to replacement intervals to better determine if the failure rate of ASS equipped vehicles are higher than their more traditional counterparts. We see early failures on all vehicles. The question I'd like to answer is if it's statistically significant. I should also add that I speak from a fairly narrow scope as far as my opinions on it go.They're the only vehicles I have first hand experience with in regards to start/stop tech. While I subjectively don't like it primarily on account of the feel/feedback, their system seems to work quite well and has no issues going from engine off/stopped to full throttle get-going in the time it takes me to direct my foot to switch pedals.

@@Snow.Drifter The ones I have seen issues with most commonly are Ford, Mopar, and BMW. I know the systems are being improved and some manufacturers have sturdier designs but they also are MUCH more expensive! Sorry busy this morning don't have time for a long reply but I appreciate your feedback and the conversation you put much more thought into your comments than 99% of youtube! =P

My beef with start stop is it should be up the customer to use it or not every time I override it it resets to stop start default when I shut off the car. Why not just reduce the engine idle speed 100 RPM to save gas.

@ rob C Start stop has to be the default setting. That’s the way the EPA test is, the EPA will not allow a button to be pushed to enable start stop. But they will allow it to be disabled every time you start the car.

My dad had a 76 Ford truck with a 390. Shifter went out in it and I remember for years he would pop the hood and manually changes gears from park to drive or reverse. I would have to hold the brake while he did it.

Also the pedestrian detection systems that can override your brake and throttle input. A guy walks in front of your car with a gun or baseball bat to carjack or rob you and you have your 3 kids in the car, floor it at the guy and the car won't go forward, but it will jerk forward a foot or two and bog down. Also like myself, I drive 1 mile to work and shut the car off. In the winter time when I work like 12 nights in a row, I'll have to put my car battery on a charger all day because it won't start. In the winter time, it takes 10-15 minutes of driving to replenish the battery of the juice it took to start it, so this auto start and stop system would mean I'd have to charge my battery every 3 or 4 shifts bc I have 3 or 4 stop signs. Great video.

I had to push the Jeep dealer to do a transmission filter and fluid change on my grand cherokee. I was having a clunking noise between 3rd and 2nd gear when it downshifted in stop and go traffic. So of course the dealership did an expensive diagnostic on the transmission and declared nothing was wrong and I didn't need the fluid change. I insisted they do it anyway. Then I get the call that the technician said I my transmission pan was corroded so badly that I'd need a new pan and if I refused to put on a new pan they wouldn't do the job. I told then do the pan but I want to see the old one. When I picked up the Jeep the service writer was curt with me. I asked to see the old part and she trembled. The service writer next to her said he'd go look for it but the shop was cleaned and it was likely in the dumpster. I asked how come a transmission pan can get so corroded in 4 years and 70,000 miles and why the mechanic would refuse to remove it and would leave in place to fail instead? The answer is a real pisser. The 2nd service writer said they corrode on the inside because the fluid absorbs moisture from the air. Then, being a logical person with a garage background in my youth, I asked how the mechanic saw the corrosion on the inside of the pan if he didn't remove it. It got very awkward at that point. As I suspected the transmission pan couldn't be located and the dealership lost not only a customer at the service department but a recurring Jeep buying customer, my daughter's Jeep business, and her husband's Ram business. Oh, and by the way, the change in filter and fluid fixed the transmission issue.

100% agreement here, I change engine oil and filters every 5000km oil and filters are cheap as to the transmission we check the oil at 10000km and change and filter at 20000km same reason oil and filters are cheap, if you have no drain bung then at the next service put one in you have the pan off one hrs labour and a few dollars of material and problem solved I also like magnets on drain plugs,it used to be common not any more. its called planned failure they are not meant to last 6 months after the warranty expires

I work for a used car dealer and they buy alot of caravan , town & country , VW routan . The way remove the trans pan to not make a mess is I remove all the bolts off one side then loosen the rest slightly pry it and finish removing them and while removing them more and more fluid comes out instead of all at once

Of course, I think all of us do it that way but if it had a drain it would be faster, cleaner and easier. My point is there should be one.

If they can save $1 for not including the drain plug, multiply that by the number of vehicles they make - say 500,000 (or more, over the years) well they save $500,000

A little off topic. I worked with a not so competent engineer many years ago. I asked him, " What railroad did you work for and how many trains did you wreck". Needless to say he wasn't too happy with me.
I never understood why you can't go faster than light - until now!
