Do you agree that breeding isn't for everyone? Why or why not?
@miketufaro59153 жыл бұрын
Yes but also breeding reptiles isn’t for everyone either
@RoseProseFroze3 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree I work in a vet office and lots of our clients are rescues. There are so many animals stuck in limbo because the owners didn't think everything through, or they were abusive, and sometimes they were good people but we live in a capitalist society and their circumstances changed. Or they died. My point is there are A LOT of animals that need homes and we need to work harder to give them homes especially if what you're looking for is one of the Big 4 (leopard gecko, corn snake, ball python, bearded dragon) or a Red-Eared Slider. I think becoming a breeder can be necessary if you want to reduce the pressure to get Wild Caught specimens but for the most part, and there are some uncommon or rarer species that you can get from existing breeders because they are not usually in rescues/shelters/craigslist but you don't need to breed and that's ok. Provide homes for the reptiles that are here.

Breeding definitely isn't for everyone. It requires extra levels of care for gravid/pregnant females, incubation, baby enclosures/tubs, and you need to be prepared and equipped to take care of those babies for months if they don't sell right away. There's a lot of time, money, and effort that goes into breeding. But, if you're one of the people who is up for it (clearly you are, which is awesome), then it's very rewarding.

I would say bearded dragons too. There's so many of them out there, and especially "regular" ones, much like regular ball pythons, you basically would need to give a way. Also, it would be great to see keepers shifting focus on breeding animals that are typically wild caught. My next project is going to involve monitors that are regularly imported, specifically looking at tree monitors or peach throat monitors.

Not gonna breed, still gonna watch. Wanna hear a short story how I got in to reptiles? When I was 5 years old my favourite play was to catch our local critters, I live in Finland so in this cold climate we only have very few reptiles/amfibians. My favourite ones where our local and only tiny lizards that I do not know the english name for. I also kidnapped toads and frogs. I was really good at catching these super fast tiny lizards in thick bush, it was risky as I most of the time just listened for their moves in the blueberry bushes that covered the whole forest floor as I accidentally got a venomous viper once in a while. I never got hurt that I still wonder, I did this from 5yo to 10 yo and never accidentally hurt myself or animals eventhough our little lizards were really prone to dropping their tails and vere really small and fragile. When I got my first legless lizard I was MESMERIZED. What an unbelievable creature that I had heard stories but never seen one. I was ten and I saved my pocket money to buy my own reptile. I got a leopard gekko and I was so happy! Year later I got two corn snakes and two more leopard geckos and been on the same route now at 27 yo. I actually got again a leopard gecko to my collection about a week ago and I feel like that child again kidnapping reptiles and frogs again. If you possibly read this I'd like to know if you have a video about how you got in to reptiles and if ypu don't could you do one?

My girls Laverne & Shirley are still too young to lay eggs, and I have a waiting list started for whenever they start, but it won't take long before I'll have too many. I agree that not everyone should breed their reptiles, glad you stressed that throughout. I bred my Leopard Geckos for the first time and I have to say it has been the most rewarding experience. The hardest part was successful incubation until I bought a proper incubator. The only problem was...............I fell in love with all the offspring so I could NOT sell them (even though COVID put a wrench in the works on that score). So also you need to be prepared to part with them. If you love your reptiles as much as I do you will find yourself with a bigger family of scaly friends to care for!.

Funny enough mourning geckos were the first species I started breeding. I've been told they are a "crap lizard" that people used to sell for like 5$ each as feeders, ironically they are still my most profitable seller. I wouldn't have brought up that they breed quickly and uncontrolably if it was my vid, simply because they aren't hard to sell with even minor connections. if anything I would have pointed out that the babies will escape anything with a hold larger than an 8th of an inch. Interesting vid though.

Even though my female almost big enough, I'm waiting until I have a bigger place because I'm well aware that I might need to hold on to babies for a while. Well, I lost all respect for a Brian a few years ago when he made a video of him crying down in the dungeon where he breeds all his ball pythons. He said he hated to even go down there because of how horrible his drawers were. Way too small, laying on a piece of paper, no enrichment.....He then told everyone what his plans were to make life better for them in the future and promised it would be done very very soon. Well 2 years later and things r just as horrible, and instead of him using his money to make their lives better, he opened the new side of the reptarium. I’m sorry....I just cannot support this.

I knew mourning geckos and ball pythons were going to be on the list. lol. The market is SO saturated for ball pythons though. It's insane. However, I haven't seen hardly any axanthics at my local shows, and they are my fave. Ever since I saw Billy's INSANE lightning pied clutch from a few yrs ago at MC I fell in love! Now I have a single gene vpi axanthic, and if I choose to breed her, I'm going for a visual lightning pied. But mainly I'm focusing on bullsnakes. Colubrids are flying off shelves like crazy, and no one else in my state breeds pituophis. So I might be able to fill a niche. I love bullsnakes, and would be cool to see others that might love bullsnakes too. We'll see. Still raising my group up. We'll see in another 2 yrs if they even WANT to breed. That's always a catch too. Just because you throw 2 snakes together doesn't mean they're going to make like jack rabbits and do the horizontal tango.

I don't breed for money, I just like chorus frogs. Me keeping/breeding what I do in my terrariums means that even if we have a fluke frost/heat wave that wipes out all the dormant frogs or not enough rain to achieve enough water for the tadpoles? Not the end of the world, because I'll have enough tadpoles to keep the cycle going.
