Christmas and Hakkukah are based on celebrations that existed thousands of years ago and a rooted in culture. Kwanaza was a "celebration" made up by a violent racist in America in the 1960s that has zero connection to actual African culture.

Why are some people angry about this? Why can't we have just honor our roots
@eruditootidure26118 жыл бұрын
People who get "angry" about Kwanzaa are mostly just racist. That being said, Kwanzaa isn't really celebrating African Americans' roots, given that much of the holiday is rooted in Eastern African and Zulu traditions, and the name is based on Swahili, while most African Americans are of WEST African descent. I personally find that somewhat distasteful, because it conflates several very different cultures, and claims them for people with no ties to eastern Africa. It's a bit like if Chinese Americans created a holiday "celebrating their roots", but based said holiday on a combination of Indian and Filipino culture, and gave it an Arabic name.

Erudito otidurE Just wondering, but is Kwanzaa well intended or just a cynical attempt to create a festival?

It's weird all the hate Kwanza gets in the comments, it's the only winter holiday that isn't religious and includes all races. Usually that's seen as a good thing. All it talks about is respect for your fellow man, yourself, and your family.
@jean-claudehattingh92298 жыл бұрын
法理威廉 but its okay to hate it if it was religious?
@williamf.66738 жыл бұрын
Jean-claude Hattingh Religious holidays tend to exclude non believers or have some root in insulting non believers; for example April Fools Day originates from a time when European Christians would insult pagan Europeans. Christmas was a pagan holiday when it began and involved getting drunk on wine,raping slave boys,wife beating etc. So usually yes, if it is religious, it is probably bad.
@jean-claudehattingh92298 жыл бұрын
法理威廉 yet all those that you mentioned are secular now and dont have any religious meaning behind them... so lets say the atheists took it away from christians and now its secular
@williamf.66738 жыл бұрын
Jean-claude Hattingh I'll admit Christmas has changed far from what it used to be (as well as April Fools), but with this growing "right-wing p.c. outrage", it is either used to fuel economies or become something for Fox News conservatives to complain about. Whether Starbucks' cups aren't "festive enough" or everyone says,"happy holidays" rather than "Merry Christmas" rubs some people the wrong way, which forces inclusion rather than allowing inclusion. So, Christmas isn't that secular yet.

Just a KZbinr Well have just have to disagree on your first statement. And yes I watched the video but what it didn’t touch on was the fact the founder was caught beating two women with an electrical cord and shoved hot curling irons down their throats. And the whole inclusivity point they made was bs because this founder was openly and notoriously racist.
@justayoutuber25735 жыл бұрын
Автомат Калашникова but all holidays ARE made up though; they don't just exist. In my opinion, Kwanzaa has a good message and is a great non religious holiday. It's creator may be a piece of shot but the holiday isn't about him, more about unity and family.
@gunsr4fun1175 жыл бұрын
Just a KZbinr For black people, and black people only. That’s what the original intent was, overtime it was not popular because of the racist basis it was founded on and only recently are they making it ‘inclusive’. Also how would you feel if Jeffery dahmer created a holiday or if a kkk member created a European harvest celebration, my bets are on you finding it disgusting and repulsive regardless of the message.

Regardless of what kind of gift of get your kid it doesn't matter, it's up to you. Also, to the people taking about the creator of Kwanzaa, you guys do remember what Christmas used to be right? Not condoning what he did but if you're gonna be pulling the "this bad person created this" or the "it used to be about this" card, know that most of the holidays we celebrate today were created by people that were either on some bullshit or wanted to celebrate some bullshit. It's this cute thing called progression.

You all got it wrong. It's a way of life here in Africa, not a "holiday" it's basically the first harvest of the harvest season and as true Africans- we plant seasonally - same way we determine the beginning and end of a "year" through "season". So the "first harvest", is usually what is harvested on the first 7 days... Therefore there's no 'date' to when it began. And IT IS PART OF THE ANCIENT AFRICAN TRADITIONS. Coz its our way of life We never knew Christmas until the white man came. Thats our thanksgiving, blackFriday, and Christmas- if I may say- Okay, what about the 7 principles? I can say its what is observed during this harvest time. For it to be a fruitful harvest, all these 7 principles will somehow manifest and be observed- an East African Girl🤗

Kwanzaa is an African-American celebration. It is not known in Kenya or Tanzania (the 2 main countries using Swahili, even though there are speakers in Uganda, Rwanda, Congo and Burundi to name a few) and I would go as far to say not in Africa. I could see why too. It is such a diverse continent, with over 100 languages and traditions/cultures. Kwanzaa only uses the Swahili language and Jewish symbolism. It was quite shocking to learn all the words from the name of the celebration to the principles are all in Swahili. Even the colors of the candles are of the Kenyan flag. Some meanings though should be corrected, kujichagulia is one word which means choose for yourself. Kuumba is to create not creativity. Also, please learn how to correctly say the names if you plan to adopt the celebrations. The pronunciations are quite off. That being said as an East African who has never set foot in America, I plan on adopting Kwanzaa. The principles are definitely in line with my culture. *Ps* It also is weird for me as a native speaker to say Habari gani, that's how we greet each other anyways when you meet someone, literally How are you. My ears and brain would interpret that as "Hi, how are you Kwanzaa" taking Kwanzaa to be someone's name. I wouldn't say how are you Christmas. On the top of my head Salama or Amani would be a much better fit. Imma look for one I will incorporate on my own though. Planon adding forgiveness as a principle too
