We thought that our a.c compressor was bad but it turned out to be just the AC compressor solenoid valve....I bought it off of Amazon for 38$ and when I removed the belly pan it was very easy to replace..... recharged it myself and everything appears to be real good,just gotta wait till this Florida summer is in full swing to be sure.

@@lenwoodcruze3594 I ordered a valve but it was a different size & the one in my car had metal shavings in it so I probably still need entire new compressor, how did yours go? This Eurotuner site has some listed for $400

@@DigitalDissident my ac stopped working again so I paid just 900$s to have a new compressor and all related parts installed....not sure why it stopped working but it's fast approaching summer here in Daytona Beach Florida and a properly working ac is a MUST.

Scary thing: I have had three out of the five listed that have failed. Luckily one of them, the cam lead and cam shaft, was under warranty. That would've set me back almost $2k at the stealership.

The best financial decision I've made in years was getting rid of my 2.0t Passat. It was awesome to drive, had a great interior, a really great sound system and good fuel economy but unfortunately ended up costing too much in maintenance. The steering lock problem was the last straw. It was a sad day when I got rid of it I don't miss the repeated, expensive headaches at all.
@DigitalDissident

i have steering lock warning, light comes on periodically but does not prevent normal operation. Did urs get progressively worse? I also have no cold AC, if solenoid swap doesn't fix I'll sell it because compressor swap is not worth it.

Nice to see a video recapping these failures letting me know I'm not the only one. :-) 2006 Passat here. I have had all those items fail at one point or another. Coil packs replaced twice...once under warranty. Even transmission developed a leak and needed replacing. You would not believe all of the things that went wrong/needed replacing. Platinum warranty (which I got for almost free) covered a lot of that. I do love my Passat (drives great) but will never buy a first year model again. Good news? So much of car has been replaced should be good to go for awhile.

Definitely depends on what kinda of engine it has in my opinion. I bought one because I needed a car to work in the summer not knowing much about VW specs/models (bmw guy) not knowing it was an FSI engine. I literally needed to replace almost everything and I’m almost 3k in repairs deep (no dealerships all by myself w my buddy). Cam follower was busted completely through so replaced cam follower as well as HPFP & LPFP. Had to do valve cover gasket, spark plugs, coil packs, coolant temp sensors, replaced all fuses & relays, fan control module, PCV & brakes + rotors + all brake lines. Ended up being a faulty ECU. I was able to save money & grabbed a used one that was updated & now the car can finally run w no epc light then brought it to VW to flash my vin on it. Gas is still very shitty but I missed 2 months of working so gonna keep it until end of the summer. I recommend the TSI engine. Much more reliable than shitty FSI

My 2008 2.0T passat running great, now it has already 218,000 km on it, two problems : 1. Driver side door hinge making noise when opening or closing . 2. Consuming engine oil. What I am worrying about is timing belt replacement, seems it is time to replace and may cost a lot.

I love your videos. Informative. However; as a previous Mark V Golf (Rabbit a la North America) owner and current Toyota driver, I have to ask: Other than fan folks/enthusiast nuts or first timers with the brand (as I was with my Golf 2.5 5-speed- I read all the Mk IV horror stories and yet STILL took the plunge), who would really buy a VW? They drive fantastically, have that magic, solid feel, and a general feel of "quality" that unfortunately just doesn't come through in real life. I had glitching audio, speed control, power windows, blowing headlamps (seriously, three sets of bulbs from brand new in two years!), failed clutch, every dash HVAC knob BUT one broke, the fat people on the passenger side breaking a wire in the seat resulting in an air bag light thing happened, bad steering column that had to be replaced because it started making a grinding noise, and probably a couple more things. What a blessing in disguise for me when some teenagers ran a stop sign and I T-boned them, totalling my car. I can say VW's are VERY safe! I can't imagine what all other problems it would have had, having watched your other excellent videos, Mr. Humble Mechanic. Since my VW, I've had a few other cars. I currently drive an 11th Gen Corolla S. Until I have deep pockets and less limited time, I am sacrificing soul for "perfection". It may be tinny compared to a VW, but I've had 0 real issues and at 62K already from new! Keep up the good work!!!

Let's see. 08 with 190,000 miles 1. Replaced axles because of boots. 2. Replace cam followers every 15,000 miles. Also fuel psi drops under heavy throttle 3. Steering column lock issues with occasional no start 4. Replaced the solenoid in the ac compressor twice 5. Replaced the electronic parking brake module because of a reoccurring fault. Easier to replace then have the software updated. 6 random led taillight fault. 7. Clear coat is shot With all this, I still love my car, but would love to trade it in on a CC

Yeah, I really like the idea, I say keep it up! I'd be interested to see one on MKIV dubs in particular, as I had 2. I put way more labor and money into those 2 cars than every other car combined; they deterred me heavily from buying dubs - probably not forever, but for awhile, so I would be interested in seeing what was considered common issues for them.

One thing not mentioned, probably due to rarity, is the oil pump bolt will come loose and eventually sheer off. This failure if not mended will grenade the engine. Timing chain and oil pump all need replacing. From dealer that's a $5,600 fix. It can show up through low pressure from fuel pumps. Be aware!
@jungleape
@jungleape 8 жыл бұрын
Hi, you forgot to mention, dual mass flywheel problems, oil pump failure due to worn hex key, EPB switch failure, EPB motors cracking and seizing, door handle mechanism failing, rust and corrosion especially around tailgate lights, plastic intake manifold flaps breaking, engine shutdown due to faulty injectors (recalled finally), this is just a few of the common faults seen in North America and Europe. B6 = avoid avoid avoid!!
@HumbleMechanic
@HumbleMechanic 8 жыл бұрын
+TheJungleApe in the US injectors were never recalled. There was a warranty extension, but not a recall. I did forget about the parking brake issues. Several software updates on that too. Intakes was another one that was common. Much more on the later B6 cars(I think I was thinking more along the BPY at the time of the video). But I also haven't seen many oil pump modules on that gen. I haven't ran into much rust issues. But that may be due to my location.

I had an 09 Passat Komfort purchased 5/2009 w/ 50 mi on the ODO. For the seven years I owned it, there was a love and hate relationship w it. The car was serviced at dealer and at a VW mechanic after the warranty ended. Failing water pumps (3), PCV valve failures, steering lock failures, coil packs burning out, and crankcases wore me thin. CV boots were chewed out before 50k. Last catastrophe was the leak of oil from the car causing the engine to seize at 120k miles. Would take $5k to fix. After it sat in my driveway for a year, I sold it to a junkyard because it was a shiny piece of metal that couldn’t work. My Accord, while not as refined, runs circles around this car. I wonder if VW’s Americanized strategy has helped with reliability.

We have a 2008 2.0T and we finally had to replace the faulty column last year to the tune of CAD800$ at the dealership. It was acting up mostly in the winter when things contracted due to cold weather I presume because it always worked fine during summer months. I researched it quite a bit and it appears that control board has bad micro switch and poor soldering on it but ultimately I decided to just let dealership replace it with the new unit. Will see how long this one will last as we plan on keeping the wagon for 15 years at least.

My 2007 Passat Wagon now has just around 160K miles (~250,000 km), and I just did $1100 worth of repairs. One of the failures was P0304 that HumbleMechanic mentioned, but I didn't see this video before I got it fixed, and the VW dealership didn't mention anything on a recall either. I also got my CV joints replaced back around at 100K miles so I am 2 out of 5 so far. I'm hoping to never face the other 3. =)

The more I took care of my B5 Passat, the more it bit me in the ass. Dealer finally bought it back from me. Problem is, you can't play catch up with these cars, and you need to live or work near a good vw indy shop. As for these cars lasting 300k, anything would last that long, given the work and investment put into them. Americans throw away Fords and GM's and Hyundais when the transmission goes at 200k; a Passat owner probably would fix the car. Passats are not viable for people with moderate means with only 1 car, no DIY skills, and without a friend in the business. Lack of support from VW and its dealers compounds the issue.

NO, it's not "taking care of your car". I've had a VW too, and let me tell you: they are fabulous feeling, chintzy, fragile Euro trash with endless quality and reliability problems. Good gawd, my 1996 Plymouth Breeze cloud car had fewer problems as a ten year old car I got just after high school than my VW Golf V (Rabbit) did from BRAND NEW. *I went directly from that Mopar to the 2008 VW in February 2009. I expected so much better. Toyota is where it's at if you want dead reliable.

Love your posts! Can't wait to see more of your R32! I have a 2008 Passat VR6 4motion with 258,000+ miles on it. I have had some sporadic, intermittent misfires that seem to go away as quickly as they appear. However, the car can function just fine for many months before the next mishap... Example: heading home from work, turn corner after stopping, car starts misfiring, shut car off when home, get scan tool, turn car back on...its running fine... Do you think this could be the coil packs? When I scan it the only codes will be the misfire(s)... A 2nd issue I just have been putting off diagnosing is my 12V outlets. They quick working about a year ago. Have you seen this before? I replaced the fuse...or attempted...it blew as soon as it made contact. Any idea's what to look for?

What’s the preventative measures to make sure the compressor doesn’t fail? Ours is still original. We have 2008 FSI model and no cam issues and I still have the original Hitachi fuel pump on it but I replaced a follower as a preventative measure at 90,000km. I have an 08 B6 3.6L 4Motion Sedan. It has 197,000 miles. I have the requisite Steering Lock Column Malfunction - occasionally -- which corrects itself by taking the key out, locking the wheel, then restarting. I am afraid it will eventually fail totally. Will VW fix this under the recall with the miles I have and the age of the car? Also, I have an issue with idling. In park, at random times, the rpms will surge to 2,000 then back to 500 or so. It does this repeatedly, and seems to happen once the car has warmed up a bit. Happens more in summer than winter. I had the codes read at an Autozone. Can't remember which ones it was storing, but they said it was fuel sensors on both sides of the motor. Not sure if that is the exact problem or a consequence of the problem. I also have issues with the front brakes rattling. This is because the mechanic 'forgot' to install the clips that keep the pads from jiggling. It obviously happens anytime the brakes ARE NOT applied. And lastly, my particular Passat came with the IPod adapter in lieu of the CD Changer magazine (in glove compartment since it is a Navigation model). Do you know where I might find a new (or used) magazine for the car? I would even be willing to trade the IPod adapter for a magazine if someone was interested. Thanks in advance for a reply and for posting this video! It is appreciated!

Hi, what about code 17669 PD unit injector cylinder 1 (n240) regulation range exceeded P1261 short with power? Please, could you make video on that? It causes a hot start problem apparently. No idea what to fix. New Injector? New sealing for injector? Bad connector on wire mash for injector? Or all together? Or some sensor?

My 2010 2.0T Tsi has been a great car. 105xxx miles and I've had to replace the water pump (warrantied) and get the valves decarbonized but that's about it. Had a boost pressure sensor wire fail but that's all I can think of. I'm going to run her until she blows (-: 250k incoming

Headlights!!!! Love our 2010 wagon (110,000k) but $450 to replace a bulb?? Come on already. Bumper and grill have to come off? Passenger side wheel off? Those designers had mental problems.

My b6:Passat is great. My only issue is the dual climate control. The driver side works but the passenger side is stuck on AC even with the heat on.

When I had to replace my Steering Column Lock, I used some JB Weld and glued an 11mm nuts on top of the two sheer bolts. Once it cured, I used a socket and wrench to unscrew it. It held enough to unscrew. Then when tightening they snapped back off so I wouldn't have to worry about the nuts staying there.

I own a Passat b6 TDI 2008 for over a year and here are the issues I had in the meantime: Dpf Sensor replaced DPF filter blocked EGR valve blocked (built-up carbon deposits) Mounting bar (door - driver side) broken - here is cod if you wonder what it is: 3C0837885H A/C - wasn't cooling and just replaced the solenoid rather than change the whole compressor $$$ things like this won't be a big problem If you are a DIY person, have a couple of good tools and like to spend time in the garage lol. I fixed all of them by myself and saved good money. The service for this car here in Australia is a bit expensive. The shortcoming of owning this car is for simple services I had to buy a different tool such as Socket and join socket to change the engine oil and DSG oil, Spline Socket (EGR valve), socket star e5 (mounting bar) But overall it's a great German Great video dude :)

I drive a 07 Passat and it “jerks” when shifting into third gear or into reverse. (Auto trans) and I can’t figure out why. I’ve replaced coils, spark plugs, maf sensor, air filter and it continues to jerk. Rpm shoots up sometimes before going going into different gear. Any suggestions on what it can be?

I like the idea of this video! My Volkswagen is a 2004 Passat. It had a sensor failure at 110kish miles, and now at 171k miles, my dash tells me something like "Oil pressure, stop motor." It's currently at the shop, and I'm waiting on the news to what exactly is wrong with my car. Fml

@mertz313
@mertz313 9 жыл бұрын
TheLukey21 Turns out my oil pump failed. Apparently, it is a common problem lol. I checked my oil at least twice a month. I did oil changes every 3,000 miles. I commute 50 miles every weekday, so I tried to always keep my car in the best shape possible. I bought a new oil pump last night for $120, and it will be installed this weekend. Hopefully that will fix my car..I've been driving a GMC Sierra for the past weeks, and I really miss paying $20 a week to fill up the tank LOL..

Wanda Ray Well, as of now my car is at 187k miles, so all is good now. My car had a dead battery once, and in that scenario, all I did was buy a new battery lol. As for the message center, I don't know. Maybe the wires needs to be soldered back? I know that tends to be an issue on this dash.

Door latch, door latch, door latch.... I must have spent nearly $1000 at our mechanic trying to get these resolved on a 2009 Passat wagon. They replaced both front door latch modules and cables, then replacing the cables again because they were not the right fit. Nothing worked. Every time it freezes the doors won’t unlock or re-latch when the door is opened. I’m kind of at my wits end with this and am considering ditching the car (it has other Passat $$ problems). Does anyone know if the Jetta Mk6 shares these door latch issues?
