Top 5 Features of the Garmin Overlander

There's a lot to like about the Garmin Overlander. We've narrowed it down to five of our favorite reasons to own this rockin' piece of gear. We'd like to present to you the pros of the Garmin Overlander, (as narrated by Dean and a handful of photobombing squirrels).
What we like:
1. The Garmin Overlander is a standalone device. You won't have to juggle multiple apps on your phone while using the Overlander. Just put it in place and let it do it's thing. Your phone is free remain on your favorite playlist while you drive. You can just keep heading down the road and navigating. It allows you to carry while ignoring texts from work and your mother-in-law. Boom. Win.
2. It really is a complete kit. Everything you need to make this device work comes right along with it. You get a genuine ram mount, charging cradle, and power cord.
3. It's fully integrated. On road navigation? Yep. The Overlander's got it. Off-road navigation? It's got that too. It also features a campsite database from iOverlander. You'll always know just where to stop to get your sleep on.
4. The interface is really easy to use. Toggling between on-road, off-road, and the campsite database is super-easy, even while you're driving.
5. It's reasonably sized. It's smaller than tablet and bigger than a phone. It's just right. It doesn't block your visibility of the road, but it's still big enough to read comfortably. It's like your favorite pair of relaxed fit jeans. The perfect size.

Nice 80 series Land Cruiser! I also have an Overlander and it is a great chunk of hardware. I love my 80 series, some Alaska offroad videos on my channel.

Great video! If pairing with an In reach mini does that need to have the gps subscription to communicate? Also does the location search function look up restaurants and businesses?

The subscription covers SOS and 2-way communication. It does not need a subscription for location. However the Overlander can do that on it's own. Not sure what businesses/restaurants are pre-loaded into the Overlander. I don't think any are. I think the only thing pre-loaded are the campsites.

Is there a good water repelling protective case that doesn’t inhibit functionality of Overlander unit?

Does it come pre-loaded with any on-road/off-road maps? Do you have to pay for maps and/or map updates? I it region locked to North America? Are you able to share your routes with the community and download other people's routes? Sorry for throwing a bunch of questions at you :)

Preloaded with both an on-road map as well as off-road topographic map. Not sure about the region capabilities. You can import/export/share route files pretty easily and there is a webportal that syncs with the device that makes file management and route planning pretty straight forward. Can these handle the rigor of a UTV! I don't want something breaking apart in the middle of Mojave desert.

These aren't designed for UTV's. However Garmin is coming out with a new smaller device designed for UTVs.

Great review! Nice device Garmin but, it is not waterproof! I wanted to mount this to my UTV. Adventure GPS right? 👎

I think they have a waterproof device for motorcycles. Might be worth looking into that. This device is more fullsize vehicle-centric than for UTVs.

Is the touch screen like those on a cellphone (glass like) or is it the plastic stuff like on the older Garmin units?

You do not. You can update the firmware, campsites, and map over WiFi. No monthly or annual subscription.

I like mine except for the glitch that puts a straight black line from where I last shut it off. I can’t even record tracks because it adds the straight line back to where the track started. This messes up the mileage and route directions to the track. Apparently Garmin is working on it but they have been for several months.

That's odd. So it think you're just making one long track instead of individual ones? Odd.

Blue Ridge Overland Gear No. When I power up and go to Explore there is a straight black line to where I last shut it off. When I record a track it adds the straight line after I save it. I drove 1 mile down a winding road and saved the track. The device added a straight line back to where I started from along side the squiggly line making my track 1.9 miles. Garmin knows about and have to find what part of the code is doing this and re write it. It’s irritating.
