Technical Log/General Notes: Have a Blast - This had some tricky lines that originally involved tapping and using hammer on's and pull off's to articulate like at 0:20. I decide to play this section alt picked out of comfort and lack of agility in my left hand. Had to transcribe most of it by ear and make adjustments to the fingerings because all the transcriptions I could find were in Drop C. Trefoil Scacuss - This solo I learnt back in my uni days, waking up at 4am to commute to a vacant practice room by 6am. Fun times! The sporadic switches between semiquaver-quaver-semiquaver cells and sextuplets makes it a challenge to play precisely. Took many attempts to get the muted Swybrid arpeggios towards the end as well. The Wanderers - This solo has been on my bucket list for a looong time. While certainly technically challenging to pull off, the harmony and note choices is what got me interested in this solo so much. It goes way off the deep end into melodic/harmonic minor harmony throughout which is a bold move considering the fairly simple minor chord progression. The bend played at 1:13 is to compensate for the fact my guitar only has 24frets. Sebon originally played this on a 27fret ESP which made that lick possible. Where Is Now? - The most frightening solo on the list which sparked the first title idea for the video "Top 5 Solos That Terrify Me". (fitted for the Halloween release) This solo I attempted to learn many years prior after having a lesson with Jakub himself in 2017. Keeping the time feel in check in the first phase of the solo was the most challenging part. Also the fact that it's all muted legato gave an extra layer of difficulty to the left hand. I've worked mostly on my alt picking for the last few years so I found those sections quite a breeze to get through. Overall, this solo just sounds broken! Like a smashed jar that was glued back together with pieces missing XD. The Crack - Speaking of broken solos, THIS one takes the cake. On all levels this was a nightmare to play. I spent months isolating almost every section, Practicing at 50% - 75% speed. Most of the faster sextuplet rhythms were outside of my left hands range of speed so these parts took the longest. Andre plays this solo with a classical fingering technique which I'm no where near trained to do. The backing track was a great transcribing assignment. I managed to work out most of the general harmony and basic drum patterns based on the original. Some very strange chords that I've never encountered in that context before. While not 100% accurate to the original, I learnt lots from the experience!

Man, your ears are great when it comes to dissecting what other guitarists are doing and obviously your skills are as well since it can match your ears. Covers you see often on anywhere often just memorized the notes and played along the backing track without paying any attention to the small details that gives the original track they're trying to copy the oomph. You got that part down, IMO that's a huge part of guitar mastery.

I love hearing what can be achieved when you put a lot of time, dedication, practice and love into playing ! Where is now is crazy ! I'll have to go check out the original because I'm yet to listen to them. I'm curious is there a reason you switched to the Pink Resq Strandberg ? Does that have different pickups to your green guitar? :)

@@Nickshreds890 Thanks for all your kind words! I switched to the RESQ simply because I needed a trem for a few of the lines in sebons solo. I found the green NX had a much more consistent and accurate tone across all the solos. The Dimarzio replacement pickups make a huge difference!

Great playing. This list of solos however does reveal how much a lot of prog metal guitar players sound alike, or rather how similar their approaches are. It's fine to able to rip through modes and scales, with the requisite wide interval tapped licks, some selective picking, and or sweeps here and there, but you could have easily told me these were all one player's leads (since aside from Periphery, I've never heard of any of these groups), and I'd have believed you. That tells me that this style is in the zombie factory stage of its life cycle, or it's just sport, and not really art.
