@john thonig I would love to own everyone of them. To me they are the best looking Corvettes ever made but my favorite is the 63 Split window and the 66 Corvette 427.There might be some quicker and have a higher top speed , but when you see a 60's Corvette all you can say is "WOW" I loved my uncles 78 6.6 Trans Am but it didn't come close to the 60's Corvette especially the 63 & 66 !

@FB REDSTAR My neighbor had a 63 split back in 1989,he bought it off some kid for $10,000,(a steal!).Didn"t run right, had the wrong intake manifold on it.Had the engine professionally rebuilt, all original, cork gaskets the whole deal.I loved that car,he eventually sold it.Told me the car was so aerodynamic that even with the windows down, the air didn"t come in,blew right by.Not a fun car to drive in the summer, lots of engine heat even with a small block .

My favorite Corvettes were the 1962 - 1967, and agree the spit windows is cool. It enhanced the appearance, structural integrity was optimal. Duntolph was a race car driver an wanted to see where other driver's were behind him. I can relate to this cause did do some racing a few years back. Those 62-67 were compact agile great handling cars until Shelby Cobra coupe, and Shelby GT350 came into the picture. GT40 was in a different class though also perfected by Shelby and to win the greatest endurance race of La Mans 4 times to beat Ferrari

I have instructions in one of my old custom car magazines on how to cut out the center bar from your '63 Vette's rear window. I wonder how many guys did that. I'll take it with the center bar any day. The first Corvette I ever saw in '64 was a '63 split window. Me and my brother were on the roof of our garage and i spotted it in a neighbor's back yard, three houses away. I grabbed my camera and had to get down there to take pictures, which I still have.

Having grown up in Los Angeles, I can attest that the smog regs. were desperately needed. Computer controls have since enabled automakers to build cleanest-ever cars with great performance and fuel economy. One of the great technological triumphs, achievable only because government regulations pressured the automakers to do the right thing, and the industry eventually rose to the occasion.

C5 owner here, loving the C1,.. 6 cylinder is fine, as it was to compete against 4 cylinder MG and Healy imports.. It was faster and just as nimble.. perfect for its time. The far more expensive Jaguar cars were 6 cylinder, though double overhead cam hemi chamber engines.. not a direct competitor to the early Corvette. People need to put these cars into historical context. The 150 horse blue flame was right for the time...

You still had 380 ft. lbs of torque in the 74 BB Corvette. No mention of the L-82 SB available in the '74 and how it matched up against the BB. Chevy had lots of over the counter parts available and they knew people would hop-up these motors plus GM played with the HP numbers, quoting net and not gross HP numbers after '70. These engines weren't as weak as people think.

For looks I would say the 58'-62', I think the 60' looked the best but a puny 283 engine, in 62' it got the FI 327@360hp as an option but the grill didn't look as nice. For performance it would be the 67-69 L88\ZL1 cars, they got the most powerful V8 GM ever used in production car in the muscle car era although only officially rated at 430hp it closer to 550hp.

My Dad GAVE me a 77 with T-tops. It had a LOT of problems but for free I could look past them. Fast forward a few months and it was involved in a car accident which gomed the front clip. So I put an 82 front and rear bumper on it and got it repainted. Then the engine spun a rod bearing so I put an LS6 468 into it. When I got the car it was unoriginal, so I saw no problem in doing what I wanted to with the car. Purists may scream, but I don't want to sell the car. If nothing else, I can fire it up and rattle the neighbors windows.

How is a split window '63 a hated car? Today it is the most sought after body style. George Barris had a body kit that shaved the fin and replaced the window with a '64's rear window, available for the '63 split. Many owners did this to their car not knowing what they command today. BJ Auction had one break 350,000 this year.

The split window is not hated by anyone I know. Next to the '74-'77 models it is my favorite. The fact is there are probably more split window Vettes now than were ever made. Back in the early '90s when I owned a couple of mid '70s models, a number of places offered split window conversion kits, which could be used to restore a '63, but also fit any '63-'67 model.

I'm guessing you answered your own question and didn't realized it. It's back in the past when the 64 came out and people hated the rear split so much that they replaced it with a one piece. That's all I can think the narrater meant. PS, Is George Barris the person Jay Leno mentioned did this in his Corvette YT video?

Port intake manifoild, came, heads, bore out throttle bodies, fuel pump, and normaly 350 upgrades will increase hp. crossfire puts out around 600 cfms. its the intake that kills.

The 1953 Corvette was a watershed automobile for the U.S. car industry, irregardless of it's 'underpowered' 6-cylinder engine. It had a beautiful, simple body design. The C2 Corvettes of all years are beautiful. My favorite body style however is the C4, especially the slight softening of the front body corners and the redesign of the back end as of the 1991 model year. And the clam-shell hood of the C4 body style makes access to the engine compartment very easy. Mine is a 1992 C4 convertible with the base LT1 engine and auto transmission. It is a beautiful car and has more than enough performance for me and surprise; it really isn't all that bad on fuel consumption considering it's level of performance. The Corvette continues to be a great value in world-class sports cars.

J Manning -- Back when they did it, the trend was to update your car to the most modern look and performance. This is also why many pulled original engines and dropped in 396s and 427s in the late '60s. Only in the mid to late '70s did originality begin to mean something. Don't judge the past with today's eyes.

My favorite is the one my Dad bought new in late '72 which is the '73 350 L82 with manual 4-speed trans. I still have it and it's red with black leather interior. My father had it restored to museum quality and had all the emissions junk removed and engine tuned to higher specs when rebuilt and it screams really well on the road. I like the '73 because it is the only model ever to have the old-school upswept rear end with chrome bumpers and the modern less clunky and aerodynamic sleek front end. My favorite style of all time! Road & Track rated the 350 as the best all around performer due to the better handling characteristics with the small block's lighter weight and similar horsepower. This car also had hardened valve seats so you could run either unleaded or leaded gas through it which was cool too!

I rented a brand new White 1984 Corvette with a Targa roof. Round trip for a few days from Fort Lauderdale to Key West. I must say it was great at the time. I managed to really heat the oil up. The oil cooler was too small for Florida. It didn't have a hood, per se. The entire front cowl tilted forward. It was an awesome display to see all that high tech suspension and the entire tires exposed. No vette previous to the 1985 model year handled GREAT, far as I was concerned. The 1985 handled brilliantly. It was not a powerhouse, but the handling was on par with almost anything today. And, at the time it seemed at least enough to get out of its own way. I really pushed the car to its limits on handling and was and still am duly impressed to this day. Ever since then the Corvette has been on my radar. But, the C8 is what I really want.

Oh yeah! Back in the day, we called the Mustang a "daddy-bought hot rod" - an insult. I had a '57 'Vette with a '65 FI motor fed by a Holley on a 350 high-rise. 4.56 rear and 2.20 close-ratio 4-speed. I'd go cruising Fri and Sat nights on Forest Lane in North Dallas. Let my girlfriend drive once in a while. She would pick on a daddy-bought hot rod at a red light and always shut 'em down. Beat by a girl! The kids' jaws would hit the ground as they got their asses kicked by a girl driving a ten year old Corvette. Good times.
