If that's the case why aren't more field goal kickers making field goals from that distance at mile high stadium? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤦♂️ according to your logic 70-75 would be the distance that's equivalent to Tom Dempsey yet has anyone even attempted that distance?
@TheSSUltimateGoku3 жыл бұрын
@@chrislosh5438 that simple because not every kicker is good enough to be able to kick field goals that long. Just because mile high gives you a high voltage advantage with the atmosphere doesn’t mean that the kicker is actually good at kicking long distance or kicking accurately. The three kickers that kicked in mile high were accurate and long distance kickers. Just because you have an advantage to allow your kick to get more impact for the chances of it being good doesn’t mean that it’s going to be necessarily good if the kick is shit.

3 of the five kicks were in Denver, with the high altitude. The Dempsey FG was the most impressive.

tony bronson sorry but it wasn't, the uprights were in the front of the end zone back then. So in my opinion the best one was David Akers kick.
@tonybronson27256 жыл бұрын
Susan Paulakovich the positioning of the goalposts only means that Dempsey's kick was from his own 37 yard line, while Akers' and all the others were from their own 47 yard line. It doesn't mean that Dempsey's kick was 10 yards shorter, so I don't get your point.

@michaelreep29126 жыл бұрын
tony bronson, I definitely agree!! Dempsey only had half of his right foot, kicking straight on (not soccer style), and not being in high altitude. I have played soccer since I was 8, trying to learn to kick a football is more difficult than most people understand. I can't imagine having to do it with half my foot missing. (I am waiting for the argument about the "leather block" in his boot). The man still had to hit that ball just right for that kick. All those variables added together= Most Impressive Kick in NFL History.
@davidlafleche11426 жыл бұрын
The most impressive thing about Dempsey's kick was that it was at sea-level, and he did it in heavy, salty air, on a muddy field. You Tube used to have the video of the original CBS-TV call (Don Criqui), though it has been removed. But I swear I heard a "BOOM!" echo right after he kicked it. Even the Lions were awed. One of them said, "Dempsey could try that a hundred times, and couldn't hit it as sweet. But that one...boy, did he hit it sweet!"
@eddiebrown6875 жыл бұрын
Dempsey only had half a right foot, so he kicked it straight away. It was on grass, not in Denver, and won the game 19-17 at the end. No question, the greatest kick ever.

@richtucci49535 жыл бұрын
I remember watching Dempsey's kick and what was then so amazing is that here had not been any other 60 yard plus FG in the NFL history in 1970. I think he beat the record by 8 yards or so. He had a history of being long on FG's. What really made it even more amazing for me was when I went back to school on Monday. I was a HS senior then. As soon as I had a chance I roamed the athletic field and stood and stared from the same distance that Dempsey did the day before, 64 yards from the goal post, which looked to be a half of mile away. Tom had some kind of deformed foot that was not only shortened, it was also squared off in the front like a sledge hammer. With being fitted with some special shoe(s) he certainly used it all to his advantage. He was very conventional kicker, no soccer-stylefor him. In fact, I do not recall the NFL having many soccer type kickers in the 60's. Imagine the punishment that poor football experience every time Tom Dempsey "put the hammer down" on that helpless piece of leather.

Dempsey's kick was completely at sea level and with N.O. humidity levels. The highest land in New Orleans is about 18 feet above sea level. If a kicker can consistently make field goals from 60 yards then in theory the offense only has to move the ball 25 yards on each possession in order to get the ball to the 50 yard line, then kick a 62 yard field goal.Kickers just need to keep kicking because once a kicker can make the kick muscle memory he is set.
