You hit the nail on the head! so many things I know make sense intuitively, but had never put into words. When you're talking about it "pushing to 1" so much, I try to remember the pandeiro swing thing where the 4th 16th note is a little lazy. Having that running in the background makes it feel right.

As a bassist I noticed the jazz fusion guys of 1980's (like Chick Corea) played the bass jump upwards. That sounds anti brazilian tradition but again very fusionistic. Chick Corea by the way started out as a salsa player and salsa is in a way the opposite of brazilian groove.
