Top 5 Mistakes on the Efoil
Just like any other new activity, you are going to make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes when they try to ride or stand on the foil. Getting up on the efoil is way easier than any other hydrofoil board, but there are still many pitfalls. We will address the top five that we see with our students and how to correct these mistake. The top five efoil riding mistakes that we will cover are:
#1: TOO SLOW
#2: TOO FAR BACK
#3: HIGH ON THE FOIL
#4: BAD POSTURE
#5: TURNING WITH THE TOES

Awesome Video from former Iroquois Point resident ! I'm now building my own e-foil after many years of wakesurfing behind my Malibu surf-boat in Atlanta, GA. Thankful for your useful tips on what "not to do" while learning. It's quite a challenge going from "front foot is gas, back foot is brake" while surfing behind a boat's 4-5' wave. Looking forward to foiling off the coast of Florida !

Excellent and useful, thank you! I noticed Donovan kept his feet quite close to each other, in a much narrower stance than the one we have on kitefoils, is that recommended for efoiling or just his style?

We use a narrow stance on the efoil, and wing foil. It gives us much more control over the foil. A wide stance simply gives you a wider range of where you apply your weight over the foil (more space forward and behind the foil). A narrow stance gives a more accurate range over the foil (less space forward and behind the foil). We find that we have more control with the narrow stance. Not sure about kite foils as we don't ride those.

Sorry so slow. We represent Lift efoils, but most of the brands make a quality board. Quality matters, but if you are not surfing waves or wakes, any board will do. Lift is excellent in all conditions, but especially in waves and wakes. Try two or three brands that you are interested in before making your investment. We could tell you all the differences, but it will still sound like we are biased towards Lift.

Do you have any thoughts on why efoiling produces so much strain & twisting in my aft knee that I just cannot enjoy this sport? I have a 4'9 and typically I'll have no more than two sessions a week before I'm almost crippled with knee pain

Aloha @kippywylie. All board sports put some strain on the body, especially in the learning stages. Once you get proficient, your body mechanics should be more aligned with the board and actions. My first question to you: "is this a pre-existing injury?". If so, you may be aggravating the old injury due to the new movements. My second question to you: "are you riding on foil with a level board?". If not, it sounds like you are carrying too much weight on the back foot. Question? Is a permit required to efoil on the ocean

Aloha. In Hawaii, a permit is NOT required to ride an efoil on the ocean. As efoils are classified as vessels, Hawaii requires that you register your efoil with DOBOR, DLNR. A boat safety course is also recommended by DOBOR, but not required.

Thanks for the video. I have watched it a number of times now. I still have a ways to go. Definitely doing the toe/heel thing. Question for you though. I'm trying to get my Efoil allowed on the lake I live on. The HOA hates anything new. One guy on the HOA board was saying that the high speed hum from the prop hurts aquatic life and that he pointed to a Bill in Hawaii about restricting EFoil use. Bill: HB858. Did that bill ever get passed? What kind of laws are you stuck with now? Thank you

Aloha and mahalo for the question. HB858 did not make it out of committee and there did not pass. This rep was working in the interest of a few high-end beachfront property owners, and disguised it to be in protection of marine life and other water craft. There has been independent studies showing the lack of impact on marine life. I will try to find the studies on my end and share with the community.

And I still prone foil, DW foil, and wing foil. Stop trying to shame people who love to foil but don't enjoy the struggle. The majority of our customers are (1) older men who used to surf, but now are out of shape, or (2) surfers with shoulder injuries. Both groups love that there is this option to get back on the waves without fitness or injury concerns. Enjoy the water!

first mistake should be - buying the efoil. grow a pair, get a kite or wing or paddle. for buddha's sake.

this may be suitable for you, but many of our customers have taken too many injuries from their attempts on a friend's SUP or prone foil. We get them up on the efoil with minimal effort, and little risk, and get them confident in controlling the foil. Many of these customers tell us how beneficial it was for them to learn foiling with us so they can safely SUP/prone/Wing foil on their own. Don't hate the efoilers. We are growing the foiling sport faster and safer than you can imagine. Mahalo for your comment. Keep on spreading the psych that is foiling.

@@mikeg250gt that is exactly what happened to me. Efoil was first and easiest way to learn the foil. Then I started prone foiling, and currently working through progressions for wing foiling. I LOVE the wing foil most at this point because of its level of complexity and daily challenge presented.
