Mate, just say the Cairn bit of Glencairn as though you were talking about the city, named after a man from these islands anyway - Cairns. You need not dip into aspirated Gaelic when speaking English, save for nouns that pertain to specific company names that elect not to be anglicised - it comes from Gaelic, sure, but it’s a normal word in the English dictionary.

I gotta say, nothing irritates me more than when I watch someone/hear someone tell someone else to "stick a drop of water" in their dram before they have tasted it first. Im a massive cask-strength-heavy-peat kinda guy but rarely, if ever, add water because im here for the aggressive character. Water is a tool to bring out alternative dimension and flavour and tone down others, not a standard action you should perform with every dram. Taste THEN attenuate if you need.
@benonyoutube3 жыл бұрын
I will follow up by saying I 100% agree that it is 100% up to the drinker. What disappoints me is someone who never gives the dram a chance before diluting.

I can share one of my lucky mistakes: I left a bottle of Maker's Mark in a trunk of my car for about a month and it turned into the best thing I've ever had. It's like drinking liquid roasted popcorn topped with caramel and honey. I now got 4 more bottles rolling to get the same results xD

One of the best things I learned was through a tutored tasting at a distillery - I used to drink whisky (rye/bourbon) on the rocks, but upon tasting it neat in a nosing glass, it was a revelation. The whisky sommelier gave us water and pipettes (droppers) and suggested to try the first sip without water and then add drop by drop to see what ratio we preferred. I rarely ever use ice now, unless I find the whisky not to my taste when neat (in which case I switch to a rocks glass or tumbler). I use this approach with various types of whisky and it works for me. The sommelier also reminded people that everyone's palette is different - he doesn't like peaty whisky, so he referred questions about the peaty ones to another sommelier. I would also say that many of Phil's suggestions in the video apply to wine as well - the shape of the glass, the temperature and light where it's stored / drunk, etc. At the end of it all, the drinks should be accessible and people should drink them in the fashion that they enjoy the taste - for me, that's neat in a nosing glass or on ice in a rocks glass.

True that. I’m a big fan of the monkey shoulder. Great malt that can drunk neat or in an Old Fashioned (or just with ice). It’s a great house dram. But also - Compass Box has blended whiskies that are superior to many single malts. The best way to judge is the smell and taste I guess.

Hey there, Another mistake I came across quite a bit (I work in a whisky bar/shop in London) is that newbies to whisky who have money tend to stick to the Macallans or Dalmore’s. I had a guy who told me that he was new to whisky and wanted to spend £300 on 1 bottle. This blow my mind. For me, if your new to it, try lots of different whiskies. I sold him a Glendronach 21 and a Nikki Pure Malt. Another guy came into the bar and told me that he hates Scotch so I should not offer him one. I started him off with light Bourbon, then a Teeling Pot Still, then a Cotwalds Founders Choice (Highly recommend this by the way, great English whisky) and then at random I grabbed a bottle of Scotch and poured him a taster, he loved it... Cool video, Agreed on all 5 points.

drink what you like to drink, how you like to drink it. Every one's opinions about how other people enjoy what they bought with their own hard-earned money is pointless. Not worth your time. If other people drinking it like that affects you so much that you need to make a video, you should probably look in the mirror and ask yourself, "why?"

Beginner here, is it ok to use a snifter instead of a glen cairn?
@FirstPhilWhisky3 жыл бұрын
Hey! I made my channel for people just like you. Snifter is great. The big idea is if you want to smell your whisky. The snifter is great for that. The Glen cairn is excellent too and sometimes preferred as it has a slightly smaller rim focusing the aromas a just a little bit more. But honestly and personally, I think it’s probably only a 5% difference between the two glasses. It’s a much much bigger difference between a tumbler and a snifter though if you want to capture the aromas.

a good way to explore whisky is to find a whisky club in your area. My Sept meets once a month, we limit the attendance to 23 people, and we share 5 bottles each meeting. This equates to five standard drinks in a night. Not so much that anyone becomes unruly, but certainly too much to try and drive home. Over a year of eleven meetings, we taste 55 bottles, at an average cost of AUD8 per dram. One big advantage is that if you find a whisky you DON'T like, the taste has only cost AUD8, rather than spending a lot more money to buy a whole bottle. In 5 years I have tasted over 250 drams at an average cost of AUD8. Some have been great, some have been good, some have been bad, but I have learnt a lot.

One more thing for me about the tulip glass (glencairn) besides concentrating the aromas is that I found It gives you more control when pouring the whisky into your mouth over tumblers or other wider glass. Instead of hitting your palate full blast, the whisky just kinda rolls off more slowly and smoothly from the tip of the tongue until it finally coats it, and it just makes for a more enjoyable experience (or perhaps it's just a placebo effect but for me it's quite distinct) Cheers from Indonesia, Phil!

I can tell that you're very passionate about this, but keep in mind, that there's a fine line between sounding knowledgeable and sounding pretentious. This of course goes for the people writing the marketing for alcohols as well. Terms like "expression" can sometimes stray too far onto the wrong side of the pretentious line. Good production value though. Best of luck.

They recommend pouring a little water when drinking Laphroaig or Lagavulin. So your mistake # 1 is stupid and I’ll-stated. I don’t know why KZbin recommended your video. This is why I prefer watching the whiskey marketing guys instead
@FirstPhilWhisky3 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex. Thanks for watching. I think you misinterpreted the point. It’s just that you need to know WHY you’re doing it. Not that it’s good or bad, because there is a time and place for both ice and water. If you watch video before this you will see I recommend exactly what you said when drinking the Lagavulin 8. Adding a drop of water can open the whisky up like air in a glass of wine. However that doesn’t mean you should add water (or ice) every time you drink whisky, as some whiskies are at a much lower strength and the distillery has already watered the whisky down. The mistake is not knowing when to add what.
@decodefaoite94033 жыл бұрын
