2nd gen mini coopers are a great first car. not because they are reliable but because you are FORCED to learn new things if you plan on being a dyi mechanic. so far I have changed my valve cover, replaced my timing chain, changed my spark plugs/coil packs and done my own brakes. the high mechanic price forces you to work on this car yourself. I own a civic 2003 and a 1991 corolla and I never realized how needy mini coopers are. It def gives you an appreciation for reliable cars like Hondas and Toyotas. I would go so far as to say that anyone that has a mini as their main driver and does their own maintenance. kudos to you. if you can survive this mechanical nightmare, its a very rewarding and fun car and it shows you can survive working on a normal car.

This is the only part of the new Mini that copies the original LBC's (Little British Cars). I bought my 1962 MG Midget in 1968. Withing a year, I learned more than I ever thought I would ever know about automobile mechanics. If you had an LBC and you weren't working on it, it meant you weren't driving it. Being a poor college kid, I couldn't afford to take it to the garage. On the positive side, I know a lot about mechanical issues with cars and I still love working on them.

I own a 2008 R56 base MINI. Many serious problems with this model are because of improper maintenance. Thankfully, I ignored the company's recommended interval of 15,000 mile oil changes. Since new, I changed the oil every 3000 miles. Because of that, my car has been a gem, only needing routine service. If you looking to buy, try to find one with a good service record.

Timing Chains and Chain Guides are a notorious issue for the N14 turbo engine from 2007-2011. 2012 and newer N16 turbo engines did not have this problem anymore. The naturally aspirated version from all years also seems to be unaffected by that as well. Coil Packs are also very common, but pretty minor. Cooling systems too, like every other Euro car out there. They're a pretty solid, and insanely fun vehicle otherwise. Use 5w30 or 5w40 oil as opposed to the recommended 0w30 and 0w40, the seem to run a little better and not consume oil running the thicker weight. And keep up with the maintenance, and it can last a long time. Knew a few people who got over 200k miles out of their R56/R57 Minis with very few repairs.

Last year I bought a 2009 Mini Cooper R56 and it did give problems 😂 but, mainly because the previous owners NEVER gave proper maintenance. Last problem I’ve been dealing with is are idling issues. I have an r56 2007 Mini Cooper and I love it, it’s had a few minor problems like rocker box gasket needing replacing and eventually the clutch as had done 120k miles but it’s well maintained and runs sweet, use it as my daily driver and love how well it drives, tbh if people just learned how to keep oil topped up and do basic checks and maintenance then these are great little cars whether first time or as a cheap work horse like mine 👍

I've had my 2007 Mini cooper r56 base for 5 months and I bought it at 119k miles and I've put 5k miles on it. So far I've replaced the spark plugs, one of the ignition coils, and other small things like the windshield washer hose and blinker bulb. I took it to a mechanic to have it inspected and he recharged the a/c because it wasn't working. I didn't even know because it was during the winter lol. I already bought a valve cover gasket but I haven't gotten around to changing it and I'm also going to replace the rear shocks when I get the chance. My mechanic will replace the timing chain when I get the money but it's not too bad right now. My car is also an absolute oil guzzler lmao. Besides that, it's been an amazing car and I got a great deal on it. I wouldn't trade it for anything

You missed THE #1 issue for 2007-2010: massive oil consumption (like a quart/1,000 miles) which leads to oil starvation and the timing chain guide and chain self-destruct taking the engine with them. Oh yeah, the check engjne light will come on then too! Invest in a Cravenspeed dipstick and monitor weekly. And buy 2011-2013 models which are slightly better (still monitor oil level weekly).
@hobbysickness2 жыл бұрын
Actually no mention of this (a plague on the N14 block he's reviewing...) OR the premature timing chain failures that engine struggles with,.. kind of surprising. People are told to look for the faint sounds of a death rattle when inspecting these for purchase because of how frequently the chain goes.

I bought one new in 2007, the first year Consumer Reports included it in its Recommended Cars category. I'm still driving it. I’m a mini specialist and there are a few more things that are definitely common that you missed. Also, the door latch is not some thing that I think I’ve ever seen anyone have a problem with. I’m not sure what you’re referring to there. It needs to be mentioned to, that there are some parts that aftermarket parts don’t work. The thermostat being one of them, and coil packs being the other.

1A is my go-to for anything I need to do on my Cooper. Clear, simple. That said, the list was interesting, but I would add to that timing chains/guides for N14s, carbon build-up for pre-2011s. And the outrageous design of the fobs that require you to cut open the housing, unsolder the old battery, solder in the new one and put it all back together with CrazyGlue or buy a blank housing.

I have struggled with our mini r56 for years. Engine light after engine light. Replaced almost everything, leaking cooling system, cooling reservoir. Some sensors. aircon compressor, leaking aircon pipes. Turbo alternative water cooler pump, new clutch aftermarket fitted, complete rubbish. 30k, dead. New clutch kit again, this time BMW original at great cost which seem goo, night and day difference. New Turbo, at great cost. Engine light continues to pop up. After replacing waterpump, thermostat, I decided to replace fuel injectors for peace of mind. Engine getting old. 150k. Still engine light. I never got a code before to help me. New spark plugs, not the first time. Still engine light. Further checking I got a code for engine imbalance pointing to ignition coil. Rotated 1 and 2 and fault went with it. Replaced all 4 coils with NKG. Not expensive and very easy to do. The engine has been running well and can rev up nicely. No engine light. My recommendation is to anyone owning a mini to replace fuel injectors and coils a 80k. This will solve a lot of heart aches and money. The diagnostics failed to show engine imbalance as a code only an engine light and no code. Perhaps a $3000 scanner would have shown the problem. I should have bought one, would have saved a lot of money. Mini dealer in Australia charges $250 per hour. When they see a window wiper code they say, these things happen and have no solution. The mini has been the mist expensive car I ever owned in repairs. The body will last 25 years and is very well made. The n14 engine is a dud and replacements are not made available at reasonable a price. No good used are available which should be a warning. Servicing pricing is ridiculous. This car is for my wife who likes the car, a childhood dream. Engine is using a lot of oil. We will keep it until it blows up. We spend twice the purchase price on repairs. We bought for $10k Aus with 103k on clock. Cheers

Ok so ? .. Love the look of these cars and always wanted one but heard so many bad things i steered away. The door latch issues i actually had with a 78 and 79 honda civic. Curious also does the S have the same issues as that is what i am actually looking at atm.

I kinda feel like these cars get a bad rap. If you are dealing with a car this old you are likely over 100K miles and most cars in this window are likely to have issues crop up. Mini sold so many cars in America at least that parts aren't that difficult to buy at affordable prices. The market is rich and Mini owners tend to want to keep their cars running. So, it isn't bad at all. Also, if all hope is lost on your current Mini there are enough of them sold that there is a ready supply of used Minis to purchase instead if you decide to go that route. Last, and these days it goes for all cars not just Minis, learn to drive a stick. Dealers have all kinda of problems selling cars with manual transmissions bc no one learns how to drive them anymore. You can easily find cars with stick shifts that have been on the lot for 4+ months and they will practically give them away.

I got a 2007 Mini Cooper I first rented , then i bought it as the price was $5K above the Blue book. Now I have 75K miles and basically have had no problem. Brake pads are not cheap, but I have had leaks here and there over the last few years. I got greasy spots in my garage, so what ? Now I just got the sign of engine "stress", not overheating, just that stress sign. I took it to the dealer and got an oil change. Double checked it, when I got home, to make sure they really did ! Ha...They also gave me an estimate of what suggested repairs should be as I refused their electronic eval. I just wanted an oil change ! not any diagnosis. Well, they found multiple leaks and even suggested I replaced all tires, which are all having deep threads and grooves, so NO, not ready to replace. The total was over $8.7K ! Unf.... believable as it is more than the current value of the car. What disgusting scam ! Did they think I am an idiot ? I will drive that car with the engine light on, as a fixture. I will check my oil often and drive less aggressively. I only drive between the grocery store and my house. I am retired ! and considering riding my bicycle.......Screw the cars......and the car dealers, well, metaphorically........Not getting my business, ever again. What scam ! They never mentioned any potential damage to the catalytic converter.....why not ???these suckers are expensive and never in all these years I had the car, one of these frauds, mentioned I should replace the spark plugs.....Hmmmm. They prefer to take down engines and replace the seals......they can make more money that way.......

I always wanted the "new" MINI to be a success but BMW fought me all the way. It's always been about perception and profit. Any "new" MINI would be a great car to rent but not to buy or lease. The "classic" aka "real" Austin Mini (Cooper) never pretended to be anything it wasn't. As a previous owner of one, I can tell you that anyone who bought a "Little British Car" aka LBC loved small fun cars and he/she knew that working on them was part of the fun of ownership. It eventually became part of you. The "new" BMW/MINI has always been about prestige and image. It never appealed to me and still doesn't.

Top problem: Peugeot N14 motor, not that the N18 is all that wonderful, but a bit better. Really, 2nd Gens are not the best MINIs. I’ve owned quite a few MINIs and currently have a GP1, GP3, F57, and F60. Always skipped the 2nd gen due to all the problems they give. They’re money pits.
