Hi, thank you for this helpful video. My sister just got a 2009 Toyota Highlander but the engine serial number is difficult to check without removing the engine first. Where else in the car can this be seen? OR is there a way to get around the engine (without removal) in order to see it? Thank you in anticipation!

In my humble opinion as these Highlander models are now aging, the number 1 problem is with the Engine Oil Cooler Pipe Leak as Toyota calls it but if you're driving and a pinhole opens up in one of these lines, you will have a major oil leak that may destroy your engine in a few minutes! This just happened to my wife as she was driving our 2011 Highlander Limited with the 3.5L 2GRFE engine. She called me when the low oil pressure light came on and I told her to get to a safe place to pull over and then shut off the engine. When I got there, the front undercarriage all the way to the back of the car mainly on the passenger side was just covered in oil. No oil registered on the dipstick. I added 5 quarts of oil and fortunately it started but oil was pouring from one of the oil cooler lines with the leak so I shut it down and had it towed to my Toyota Dealership. I still don't yet if permanent engine damage has occurred so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. This is a known problem by Toyota and they issued a TSB(T-SB-02011-11) back in 2014 and also included Warranty Enhancement Program - ZE2. I've done a lot of research on this over the past couple of days and it seems that many more occurrences of this problem are happening as vehicles reach 100,000 miles or more. The fix by Toyota is to replace the rubber oil cooler lines with metal pipe ones because the rubber ones become brittle over time. It's not a matter of if the rubber lines will fail but when and it's a catastrophic engine failure waiting to happen. The part number for the genuine Toyota Engine Oil Cooler Pipe replacement is 15767-31020. FYI, this also pertains to certain Siennas, Venzas, and a couple of Lexus models. I have no idea why there is no recall for this as it's dangerous if this leaks happens to you while driving in certain areas at certain times and if you can't pull over fast enough the engine will be destroyed due to oil starvation and that will cost thousands of dollars to replace. I have filed a complaint with the NHTSA and advise anybody else who had the same thing happen to do likewise. But first and foremost, if you have one of these Highlanders, check those oil cooler lines located under the car near the oil filter cartridge housing unit. If you still have the rubber lines, get them replaced ASAP by a Toyota Dealer or reputable mechanic! It may save your engine or possibly even your life.

Had this almost exact same situation happen to me 2 weeks ago pulling into my driveway. It was Saturday so I bought the all metal part at Advance Auto and did it myself. It’s always/only been serviced at the original dealership, so I called them a bit angry Monday that they never once noticed or recommended a replacement of a high pressure oil hose in 10 years it’s been in there…

I have a 2009 Toyota Highlander Limited w/ 114000 mi, and I love it. But Warning!!! If you have the tow package there is an oil hose that goes to an oil cooler, it has metal ends but a synthetic hose between them. This hose can blow which leads to an immediate loss of oil pressure and an alarm telling you to stop at once. When it happened to me, luckily, I was on a country back road so I was able to stop right away but if I had been on an Interstate Highway I probably would have fried my engine trying to pullover or exit. Cost of repair by dealer $564.00. My side mechanic was on vacation who probably would have cost 25% less. Toyota was aware of the problem because they had a 10-year voluntary recall to get the problem fixed, I missed it by 6 months. The replacement part is all metal. My advice is to replace it now rather than risking blowing an engine.

Wow. Sounds just like what happened to me. Was driving my 2010 Venza with 140,000 miles, out of no where engine light and oil light popped on. Got out and discovered the oil cooler blew, 6 months passed the warranty/recall as well. Cost me $350 at my Toyota dealer after I screamed at them. Luckily the engine wasn't fried. They won't pay to fix it unless it's broken. There should have been a recall. I can't imagine how many people have spent $4000+ on a new engine because of a simple hose.

I would say that as long as the car has a good service history when you buy it, it should last you at least 250,000 miles minimum GIVEN you keep up with all the necessary maintenance. I wouldn’t be shocked if the car last you past 250,000. I used to work for a lube shop and CONSISTENTLY saw 300,000 plus mile Toyota’s! Hence why I’m also looking Highlander like you! Not all Toyota’s are made the same but this gen of the Highlander is pretty darn solid in my opinion! Hope this helps!

Make sure to check for oil leaks under the car. These cars have issues with the Oil Coolant Lines. In certain years, from 08' to 12', they used rubber hoses, which started leaking. This can destroy the engine, if not caught in time. I just bought a 2012 a couple of weeks ago, but they had already replaced those lines with metal lines. Also make sure the Rear Tailgate door opens properly, if you buy a Limited version with the automatic liftgate. Check and make sure the Drivers window DOESN'T CLICK, when you raise it. If it does, make them loctite the Bolts that secure the window! But after all is said... THIS IS 1 BAD ASS SUV!! It can run for over 300,000 miles, if taken care of!!

Have a 2008 I bought new. Positively the worst POS I have ever owned in 49 years. Sunroof leaks, drivers window fell into door (of course during epic thunderstorm), oil line ruptured, water pump, struts, eats rear breaks and tires, rear window kept opening, radio dead, and at least a dozen other fails. Most occurred 30-50,000 miles. It has made a pretty good mechanic out of me. Mostly because I couldn’t afford to pay someone to fix it. All scheduled maintenance I did way before recommended. I highly suspect the validation of the content, I have been in auto repair industry for 7 years. I have not seen a single knock sensor problem in any of the Toyota 3.5 V6 vehicle, are you sure you are not talking about the 3.0 or 3.3 engine? The VVT one is even more laughable, Toyota cam gear will last longer than any other parts in their car as long as you change the oil ( you can even change the oil every 7-8k mile on these V6 Toyota without worrying you check engine light on with the Crank/Cam correlation code or VVT code) . I wonder where their data point is from. I do however agree on the water pump and ignition coil, but again, which water pump or coil doesn't go bad after 150k.

Good video but most important common problem & SERIOUS PROBLEM then all listed here is the rubber oil pressure lines. If you have 80,000 Miles on this car & haven’t replaced the oil pump that has the rubber lines with the metal lines, you MUST do it NOW at 80,000 Miles. It is the most important of the MOST COMMON 6 FAILURES. When one of these LINES ( part of the pump) goes you will loose ALL YOUR OIL in seconds. That is very serious & something that you do NOT want to have happen to you. Just replace it the moment you read this if you haven’t already or if you purchased it & notice it still has rubber lines, REPLACE IN NOW also. This should have been a recall item from Toyota but they didn’t want to admit to the problem. If you do this yourself buy stud remover sockets & shorten a 12mm wrench & it’s not to a bad fix to replace.

Have a 2008 Highlander with 200,000 miles. Only 1 of these top 5 has gone bad and that was 1 coil. Had to replace a Trans line, Alternator, drivers arm rest pad(twice). Other than those items, just regular maintenance. Has been a great vehicle.

You overlooked a major problem with these v6 engines-the rubber oil cooling pipes get brittle and fail leading to catastrophic engine failure. This should be number one problem on this list.

I've had to replace the water pump once so far. Also had a weird 1-3 second hard vibration come from the torque converter, trans flush will fix that. And at about 212k miles my catalytic converter got plugged, a sawzall and a $10 flex steel tube will fix that. Also burns a good amount of oil... Just my own experience and things to take note of so you don't have to spend days like me trying to diagnose your car

The VVT actuator problem effected me. The pin in the gear failed. It was a $2700 job for me. The car runs great after the repair. I operated the car for 75,000 miles with this known problem (cold start rattle) before taking the car in to get the VVT gear replaced.

@@girl600podcast Not sure if similar to Honda 2008 Accord but mine has rattle when starting, Not cold but after sitting engine off 1.25 hrs minimum to 2hrs after oil has drain completely down. Bought at 104,000 in 2013, now at 192,000 and it still rattles like a diesel engine for split second when starting. So 88,000 miles.

I have an '08. I have had to replace water pump at 80,000 miles and my VVTI line burst at 105,000. Apparently the VVTI line is a super common issue and was fine once replaced with a metal one. Surprised the VVTI oil line issue wasn't in the video since it's a very common issue

2011 Toyota Highlander 2.7L engine. 272K miles. Rattling sounds at low RPM (idling in park or when stopped in gear), not just on start up. No engine lights, no leaks under vehicle. Always synthetic oil regularly changed around 5k miles. What do you think? Research seems to point toward the VVTi gear/cam problem, and/or chain guides/tensioner. Nice video thank you

? My 2012 Toyota Highlander 83k check engine light is staying on. So I took it into Toyota they’re telling me it a code P0368 Camshaft Position Sensor. In which they would have to remove the top of the engine cover to replace. Ok so I ask if that the case can you replace the spark plugs while the cover is off. I was told probably not. So my ? Where is the camshaft Position Sensor B high input Bank 1 located and since they have it taken apart wouldn’t the rear spark plugs be more accessible. Since the 3 rear plugs require you to remove the intake manifold. Please advise as to where this sensor is located and what parts have to be removed to get to it. Thanks

I have a 2013 Toyota Highlander Base LE we are at 190K miles my check engine light came on and trac off light came on. The mechanic said it was some type if censor. They ordered that part and put it in and test drove it three times the lights went off but then came back on and car stopped working. Now they are saying it needs a new engine that the coding is saying the engine is done. He said I have an interference motor so it limits what he can fix. So a new motor and labor will run about 5k

I have a 2008 Toyota Highlander Limited with 155,000 miles and the worst problem we've had is a oxygen sensor go bad. The other problem we've had is the bolt in the auto lift for the back hatch keeps working its way loose. The only other problem we've had is the deer love to run into the side of the SUV. We've only gotten a few tiny dents. Boy the 12 point bucks love to ram their horns along the driver' side. We all have survived.

hondatrix; not sure why you don't want to flush it other than maybe too much pressure or something but you can and should change it. I change mine but I don't use any kind of flushing machine, if there is such a thing. Change it means all of it. Some say they do a change when it's only a partial change and they leave old fluid in. Not sure why but some new fluid is better than no new fluid I guess.
