Omg! Yessss.I am a perfectionist, self taught no one in my family has ever quilted and have found that NO quilt is perfect and I was constantly comparing my stuff to others and felt so inferior. Also use the products you can afford, if you can only afford fabric from Walmart then use it there is no quilt police.

This video is so helpful. I've been watching KZbin quilting videos for a couple of years now. I think it's time to stop trying to follow and manage all of the videos because there isn't enough time to make all the quilts and watch them. I like your channel. I found your channel a few weeks ago, and what I like the most is you always seem so cheerful and helpful! Just what I'm looking for!

Thanks for another great set of tips. I live in a remote part of Western Australia, no quilting buddies, no craft shops, no lessons etc. My teacher is people like you so I thank you enormously for the time you take sharing your knowledge. My light bulb moment from this is accuracy. Of course I knew the importance of cutting and sewing precisely but did I really take it on board, no. So thank you for bringing that to my attention, I resolve to practice my accuracy all the time.
@ISeeStarsQuilting2 жыл бұрын
I'm so glad you found it helpful! As far as accuracy, I don't want you to make yourself crazy over it - but if you take one project that really focus on accuracy and taking your time to get things right... then see how you feel at the end of the project. Some people find that they care less about being perfect and prefer to just jump in and sew because they love it. Others find that the perfection they've been wishing for is worth taking the extra time. 🥰

Another great video with advice for the novices out there. So many videos today stress speed and not accuracy. As a long time quilter I applaud you for saying the things some people don’t want to hear and being encouraging at the same time. Keep it up.

The one thing I still can't stand doing is cutting fabric! I use mainly pre cuts in my quilting for that main reason. I've been sewing/quilting for about 3 years now and I'm only just beginning to get to that "not screwing up as much" stage LOL! All your tips are spot on, thanks so much for sharing!!

I just found your channel recently. I'm enjoying watching your videos. I am an avid crocheter, but recently I've been looking at getting into doing some quilts for a way to give my hands a break with doing a different activity. I think my first quilt(s) will start from jelly rolls. I've made my own clothing in the past (including my wedding dress) so quilting sounds like an ideal choice. Thanks for all your inspiration and tips along the way! Be good, be jolly, and stay beautiful.

I made my first quilt in 1978. No rotary cutters, no plastic templates! I keep that quilt to remind me of how far I’ve come. Whenever I get discouraged, I take it out, have a laugh, and keep going. Some of my favorite quilts are just 5 inch squares. And don’t compare yourself to others! Best advice given here. Oh, and accuracy! Keep it simple and you will know when to move on to harder patterns. Happy quilting!

Great advice. I would also suggest that you watch KZbin channels that have a lot of subscribers. I have seen some teachers that showed nesting seams the wrong way, never join binding or borders on the diagonal, and never square blocks. I've sewn 67 years. Also start small. Don't expect to piece a California King top and quilt like a master quilter. Sew some charms together the quilt them. This increases your confidence.

i love the comment about focusing on like 10-15 people. i just recently did that! i was getting so confused about everything! so i sat back and purged my youtube channels. i looked back and saw who i was saving the most info from and why i was saving it. if it was just for patterns they went, i could get patterns as i needed them anytime. if i only saved 1-2 videos of tutorials out, most likely someone i liked better had the same info anyway. i ended up with 15 channels, but only 10 of them are actual quilting channels. the other 5 are quilting/sewing channels that are helping me to sew better in general. and 1 of the quilting channels is Darlene Marchaud. i have a bit of trouble with perfectionism. and watching her reminds me that it's ok, not to be perfect. especially while i'm learning. That nothing i am making will be showroom quilts, but functional quilts that will be used and abused. lol and that if i REALLY screw something up, my local vet's office will love it just the same, the dogs & cats don't care if the points don't match, my lines aren't straight. or my cuts are a little off. they just care if it's warm. that's where most of my practice/learning quilts are going to go right now. until i get a handle on what i'm doing, that and pillows. haha

Great advice!!! Also, your advice on not having too many teachers, is right on. I was watching more than actually quilting! I have cut down on the number of quilters I watch on KZbin regularly to 6 and am concentrating on learning at my level until I'm ready to be challenged at the next level. The others I watch occasionally, to be inspired, or join QALs. I just subscribed to your channel, because it looks as though you cover early to intermediate enough to really help me on my journey! You got this! Just try to be really picky on 1 project and see how you feel. If it takes the joy out of it for you... don't get fussy with it. If you like how the end result looks and you feel better about it, continue working at it! You can do it! 🤩

Hi Kristen, I’m trying to learn quilting (for the second time) and am struggling with the quarter inch/scant quarter inch concept. Can you weigh in on which to use?
@ISeeStarsQuilting10 ай бұрын
I personally will always follow the quarter inch seam when sewing UNLESS it tells me otherwise. I don't like scant because scant doesn't make me feel confident lol It's a personal preference of mine, but honestly.... if you are consistent and find a mark on your achine or a guideline you can follow so all your pieces are the same, you'll be doing great! It is the consistency that matters more than the actual mesurement.
@notesfromleisa-land2 жыл бұрын
Worth noting that not every demonstrated method is best practice. And best practice is the way that you are comfortable with and enjoy doing that suits your time use and fabric waste tolerances. Be willing to put the time in (and set aside frustration) to develop the visual cues and muscle memory for cutting, , fabric handling , sewing and pressing. Focusing on optimizing your outcomes based on where you are on your learning curve.

I really like the one that has the little edge on it. This is the one I use most often: amzn.to/3lZ1jzx you might have to check to make sure it fits with your machine.
@TheSpiddles2 жыл бұрын
Hi. I have a question about binding. I've tried binding by machine and when I sew it onto the front I find I get a row of stitching beyond where the quater inch seam is on the back, like theres more binding on the front side of the work. Is this how it's supposed to be?
@ISeeStarsQuilting2 жыл бұрын
when you machine stitch binding yes... there is a little bit of an overlap of the fabrics. If this line bothers you or you find its a little wonky or distracting for your design/quilting - I always stitch it on the back first, then roll it over to the front and stitch it down. It will show your stitch line, but I find I often get a cleaner look when I do it this way. I sew really really close to the edge of the fabric. Try it out on a few mug rugs or smaller quilt projects and see how you like it. You could also use a decorative stitch like a blanket stitch to make it seem more "hand done" and on purpose to have the stitching on the front. 😁I hope that helps. let me know if you have more questions

@@ISeeStarsQuilting Indeed! Also it takes chutzpah to say that out loud in an online marketplace full of teachers selling their classes and books and patterns and retreats and whatnot. While that's obviously fabulous, it is soooooo easy for a scared newbie like me to just watch tutorials and plan instead of actually getting some seams stitched down. The online trap of "keep learning and someday I will know enough to be worthy of trying it" is SO REAL and you express the truth so beautifully 😍

Great thoughts. I tell anyone I'm teaching to sew or quilt to not compare their work to mine. I have 46 years sewing experience and 33 years quilting experience. The goal is to learn from me and enjoy what you're doing and you will get better the more you sew. With that said, another thing is to accept your style and tastes. After years of quilting, we got a quilt shop and I joined a guild. My quilts were usually more scrappy and I couldn't really afford quilt shop fabrics. Most of what I saw were very coordinated and planned quilts made with more expensive fabrics. I started feeling inadequate (my own doing). Don't do that to yourself. Enjoy what you do and do your best work.
