@@Karl-Benny It goes up to mach 1.8. Well, officially 1.6, but... Can go mach 1.2 for up to 20 minutes. Anyway, it's ideal cruising speed is mach 0.95, which is not supercruise. Supercruise was axed from the requirements pretty early. It's a tradeoffs thing. What you get for it is a higher bypass engine, with more thrust, cooler airframe, with cooler exhaust, & greater fuel economy. It could've been made to supercruise, but other tradeoffs became more desirable during development. I don't know if the XA-100 engine would allow it to supercruise or not. Or raise it's top speed. The aerodynamics were tailored around a slower airspeed. Only someone with an expensive wind tunnel could venture a guess. The XA-100 would give it greater than 1:1 thrust to weight ratio with full fuel tanks though. And 20% greater range (and it already has exceptional range).

Son of a B. It hit me when I was watching this video why they're using the reflective coating. If you have one of those infrared thermometers that have got really popular over the past couple of years, take it and point it at a really reflective surface ( like a shiny piece of stainless ). It can't get a correct reading. I would bet just about anything that shiny coating they're putting on the planes has something to do with that.

@Typexviiib

I think it has more to do with confusing irst. AFAIK the issues with f35 sustained high speed flight has to do with the afterburner melting the ram coating near the exhaust nozzles, and not the speed itself. Ie, there's no reason to make the whole plane reflective for speed related friction, only the leading edges and areas near exhaust.

The high bypass engine is slick, no intense heat signature either. The bypass air probably has a cooling effect on the combustion exhaust. I wonder if the radar has enough power to "Zorch" at a missile approaching in the front quarter, I know with microwave field intensities high enough you can cook a circuit board with some nice arcs and sparks. Can the radar have a similar effect? Nice anti-drone defence method considering they are usually low cost and unshielded.
@mage3690
@mage3690 Жыл бұрын
It definitely could have that effect, it's mostly a matter of output power. That's how jamming works, it only makes sense to me that if we could boost the emission power far enough, we could cook the missile off. The only issue I can see is that AESA radars aren't really designed to be a force projector in the same way lasers are, mostly due to the fact that the AESA emitters are omnidirectional instead of focused like a laser is. Maybe a form of AESA laser projectors could do something, but then we'd be right back in the Cold War of radars again (i.e. slewing the radar around with a mechanical mount), just with lasers instead of pulse-doppler radar.

Not it out of the sky? Or simply compromise one or more systems, systems with effective redundancies, that may or may not diminish it's overall capabilities. Obviously intricate interconnected systems could potentially cause a snowball effect, despite systems in place to prevent just such a case, assuming those functions fail as well. Any system could be vulnerable to catastrophe from a seemingly minor cause. I'm absolutely not even close to a knowledgeable opinion on the matter, but if I had to guess, I'd think that the massiv6e amount of "bandwidth" between both internal and external systems poses a a more likely threat. Engineers have always championed the idea that if all other consideration is secondary or equal, you should never design something using 10 parts when 9 will do. The irony is that some of the best engineers on earth designed one of the most intricate engineering projects ever.

I know the allies or customers of the U.S. aren't getting the same F-35 that the U.S. will be receiving. I believe Great Britian might be an exception to this rule. Anyone have any ideas what technologies/aspects are most likely different in the different versions? I would think this radar, or certain aspects of it, are one such difference...

What is the latest on the decision about the engine? Will it be an upgraded F135 for the Block 4 version or a future new XA100 or XA101? Will it be decided in 2023?

I think P&W has an upgrade to the F-135 engine that'll be used for block 4 in the meantime until the fully adaptive cycle engines are ready. It adds some adaptive cycle tech to the F-135..I think it's called the EEP program?
@a.fredscullard162
@a.fredscullard162 Жыл бұрын
The name changed of the update in 2022 from the Enhanced Engine Package (EEP) to Engine Core Upgrade (ECU) for the F135 engine. As far as the new adaptive engine, the USAF seems to be the only service pushing for this since the USN & USMC haven't committed let alone any of the partner allies? It would break the USAF budget if they had to bear the cost of development themselves! Have to wonder if this new engine will be saved for the future 6th generation fighter???

The F15EX radar is 30% bigger and higher powered. And the F15EX flies at Mach 2.5 at 50,000 feet. This makes the F35 radar obsolete as a sensor. Every additional F35 produced means 1 less F15EX produced. What a disaster

Either they already know, or we want them to have to spend $ to catch up. We have over 180 F-22’s, the Russians have produced something like 10 or less Su-57’s. We have hundreds of F-35’s, the Chinese copycat “stealth” fighter still struggles to do something as simple as a smooth barrel roll, and isn’t stealthy. I agree with you, let’s not tell them anything, but it’s not the end of the world that they know. When they finally copy our latest technology, it won’t be the latest technology anymore…

This video is mixing up lots of concepts. Think of GaN devices as more power dense and thermally capable devices compared to GaAs for example, but regarding frequency, there shouldn't be an important change at the band that this radar works. Airborne radars like this one have an issue which is that they have to be rather small. Thus, to be able to pack enough gain, they have to stick to higher frequencies, mostly the X band. Going higher in frequency is only going to decrease their performance objectively due to the increased free space and other attenuation losses that come with it. Another issue is the antennas, you might have a great system capable of generating an extremely wide range of frequencies, but as long as your antenna doesn't resonate, you can't radiate them. Airborne radars such as this one normally stick to a single band. Regarding the maximum range and resolution, as long as you can radiate more power you should get more range, but other factors such emitted pulse characteristics will also cap you on the range and allow for different resolutions. Moderns radars have stored a wide library of different pulses with different characteristics which they cycle through. All in all, expect more output power given by the GaN processes, better PRI and pulse compression characteristics, increased EW capabilities and maybe even direct conversion given by more modern ADCs, DACs and FPGAs. But not much change on the array or the antennas themselves, sticking a similar operating frequency.

GaN or ghalium nitride based radar isn't anything new or groundbraking. Even the Turks are building home grown GaN based radars for the F-16 upgrade... 90% of the high end capabilities that the APG-85 brings are classified and will probably remain so. Also the F-35 won't be getting the adaptive cycle engine which is slated to be introduced on the 6th gen fighters like the here mentioned USAF's NGAD and the Navy's FA/XX.
