I'm 74 born and raised in Manly during 1950"s60's 70's it was working class then and the most blissful place to grow up in,I lived around the point from Manly called Fairlight that had the most wonderful tidal pool where I spent most of my juvee years every day after school alas that all changed in the 80's into the latte set moving in and buying up anything that moved

To put it another way, the old saying "Seven miles from Sydney and a thousand miles from care" are very true.

If you catch a ferry home to Manly (or any other suburb served by a ferry), you leave work at the end of the day, and by the time you reach your destination, work and its pressures are far behind, even on the short inner harbour trips. It's so much more relaxing than a bus or even a train.

I used to live in Manly, wicked place. I worked at Hardware & general on the Northern Beaches. Had a incredible time living & working there & I miss it all the time. Hopefully I will visit again one day

Yes, definitely worth going back! I’ve only been away from there for 1.5 years now but already know I’d like to revisit in the future as well.

Another ex NYer here and have been living in the Northern Beaches for 18 yrs, started in Dee Why. If you do settle here do check out the beaches further North like Narrabeen, Mona Vale and Palm, and plenty of smaller ones in between. Better with a car but can be bussed to as well. Now if only the rain would stop, definitely not a typical summer this year.

Hello & thanks!! Yes, have taken day trips up to palm beach & stopped at the other beaches in between!! They all have something unique to enjoy! Thx for your input!! Cheers!

I grew up in Freshwater next door to Manly - but my great grandfather started the Manly Surf Life Saving club in the 1905s (Edward Happy Eyre). Manly has an incredible, inclusive vibe to it - people come there for food, fun and other Fs :) The beaches are to die for and it you like jogging or bush walks there is plenty to do!

I love Manly. I think it is much better than Bondi (but don't tell anyone). I spent my first 12 months in Manly while my parents had a house built in North Manly on Condamine Street. My great grandmother lived in Manly in a house that was still fitted with gas light (though it was no longer used). Great Place. I later went to school in Brookvale and later to Macquarie Uni which opened the year before I went. By this time we were living in Mona Vale (16 km from Manly). Mona Vale and all the other beaches were great too.

@@DontWonderExplore Hi. I believe that Manly got its name when Governor Philip (the first governor of New South Wales) was rowed in a long boat to Manly Cove by British Sailors not long after the settlement had been established around what is now Circular Quay. He and his rowers observed some of the local aboriginal people going about their business. The "locals" were not all that impressed and Philip was hit by a spear but was not badly hurt. He stopped his men from firing on the native men and commented that they were a very "Manly" people. And the name stuck. I am pretty sure there is a stone memorial to this occasion near the ferry wharf on the Northern side. Mike

Happy to help!! If you don’t mind sharing to others you know it might help the channel reach more people with this info!! Any questions lmk!! Truly enjoyed my time in Manly, and there really is a ton to explore in the Northern Beaches as well!! If you have time I’d try living in both Manly and the Eastern Suburbs…different experiences but both good! Cheers.

I live in Manly from 1987 (yes, before you were born) til 2011when i moved to Rabbitoh country. LOVED Manly. Where i am now is also awesome for other reasons. But, i definitely loved the ferry trip to Circular quay where i worked every day. I saw whales, dolphins, penguins.....and all on the trip to work. The big waves passing the heads are also worth the ticket price on the right day :) So many aussies put Sydney down as they think we think we are better than they are. We dont. We just know we have a great little city with benefits that so many others dont. Im proud of Sydney. If other's dont like that... stuff 'em :)

Hi there. I wondering how cold it gets in winter.
@amaslam111
@amaslam111 2 жыл бұрын
In winter the beaches get to 6c at night so mid 40s F. Days tend to be 11-16C so that's 50s to 60F. Mid thickness jackets or layers of sweater and a cap is the most you normally need.

Thx for helping out the community!! And yes i would agree It does get pretty chilly… And that’s comparing it to Northeast Winters in the USA… Obviously without the snow… In Sydney itself

@@DontWonderExplore thanks! I’m from northern NSW and have been curious to how it differed in the colder months.
@DontWonderExplore

Hey there! I’d probably simply check the BOOM weather data on that! I havent lived in Northern NSW so it’s hard to give a 1-1 comparison. And it also depends if your place has heat or insulation and a lot of the older places do not.

Manly is far more laid back than the Eastern Suburbs and much less concrete and more pretty.

Hey! Thanks for the comment, and yes I agree that Manly is more laid back, more family oriented in some ways & so so much more greenery with the headlands alone right next door; one of the reasons I personally loved living there and it seems like for you too!
