What you forgot to mention was the PMP certification is an investment in yourself with a 25% rate of return. It also disguises you from your fellow co workers, who you are competing against for promotions in the company or job applicants. A designation such as a PMP is a way to show you are certified and should be studying continuosly in your field of expertise to become better everyday... A minimum of 35 hours of education every 3 years is nothing

Fourth point is pretty valid. PMP is based on the waterfall project life cycle whereas most IT projects are moving towards Agile project life cycle ...and an CSM or PMI-ACP certification might be more useful.

@@pmclounge Mixing the two project life cycles (water fall and agile) into the same certification viz. PMP does not add any value if you are going to work in a single type of project life cycle. Example: You are in the construction industry and your pursue PMP then the Agile knowledge will not be useful there. If you are involved with creating new products probably the waterfall knowledge may not be useful. If you work in a Hybrid environment probably then only the new PMP makes some sense. Let me know what you think.

You just said if you work in hybrid only then the new PMP makes sense but how can you understand hybrid if you don't know either agile or waterfall? In order to know hybrid you must know both agile and waterfall. That being said, this means PMP is now preparing you for agile, waterfall and hybrid

What I took away from my coworkers about PMP certifications is this " If you are a good Project Manager the PMP will not make you a better Project Manager. If you are a bad Project Manager the PMP will not make you a good Project Manager. It is just a certification, a piece of paper to hang on your wall.
@marosota3950
@marosota3950 4 жыл бұрын
True it is just a certificate, but it is based on best practices on project management. In the process of achieving and passing the exam through the learning materials, you learn the necessary processes and knowledge to make your projects more efficient and effective. So I truly feel if you're a bad project manager, you will become a better one for sure (If you practice what you've learned). Do not think of it as just a piece of paper, the certificate itself doesn't matter much, In the end it's journey that counts, not necessarily the destination. Will be writing my exam in a few days btw👍🏾

Expensive, time consuming, hard .. this applies to all certificates .. like MBA for example. A lot of employees would like to earn money, in order to do that, they need to raise the complexity of their jobs, PMP is a way to raise the complexity and education of a person. Also PMP opens doors, meaning, some clients require whoever will work with them has to have PMP and preferable MBA, you can't wing such requirement! Also when it comes to promoting a person in a department, 90-99% of the time one with the best academic education will win, they will not take you over a guys that is ITIL, Six Sigma, PMP or MBA certified because you are smart. Education has its value and it comes with a price, if it was easy .. everyone would've done it. Nice video btw :) Cheers,

Very True and very enlightning video, you rightly said PMP certified need not be good PM's. I would rather say it is waste of time and the questions asked in exam is irrelevant to what is being studied or in the PMBOK. Also there is no guarantee the answers hidden from users are right, practically we face in the field and tick marked by them might be different. Also no guarantee if you scored above PAR but was failed for 'N' reasons. I strongly recommed all PMP aspirants, you are wasting your time and money. Finally, i would want to ask if all PMP certified are successful in executing their projects I would rather suggest PMI to be more transparent in their approach
@SpinWave
@SpinWave 6 жыл бұрын
The explanations in this video fit the reality very well. The PMI wants to make sure that every PMP maintains its knowledge. It is true that it is a lot of work. Some people may say that if you really want it then you should invest the time and effort. It is also true that there are other method out there. It is also true that you can get the knowledge and not the certification if you become a mebmer of PMI, then you get the PMBOK and then you can even get yourself trained and gain the same knowledge. PMP designations just tells everyone that I HAVE MADE IT!. Do you want to let the world know about it? It is your decision. I would chose to go through all the work to make sure I get the knowledge. I would suggest that the PMI streamlines this process. It is lots and lots of work.

Filling out the application was more time consuming than actually preparing for the exam. It took me months to finalize it because I had in mind the pmp audit. So i only added experience that I can easily verify just in case. However, I was able to save money and time on the PDUs through taking LinkedIn learning courses. LinkedIn gives you one month of free trial. I only studied for one month because I didn’t have enough time on my hands. During this month I took 2 weeks off work, one at the beginning of my study and the last before the exam. So I was studying full time for 2 weeks. Also, I didn’t buy any books. I just used the pmbok pdf version and printed ppt slides found on LinkedIn from a Pmp trainer. So it only costs me a total of 544$ (membership+ exam fees) which’s still damn expensive.

For me PMP certification is just a piece of paper that tells the world that you have cleared an exam. And frankly just going through pmbok and Rita and solving mock questions should give a non certifed PM all the knowledge needed to apply the PMP concepts as needed to his/her current project. The rediculous fees that PMI charges for the exam is just their way to fish money out of our pockets....after all it's an American body which presents simple common sense concepts packaged with unnecessarily complicated word play, so that they can charge crazy fees for the exam. I have cleared the exam and what I feel is needed to clear almost 90 % of the exam is just basic common sense. Once you solve enough number of mock questions you get a sense of the approach and mindset that you need to have to easily clear the exam. Even the mathematical concepts aren't difficult AT ALL. All the people that I spoke to were strangly scared of the course content and viewed the exam as an incredible barrier to overcome....which it DEFINITELY is not.

@@engr.a.d2850 Just saw your comment. You may have already taken the exam....but my above comment still holds. There is nothing that PMP teaches you that you cannot acquire from free sources on the net. PMI just charges for the certificate. Incidentally PMI forces you to take their introductory course.....and gives you some made up PDU's(they call it Professional Development Units). Even if you tell them that you are comfortable directly giving the PMP.... without the need to attend their priliminary course....they will not allow you......that is all that you need to know wrt how these buggers nickel and dime people under the guise of providing "knowledg". What is important from a persons career pov is the knowledge that he can apply to his projects.... NOT a freaking certificate. Just get hold of RITA and some mock questions, go through them, read RITA a couple of times(the book does ramble quite a bit but it's way better than the horrendously written PMBOK) Try and get your organization to pay for the exam(convince them of how you getting the certificate can be a big help to the organization to get more/better projects)

@Alexandru_Iacobescu
@Alexandru_Iacobescu 2 жыл бұрын
@@SSMB-vl4fz Hello. It depends on so many things. I could give you some points but only in my field and in my country. I do interact through the company with different factories in America, China, India and other countries but mainly I can tall you what is the trend in Romanian. Six sigma and Lean is a basic training but it does differ from organization to organization. Usually the big ones creat they're one sistem that integrat the Lean certification or the six sigma/ green belt/ black belt. So this is usually something that you get after you start working at a company and is done in the internal sistem. There are external certification for similar activities but I would not sugest it because it is expensive and depending on the company they will make you redo the internal certification. If you can go at a free or cheap introduction to the tools this is a good thing to have on a CV. An important certificate cation for me was the FMEA. It is used in all automotive industries and it is starting to be asked for in all the other industries by the client auditor. But this is what I see from my point of view. I always worked in factories somewhere between the client and process. But if you work away from the factory or client interaction a certification for a program used in your line of work is more important. The problem is when you start in getting certification that helps with management positions like PMP, networking is more important. I don't like this but in Romanian who you know is more important then what you know. If you want to get jobs like project leader or manager without networking you must have good experience and the certification are like the cherry on top of that.

I agree with point number 5. The problem I have with certs is that if all you have to do is memorize information for an MCQ test, then it does not demonstrate you have the skills. That is why I love IT certs like Cisco Routing and Switching for the CCNP and CCIE levels because you have to do labs in order to attest your skills. If a certification does not require you to perform skillsets, then it is just memorizing information to pass an MCQ test.

Stupidest con list ever... everything worth doing is time-consuming and costs money, but the benefits greatly outweigh the sacrifices. Your potential to get better jobs and higher salaries itself outweigh these reasons. A college education costs an average of $20K and four years and PMP certification cost $1K and a few months. I wonder which one is worth it? My BS college education provided me with salaries ranging from $40-80K and PMP certification allowed me to break through $100K salaries... hmm.... wonder if it's worth it.

So True my friend, I agree with the points you just made. Many years ago I did go through rigorous training for PMP and have worked on Multiple projects however never planned on getting a PMP Certification. In my humble opinion --- 1 it was too expensive, 2 it was time consuming and exhausting, 3 its just one of the methods of getting a job and not really a display of your real knowledge working in projects and lastly we have to keep reading newer versions, maintaining credit hours and the whole nine yards. Eventually you will move to a higher position where this probably would cease to have its existence. But i'm glad some one had the courage to make this video and it will help demystify the myth that PMP is the Ultimate certification without which in the IT industry your worth is not a lot.... Thanks for sharing

I’m studying for my CAPM exam and I wonder if your points are also valid for that. I definitely agree with the PMP unless someone is deadset on obtaining it or it is logical I. Their career journey to have it. Experience trumps over everything. Most certifications are to get your foot in the door at a company. As I’m in freight forwarding, this knowledge doesn’t apply to it’s true nature, but the work itself is the same as handling projects. Just on a smaller more repetitive scale. What are your thoughts for CAPM? How can one figure out if the certification would not be significant or how it can be for themselves? I assume to some it would be beneficial while to others it probably wouldn’t do much if anything for their growth?

@resprotector1147
@resprotector1147 4 жыл бұрын
Hello. As far as I know there are no certifications that specifically deals with delivery managers. However, the PMP or CAPM in addition to Lean Six Sigma certifications would be a great place to start. All of these certifications deal with exactly the same things you are dealing with now. PMP & CAPM deals with managing of projects using resources that comes from investors, stakeholders and guidelines from start to finish with the deliverable as the goal while using the least amount of resources and yet putting out a competitive product. Lean Six Sigma is a method that relies on a collaborative team effort to improve performance by systematically removing waste and reducing variation. The bottom line as a delivery manager, you're looking to make sure the deliverable is the best quality you can produce within guidelines and eliminating waste at the same time. Simply put efficiency and effectiveness. That's my take. My best to you!

Not convincing for not to get PMP. Any certifications requires its own cost and time though the extent varies from certification to certification. Accordingly, the relevance varies with the effort needed. In regards to what you tried to mention that getting certified is not a guarantee to be a good project manager might be true. But the worst manager who is certified with PMP is always better in project management than if he is not certified as he gained the required globally accepted best practice knowledge of project management

Though your points are true in terms of cost and time we need to spend, but it is worth to invest.. here is my understanding of it "PMP learning/certification process and exercises you do will help to better understand the situations by that you can apply more superior response that results in more number of winnings" ; PMP syllabus focuses on 360 degree review of activities we undergo as a project manager, so it is huge and does make sense; at the end the certification alone will not help unless one starts applying the principles learned out of it.. refer PMI Talent Triangle that refers to Technical, Leadership and Strategic Business management skills which helps a project manager.
