In September 2020, Ashley Benefield ran to a neighbor's house in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, and stated she had just shot her husband. Douglas Benefield had several gunshot wounds to his leg, arm, and chest area. Ashley Benefield claims she shot him in self-defense after months of alleged abuse. She was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Ashley Benefield made bail and has been living with family and her daughter since the crime.

Was there ever a paternity test? Her baby was born March 19, 2018, and they only decided to reverse Doug's vasectomy April 2017. Supposedly, Ashley's labor was induced early by 4-6 weeks. OB/GYN's don't induce women to have premature babies, it would be malpractice. Ashley refused to name Doug as the father, or give her daughter his last name. She never let her daughter be alone with Doug. She was on the verge of losing custody of her daughter to Doug, of what may not be his daughter. She took matters into her own hands.
