As a former U.S. Marine, I worked with various types of shotguns. Shotguns are machines, and must be broken in, well maintained and actually used to remain effective. Find the correct load for your application and "shoot your gun"! All too often people buy a defensive weapon , buy a bunch of shells and stick it in a corner. Wrong answer! Shoot your gun, learn your gun, get familiar with its operation and maintenance. A lot of issues come from not knowing the nuances of the gun itself. Reviews are and can be very informative. But, nothing beats actually handling, firing and knowing how to properly put that weapon into use. Don't just buy something because someone else has it. (Especially a home defense weapon) Do your research, make your purchase and Practice, Practice, Practice! You may get only one chance in defending your home. Make sure that you have the right tools or tool to get you through the ordeal. And most of all practice, and rehearse the way you move and deploy that weapon. Mossberg 930SPX is my preferred home defense shotgun loaded with Hornady Critical Defense 00 buck. (1600 fps)

Like others here have said, the Mossberg Maverick model 88 (Security variant)- synthetic FDE stock & slide- with the 20" barrel & 7+1 round tube magazine standard capacity is the most affordable and efficient choice I own. It works like a charm. And obviously there are other versions, barrel lengths, capacity, and one other stock/pump color of this shotgun that are just as desirable.

Im an old man now. I used to hunt with my 12 guage side by side shotgun for decades. I carried a .44 revolver. I still have that shotgun and revolver, and my old Kabar I got in the Pacific islands back in the early 70s. I still hunt squirrels, rabits, and birds. Im in at sunset and do not venture out unless its absolutely necessary. I feel perfectly safe from a burglary/ home invasion . I keep my wrapons in perfect working order and clean. I love my Benelli Nova 550 pump action. That thing has been absolutely amazing and for $425 USD it was well worth it. My other shotgun is a Tokarev Tar 12 semi automatic AR platform design. It works best with 5 round mags although they do make ten and even a twenty round which is large and clumsy and I just think separate 5 rounders are best, but the gun functions perfectly even when it starts to heat up you just have to keep it well oiled like any firearm.

As far as I'm concerned, the best all around shotgun is the Remington 1100. If I ever want to use it again to kill game, I'll install the 24(?) inch barrel, but for years I've only used the 18.5 inch barrel. I also added an 8 round tube on it years ago. I got it in about 1972 and it has NEVER misfired or jammed, not even once. I only use 2 3/4 shells, No. 4 or 7 1/2 for game , or #4 buck or double "O" for anything with less than 4 legs that doesn't have wings. Absolutely, totally reliable: you just have to clean and lube it correctly (there's only one way to do it: correctly) and replace worn parts BEFORE it becomes a problem. Treat your shotgun as you would treat your expensive truck and don't wait for it to break down before getting out your tools. My grandfather told me when I was a wee little one that ALL mechanical devices should last a thousand years IF you take care of it properly. Of course he also told me "Never go swimmin' with bald headed women". Make of that what you will, but sho 'nuff, I never have gone swimming with any bald headed woman. Ever!!!

Grew up with an 870 20 guage. I used that gun for over 50 years till my torn up shoulder wouldn't let me pump it like I used to. My son has it now. He grew up with it, too. Had an 870 12 guage with a slug barrel till I sold it and bought an 1100. Got my dad's 20 guage Browning A5. Two Browning Remintons. Never had a failure of any kind with any of them. The shotgun is the most versatile firearm ever invented. I don't forsee myself in a situation where 5 rounds won't suffice.

I have an old Mossberg 190 Bolt Action. While it isn’t the most ideal gun for home defense. If my math is correct 2+1+16gauge=dead boogieman. Plus if you’re a fan of old fashion American made steel and wood furniture, then you’ll love these old gals. It’s very easy to use as the ergonomics are universal. Even back in the 50s Mossberg was putting the safety and magazine down the center of the gun. It’s only drawback for me is the ammo. 16ga is a little hard to come by, and 2+1. But a sleeve on the stock fixes that issue. And Mossberg designed the barrel to have a C-lect choke added to the barrel. And the barrel itself is ported from the factory already. Not to mention these guns are great if your budget is really tight. I picked mine up for about $150.

After unboxing I thoroughly cleaned it and re-lubed it. I had zero malfunctions during the initial 100 shells. It is the smoothest shooting shotgun I have ever used. You do know it has an adjustable gas system, right? You have to turn the knob to adjust for the shells you are firing although I have found that on setting "2" it cycles everything just fine... slugs, buckshot and 7.5 birdshot.

I also bought a mag fed shotty. The mags were aluminum and followers were poly. When loaded the springs stacked and caused an issue. Part loaded worked well. They touched the bolt carrier when closing which killed the closing speed and caused partial chambering. I had to alter all 8 single stack mags to clear the bolt carrier and they work like magic! I then shortened a spacer in the mag cap and shortened the spring one coil to make 10 rds work well. You can do a lot with metal mags.

Winchester SXP Defender 12 gauge and if you feel like birding, get the longer barrel to change out the shorter home defense barrel. Smooth action and fast. Quick barrel changes, shoots 2-3/4" and 3" loads. 5+1 with 2-3/4" , more with the mini shells.

I don't own a JTS but you can modify the magwell to make it take saiga mags / drums and there are aftermarket upgrades to remove some of the cheaper polymer parts. I've seen a lot of good reviews and I know a few people that have them that love them.. I'd never buy one personally, if I'm going to buy a semi-auto shotgun, it's going to be a Beretta

My JTS MAK12 had no issues cycling rounds except for 2 3/4 birdshot shells. But it is clanky and sketchy, and nomatter where I look for strengthening parts it's always to no avail. I really like it, I just dislike there isn't any real parts for it.

I bought a SAIGA 12 before they were cool, sometime in the mid 2000s. Lol mainly because I owned a SAIGA AK47 I bought a few years earlier. I definitely didn't know what I was getting into, but it's cycles pretty well with a heavy load. Target loads consistently jammed. At this point its more of a collector piece. Did I mention it kicks like a mule.

Yeah, box fed shotguns aren't as practical or tactical as they might seem. You can always shove a few more rounds into a pump action after getting to cover quickly when you have a couple of bandoliers that hold 50 rounds each. Plenty of ammo to feed the beast in a hairy situation.

There is nothing better for home defense than a 12 gauge 00 buck. The retired police range commander of one of America's top three most violent cities told me that, and i had heard that multiple times before. I first shot a gun when i was seven, and i was allowed to shoot a 20 gauge by myself when i was ten.

If you understand gas port settings on semi-auto shotguns, an individual has less problems. First, clean out the shipping grease from the port. Second, use proper ammo with high quality brass and correct powder charge preferably over 1350 fps. Third, use the correct port settings. Four, use factory designed magazines. Five, break in the shotgun with AT LEAST 200+ shells.

Yeah, like I see these KZbinrs do their little burndowns on Turkish guns that clearly state +1300 FPS ammo and high brass only. Then act shocked that it breaks after failing to shoot nuts and bolts. 🤣🤣 I have a Citadel Boss 25 and did cleaned the grease off as you mentioned, cleaned it, and only shoot the recommended ammo for it. No jams ever. How shocking. 😵😵😵

I wish one of the videos for a home defense shotgun would show shotguns that are actually for home defense. Instead they are all about military tactics and shooting at targets a hundred feet away in a field or quarry. And I imagine a home defense situation having to shoot from the hip not at shoulder height.

I'll keep the old 88 thanks. Box mags are a great idea for capacity but the weight and bulk makes them difficult to shoot and move around with. If a box magazine was a useful and piratical option it would have become main stream long ago. unless you're in actual battle you're carrying around ammo you will never need.

I had a Maverick 88 and it was fine in normal use. The only time I saw any problem was at the range when I fired 25 rounds of 00 in rapid order, reloading quickly 5 times. Towards the end of this exercise, the darn thing got so hot the brass of the shell expanded and locked in the chamber and it would not cycle. But then I forgave it, as who would need 20+ rounds of rapid fire and in what possible situation?
