Having played, coached and now scouting, this is a lot of good advise. I tell players that are serious about a sport in high school that they need to practice the appropriate drills and such for that sport 1 - 1 1/2 hours a day 4-5 days a week for a minimum of 6 weeks before a try-out. Once they get to the college level and they focus on a sport, then do these same drills and such year round. I have a friend of my sons that is in the major leagues and he plays catch, long toss, does wind sprints, and batting drills for an hour a day even on his vacation time over Christmas.

The thing I like about my high school is that the tryouts are a full week long of practices so you get 5 days of about 2 hours a day worth of “tryout time”.

Here in Ann Arbor Michigan, school is suspended until April 6th at least. Winter sports are cancelled and it looks like baseball and other spring sports are done as well. I can't even imagine how bad that would hurt. Is Mass really going to keep schools open and have spring sports?

Most HS coaches already know who their team is going to be before tryouts based on prior seasons, summer ball, etc. So, yeah a tryout isn't always fair. It's more a formality. 100 kids trying out for 20 spots seems crazy though
@Idiotsincarshere Жыл бұрын
Recent tryouts for Matt's 13-15U teams was 300+ kids for something like 60 spots I believe.

Matt, you've done videos about overbearing parents, and I see a fair bit just disgraceful behaviour and language from parents at local sporting events. Have you ever had an argument or had to tell a parent to leave a field or practice facility because they got too aggressive.

As someone who ran an adult team for years and conducted a lot of tryouts, I'd say don't try guess what the team wants. Other guys may show more talent, but being someone who is reliable (ie: shows up on time prepared) stands a much better shot at making a team than a guy with all of the talent but can't be trusted any farther than the coaches can spit. Show confidence in yourself as if you've done this before. Do as you're asked. Most important, you can't control what someone else does. You have no control over how well another guy does so don't worry about it. Just focus on what you're doing. I'll finish by saying no one is out to get anyone, no coach "hates" anyone. If you don't make the team it's because the coach(es) didn't feel you were the right fit, it's nothing personal and doesn't mean you're a bad player. If I gave up when someone told me I couldn't play my career would have ended decades sooner than it did.
