Disc herniations in the neck can improve if you take pressure off them. The disc becomes herniated because of the stuck joints and weak muscles near the herniated disc.
Getting strength and mobility in the right areas can help reduce neck pain in the short term and the long term.
Only do exercises and treatments that can give you immediate relief. Avoid doing things that hurt during and right after.
In this video Dr. David shows you the top 5 treatments for pain relief from a neck disc herniation.

These exercises have helped me more in three days than months of PT and chiropractor. No joke. I'm going to send this to my primary physician and the PT I was working with so they can help future patients. As for me, I'm going to save some (a lot) of money and just work these exercises into my daily life, forever.

What makes you think that they want to tell their patients what the best things to do? Most doctors, therapists, etc out there wants thier patient to come back and pay. So they wont tell you the truth. Therefore you don't want to rely on what they told you. Just open youtube and research. Educate yourself. There are the best qualified doctors and therapists like El paso, which will help for real.

I've been dealing with severe pain in my neck due to a hard kettlebells workout since July. I've been to the chiropractor, did months of PT and the pain has persisted. I've now turned to acupuncture and these exercises on this channel and there is finally relief! I also realize that a lot of the exercises I was taught to do (the neck stretching and traps activation) was making the problem worse! Please do these exercises if you have a cervical herniation. Dr. David knows what he is talking about!

We have the same story!! In July I slept on a different pillow and my neck was sore, then worked out and while lifting a weight I felt a tight pull in my neck. Went to chiropractor, did PT, had massages, had xray, things got worse w PT. I finally got an MRI and saw I have 2 herinated discs, one that has ruptured. Started doing these exercises along w decompression and I am finally getting some relief. Praying you heal quickly too.

I don't speak English fluently, so excuse me if you don't understand some of what I said.. I will try.. I don't know how to thank you... and how to express my great gratitude to you. Thank you for making this video, you saved my life.. I watched dozens of videos of neck disc exercises and did some of them, such as stretching and pulling my shoulders back, and the pain became so severe that I did not sleep for more than two hours, and then the pain woke me up while I was crying and walking around the halls of the house waiting for the pain in my back and the intense burning in my shoulders to subside. It has now been 4 months since I suffered a herniated disc in my C5 and C6 vertebrae. At the beginning of the fourth month, I started applying wing exercises and shoulder raises, and I maintained the 20% double chin position for a full month as long as I did not feel pain. I did not expect this result. Really cool. I didn't do all the exercises, I just did the double chin, then shoulder raises and the wings exercise, and I followed your advice to always keep the double chin position even if it was 5% Especially the wing exercise, at first it was very difficult because my shoulders are uncoordinated and my arms are heavy, but with repetition the pain and stiffness decreased, my range of motion increased, my strength improved, and coordination in the shoulders and arms improved. . . Day by day, the muscle spasms in my neck diminished and were no longer as swollen as they were before, and I was able to do daily activities. With less difficulty. I didn't need to go to an orthopedist or a physical therapist. I didn't need sessions or go to my appointments with my doctor. I have patiently endured and applied your exercises very carefully, taking care to stay upright with a double chin, and here I am recovering and I feel that there is little left and I can go back to what I was before. And it's all thanks to you. I hope this video spreads to reach every person suffering from a herniated disc in the neck.

@@epmanualphysicaltherapy thank you so much. I’ve been in two car accidents few years back. MRI said I had few herniated discs in my Neck and back. I’ve been okay since working out. I was doing standing over head press barbell 2.5 months ago and I felt a shooting pain from my head down my left arm. Then next day I was all swollen and when I would move my neck a certain way it would make a nerve electric pain to my left arm. I would also have burning back and tingle left foot. I was so scared. I didn’t know what to do. Saw the pain doctor, got meds and it helped. She told me to do pt and mri. Pt made it worse and I haven’t done the mri yet. She also said I might need injections. Doing your exercises really helped and I’m starting to feel better. Just got back into the gym this week. Do you still think I need to get an mri or injections? When I tilt my Head back my neck muscles would pop a lot. But it’s popping less and the tension is getting a little less now.

Here is what I did and my c5-c7 were almost completely touching with arm weakness, tingling, headaches and 3 herniation's. 1. I stopped all irritating exercise like tennis and static stability holds and bought a saunders home traction unit off ebay. I started it at less than 10 lbs of force and did 2 minutes on and 1 minute off and worked up to 25 minutes 2x a day over the course of several weeks. 2. I then have continued to increase the pressure and tolerance until I was able to pump the unit to around 35-40lbs which gets at the lower discs. Higher pressures are needed to pull those discs apart and rehydrate them. 3. I continue now to increase the pressures until no more benefit is seen which took 2 months and now I am close to maintenance. 4. At 6 week mark I was able to place my hands behind my neck fingers overlaying each other and gently do 50 reps of flexon and extension in very short movements which creates a burning in the back and front of the neck and helps to heal the discs. I do this in the shower every day. 4. Don't let anyone tell you this is a death sentence.

Does this have any contradictions for disk bulge on C6-C7 if you have a military neck as well, I have seen other doctors and chiropractors advise against chin tucks for example in that case, and if the pain is chronic should they be performed at all. I am 8 weeks into the initial pain phase of the neck bulge?

Hi Doctor-I just found your channel and I’m hoping you can help me. I fell down the stairs 15 years ago and have been dealing with herniation at C6-C7 along with severe foraminal stenosis on both sides. About a year ago I started experiencing a new symptom. Whenever I would be sitting in my La-Z-Boy recliner, or one of those new recliners at the movie, theaters, or even sitting on my couch, for more than 20 minutes, when I would stand up, it feels like severe pain on the top of my shoulder. It feels as though something is locked out of place, and I can hardly turn my neck, and it ends up, hurting me severely for the remainder of the day. I feel like something mechanically is getting caught in place or out of place. The weird thing is, while I am sitting in these positions I don’t have any pain at all, it’s only when I get up that the situation occurs. If you could help me as to what you think is going on, it would mean so much because I have watched many of your videos and I’m thinking it’s the first rib? Thank you and I sure hope you respond because this is preventing me from enjoying regular activities like sitting and watching a television show.

I've had great results with your muscle balance approach (working glutes to relieve sciatica) so i'm thinking of sending this video about neck to a friend of mine who is about to go into surgery in July. I'd be worried about her hurting herself doing these exercises. Of course it's her choice whether or not she decides to try. But if she's been battling this neck issue for a year and is now going for surgery, is there Some likelihood that her herniation is really pretty bad and I should just step off?

Hi Jane, Thank you for reaching out about your friend. We are so sorry that to hear that she has been suffering from neck disc herniation. 🥺 It is a very painful experience and you are a wonderful friend for looking after her best interest. These exercises help address the root cause of the herniation and would be beneficial but she must do these exercises at the lowest intensity at first. It should feel good performing the exercises and she shouldn't feel pain afterward. If she does she will need to stop. We appreciate your kind words and your dedication to your friend. janetwocents6938, as I posted on this site, 48 years of working (75% of drivbing 3 hours a day to commute), takes its Toll on you neck. Driving positions are ususally very poor, with Forward head Posture and then hours a day in front of PC - will destroy your neck / posture. I refer you to another YT Channel called Caring Medical with Dr. Ross Hauser in FL. Another is Dr. Alan mandell on YT too. I have lots of spinal issues which started in my Lower back / Hips / Si joints. That has Traversed up the spine over the many decades of issues stemming from a 1" shorter right leg. The shorter leg is a result of a fgractured Femur in 1966 at age 15 , playing HS football. The body works in Physiatry / Balance. One thing is out of whack , the rest of the body reacts !! If the injury had happened when I was in my twenties, the leg might not have been shorter because the Healing leg did not grow over the 4 months of Body casts abd Traction. The shorter leg which was left Unaddressed by the Ortho dr and my parents at that time in 1966, caused Scoliosis and the rest is History.

That is what I wanted to ask you... I have an inflatable traction neck collar, are these things safe? I have severe stenosis and nerve impingement at C6/7, and when I inflate this collar, as it sits on the shoulders I get pain at C6/7, its not nerve pain, but if you can imagine say sacr tissue or ligaments getting stretched and causing pain... a bit like detaching my neck from my body... I am not over inflating, its just when it is addressing the rest of the cervical.spine adequately it hurts down low... is it ok to continue traction like this gradually building up tolerance, or am I doing damage? One thing I did learn with this thing is posture is really important while using it, once I used it and was read in bed while it was on, so my spine wasn't in best alignment and I did something that resulted in tingling in fingers for 3 months until I found a good physio who adjusted my neck in just the right spot and it resolved.. maybe you could do a review on these pump up collars. Would be appreciated, many thanks.

After going through all the hoops to get one through my insurance company because it cost $200, I could not stand where the thing for 10 minutes! Definitely exacerbated pain. I have found better relief from the Saunders traction device that you put on the floor and you lay on it.

I’m having intermittent pain in my upper back on the side when I do chin tucks or have exercises I’ve seen for traction, it aggravates it. I’m paranoid it’s going to extrude because I have a major 95% disc extrusion in my neck and I just don’t want that to happen again. Is it normal for chin tucks to hurt 😢

Hey there, great question! Chin tucks can cause pain if you are not activating the correct muscles during the exercise. It is very important to activate your Deep Neck Flexors (which are right behind your throat, but still in front of your spine). This should give you the feeling of creating a double chin. Hope this helps!

Didn’t I get this neck condition because of so much computer work with head forward? It sounds more logical to roll up a towel and put under my neck while laying on the floor doesn’t it. I’m confused.

I'm so disappointed. I ordered the 28-day program for the knees. It's a great program , but I've emailed and called to see about how to be able to watch through the TV instead of the phone or computer. No response from El Paso. 😢

Hi Goldie, We are so sorry that we haven't gotten to your email or call as of yet. We are a small team and we are currently inundated with thousands of emails and phone calls daily. We try to respond to them as quickly as humanly possible in the order we receive them. In order to watch the program through your TV you would need to hook up your computer to your TV with an HDMI cord. You can also access it if you have a SmartTV and can access the internet through it and pull up the program there. We hope this information was helpful. Please take care!😃
