Coming from a dirt bike racing background (enduro and hare scramble), we all wear hydration packs. A simple fluid only backpack style pack typically carries at least 70 oz. So even the guys that find the space for two bottle cages end up with less water. After wearing a hydration pack for a few days, you no longer notice that it is there. You can also get 90 deg angle mouth bits so that if you want, you can hang the bit in your mouth and drink all you need to while you ride (of course having the bit in your mouth will take some getting used to). Our dirt bike races are also 2 hours plus long for a hare scramble and 4 hours plus for an enduro, so having the greater on-board capacity is a must. Likewise with hand guards, most all of us have them, and usually full wrap. But many hare scramble courses are much tighter than any mountain bike trail that I've been on so far.

I love "hand-guards." They are called bar-ends, the curved inward kind. Confusingly out of fashion. Having more than one hand position is a good thing, and and so is having effective hand and brake lever guards. I still have all my knuckles thanks to bar-ends. Brilliant.

I make my own mtb handguards, mainly just to protect my brakes but they have saved my hand at least twice. Just be wary of your hand sliding through them and breaking your wrist/arm. The plastic ones are only good to keep cold and mud off.

Ime the o chain only really helps with 150mm and over travel bike. But if small bump sensitivity is everything to you then try it out, just make sure your shock is sensitive enough too, with a proformance shock that hasnt been serviced in 300 hours that will hold you back a lot more than your chainring

Wished I was running hand guard a couple of weeks back... hit some mud, bike washed wide, bars clipped tree causing a rapid right hand turn and jamming front brake on resulting in being Ejected OTB... its a shame my index finger decided to be the meat in that Sandwich!!... broken! 😒

Same thing happened to me two days ago except it was a fence, was going at least 20-30mph downhill and didn’t brake soon enough on a turn, I got jacked up bad but nothing broken I’m sure only due to my size, just sprained my middle finger, the biggest down side is I can’t flick anybody off at the moment!😅

I had handguards on my MX bike when I clipped a wire fence pole but I still got my hand sandwiched, multiple fractures and my thumb was technically severed, it took almost a year for mobility to come back and it's still always "cold" anyway they help a lot but velocity is a b*tch

I've been tempted to get a set of Loam Labs Counterpunch. They're not full on hand guards, just bar ends that extend forward and curve in slightly to protect your pinky finger when you're punching a tree. They seem like a good idea maybe.

Yeah, I hate when I'm on a double black and have to pass a dude on a bike 7k more than mine with all brand new top of the line gear and he is walking it down the 2' drops. If you have to walk more than 1 or 2 obstacles on a dh trail then don't ride it.

The issues I had getting one them topeak multitools sent because it had the knife on it was unreal! Wanted a picture of my passport and then only you could accept it at the other end so had to wait in for it and sign for it in the UK! And for something that was just taken off when I got it seems stupid but my Blackburn one exact same process, I wanted to test this so Make sure you get one without the knife or serrated blade stored in the tool more trouble than its worth! Be more trouble getting stopped with it as over 1 inch be carful with carrying these tools take the blade out

For an Enduro I would want bigger wheels unless your doing more flow trails. My 27.5s are barely enough for some of these Colorado trails

​@bluecowairsoft8154 that's how you ride, everybody is different and prefers different wheels to how they ride. Bikes are toys not race cars. My 27.5s and 26s are just fine on Colorado trails since I like to play, if I wanna go fast, I'll hop on the roadbike.

Just been scouring the topeak site for this too. I've got an aluminium strap mount but I'd rather have one made from something with a bit of flex - that thing comes keen on the side of the knee!

Versa Mount? I use them to mount a heavy battery on my small size 13" frame...they rock. I use lots of them though...3 sets on the battery. But I plan to buy even more to mount all sorts of things. They work in other places other than bikes, too. Kinda pricey for what they are, but I ran my diy emtb 40kph offroad and they didnt even budge. My battery is about 8lbs and mounted on top of the top tube using only Topeak Versa Mounts.

Unless a hand guard mounts to the bar at two points (like with a dirtbike hand guard), they’re not going to deflect anything hard like a tree. Might keep cold wind off your knuckles, but that’s about it. The way they’re designed now is a bit of a joke

For jokermtb to say about all they do is keep cold wind off their knuckles and the design is a joke seems a little ignorant. Just as your assumption that I am stating their winning was because of the hand guards. I would never say buy a certain helmet because the winners had it but I would also never assume the only importance of the helmet the winners had was just to keep the air out of their hair.

Ive got a 2.3 fast rolling tyre on the back and a 2.4 dissector on the rear( flat where i live and sometimes i just want to ride my enduro and give the stumpy a break, plus i have more fun on the enduro makes you want to smash off stuff more, somehere that its built for i put dissector maxterra rear assagai maxgrip 2.5 up front

Not necessarily, one of the great aspects of a high pivot bike is a rearward axle path. This means that the bike gets longer rather than shorter at full travel! Makes the bike feel more stable. But you are right when it comes to the small bump sensitivity, high pivots reduce pedal kickback like the Ochain so you will get similar results there!

Sadly the downside of high engagement hubs is the pedal kickback! The Ochain negates them while maintaining the high engagement. So If you want a high engagement hub the Ochain helps with the negatives 🤘

@@gmbnI don't see how the Ochain can help. It'll solve kickback but it's my understanding that it allows crank motion before the power is engaged to the wheel. Totally defeating the point of having a high engagement hub. (Unless it's just used for the buzzy free wheel sound)

@45graham45 it's mainly about consistency, you'll always have the engagement at the same point due to the high poe hub, even if its slightly more sloppy, and you're guaranteed to not get kickback with the ochain. If you have a hub with low poe you can still get nasty kickback but also with an unpredictable engagement point

How are the 29 front wheel good for technical aside from just rolling over everything and losing your turn radius? Thanks alienating a group of riders who prefer playful and nimblness over speed and rolling over everything again! The majority of us ride for fun, not a race! You can stop with the faster bike is better metric as well, the bike you have more fun on is the best!

If your enduro bike needs to have upgraded tires and brakes out of the box, you didn’t buy an enduro bike. Unless you’re a DH or competitive, your enduro steed out of the box should be as capable as you need.

Larger rotors do not in themselves provide 'more power' What they do do, is provide more contact surface to better absorb AND dissipate thermal energy. They are better at staving off heat soak and brake fade. They utilize more potential of the braking system. Of course, larger rotors with stock pads on a mediocre 2-piston caliper will see virtually no benefit to the average rider. It is merely perception at that point.

I love how he's carryin on about CO2 and Tireplugs and Enduro Racing then it cuts to an actual scene from repairs at a race and they are pumping up a tire with a classic hand pump (much more cost effective) and theres a clip of a tire with an Orange TUBE in there, I guess many people still run tubes, I do too, but I just feel Tubeless is a money sink, you have to buy specific rims, tape for the rims, tires, valves, plugs, a plug kit and sealant, alot of sealant, like copious amounts of sealant, as you have to replace it once a year at least, and you have to check your PSI every day you ride because tubeless loses air way easier. If you get a blow out flat, you have to hope you didnt lose your sealant (contaminate the trail) and try to reinflate with a disposable CO2 cartridge, which is a one shot deal, if your rim is slightly messed up the tire might blow off again and then your walking home. Strap a tube to your frame, you get a flat, replace the tube if you dont want to patch it, inflate with a small hand pump that you can use infinite times, done. I really dont understand the hype around Tubeless, I rarely get flats and if I do I just swap tubes and repair the old one when i get home. Theres a few things in Mountain biking that almost seemed like their designed to just eat money. Sure with tubeless you get to use a lower PSI so your tire grips slightly better, but you'll also be risking get a blow out much easier, which can damage the rim, heck it can cause a serious crash depending when the blowout occurs, both events result in not being able to repair it on the trail. Also those orange tubes look like Tubolito, which offer more strength than a normal tube at vastly reduced weight, and rotating weight is huge in how a bike handles, I'm guessing a Tubolito setup is lighter than tubeless, more resilient, and a much faster and easier repair, just carry spare tubes, which strap to your frame pretty easily.

But try flying down a single track trail with your car, and I have a dirt bike too but I ride my mtb more. Ohv trails are twice as far from my house and the mtb just feels so much more free without 20lbs of dirt bike armor. Also I can bring my mtb and ride street spots when I'm waiting for the shop to balance my truck tires or whatever else
