To all of you (new) programmers feeling depressed after watching this video and those amazing websites. Don't forget that: 1) these were made by teams of front-end devs, backend devs, UX researchers, UI Designers and so on, not just one person. 2) Every expert started out as a rookie. 3) Practice makes perfect. You'll get there one day; keep it up 😃💪 Edit: Wow!! Thanks you all for the love!

He once said he knows how to code, like if he had to code, but his thing now is Webflow. That means he's got the clients, he knows design but he can't go big on development. Besides to be fair, some of this projects require a whole team of really good people at their job

@@NotesNNotes Design and accessibility make or break branding and conversion, which is what makes the money, which is what pays the backend guys as much as everyone else. I'm learning full stack, and its easy to see it doesn't matter how much backend you know, it doesn't mean shit if you don't have a great, attractive, intuitive layout. Your backend can even be kinda shitty tbh and people will still use it.

The Amanda Braga site is great. That little postering effect at the bottom of the screen as it scrolls is clever. After investigating, it's got 2 overlapping divs with the same scroll effect (translateY is changing, it's not actually scrolling the browser). Then the overlapping div (taking up the bottom 5% maybe of the screen) uses a 3d rotate to flip it up as it scrolls down. Super clever. Love it!

2:10 I think they make the sign-up form as a carousel because it makes you curious to see the partly hidden text. You have the urge to click it just to see the text but at the same time you're actually making an affordance that may compel you to commit to the CTA. 3:40 WebGL, a JS API based on OpenGL 3D. 9:15 It's not fun to read long paragraphs center-aligned.

A lot of designers tend to go overly "Flashy" with their "creativity" and the usability suffers, need to find a good balance. I was actually happy that Flash ended and all the overly animated slow loading sites went away with it, but now with HTML5 etc these sites are coming back (argh...), I am not totally against flashy sites, there are time and place for it, like a movie promotional site or something like that, for a company website you don't need to animate EVERY single line of text in just because you can.

However, will not impress a designer even, who is true to their craft. Creativity= Great Job. Business goals/revenue = ?? I highly doubt.

It depends on who the user is and the audience for it. These sites aren't meant to be functional and practical. They're meant to be artistic. They help build a brand and they send a specific message.

These seem... over-indulgent. The last one especially would have been a more effective site without all of the nonsense effects. It’s bad UX design to create a website that crashes the browser of any computer that doesn’t have a dedicated graphics card.

This video was so fun to watch. Really amazed by the great thunberg website. Developers really pulled off awesome creativity in that. It sucks that developers who do such groundbreaking work are never known and a teenager reading scripts from a page is nominated noble peace. Not that she's not doing a good job but she's getting 1000x more recognition for doing nothing and to think of it she has such a bombass website to her name.

A missing piece in these critiques is the websites' effectiveness in achieving desired outcomes. You can spend $100k on javascript animations that look pretty, but your outcomes don't increase. I would be incredibly interested in website critiques like this, but from the perspective of how web design improves outcomes.

Lots of cool stuff, but can you address the accessibility angle please? It would be great to see how they fair through a JAWS reader or when interpreted by people who colorblind, dyslexic, neurodivergent, etc. The "sugar" seems to have pushed UX so far in the direction of "can" that nobody bothers to ask the "should" questions anymore.
