Re: the Do-335 Pfeil The one surviving Do-335 is, as the vid says, on display at the National Air & Space Museum. It took many years to restore this aircraft to its current condition. After its capture by the Americans in 1945, the plane was transported by ship to the United States for technical evaluation. Since it was a conventional piston plane the main point of interest was the ejection seat. The plane was partially disassembled during evaluation and study and was not re-assembled until it was acquired by the museum in the 1970s. During the restoration process, the conservators discovered that the detonation charges and explosive bolts intended to blast away the rear prop and the upper rudder assembly in the event of a bailout situation were still in place and armed almost thirty years after the aircraft was built.

I came down to the comment section specifically to make sure someone had mentioned the exploding bolts. Though it wasn't the conservators at NASM who found that they were still there - in the 70's, the plane was sent back to Dornier to complete restoration by the same people who had built it thirty years earlier. Apparently, they had been joking saying, "Wouldn't it be funny if we found the explosive bolts still in..." and then realized it wasn't such a joke. (Or so the docents told me)

Good video. One minor point - turning the Me 321 into the Me 323 by adding six engines didn't "solve" the problem with it. The engines, plus their fuel, added weight, which severely reduced the cargo capacity. Although the lifting power of the Me321 remained considerable, it could not carry out the prime function of the Me 321 - which was designed to airlift tanks. Between them, the two aircraft represented a design dead-end.
@wolf310ii7 жыл бұрын
Adding 6 engines solve the problem. The Me 321 was build for Operation Seelöwe, after the Operation was canceled, there was no more need to carry tanks. With the 6 engines alone, the cargo was reduce to 11t, but with the help of the RATO or a He111Z the Me323 could take of with 22t cargo

T1mb3r Thats because sekrit dukumentz say so comerade))))))))))
@sd501st57 жыл бұрын
I hope you aren't expecting a propeller plane to get up to 700 kph at sea level... because that's simply not possible, not in the thick air at low altitude... you've got to get to higher altitudes to reach the given top speeds for every single piston engined, propeller driven plane. Fully upgraded, and at around 6-7km altitude, none of the Do 335's in the game have any problem getting up to 700 kph and higher in a straight line. Takes a few minutes if you do it by just flying straight of course, but you can always expedite that by climbing a bit more and then going into a shallow dive, leveling out once you reach your top speed. Note also, these values are True Airspeed (TAS, simply SPD in the game), not Indicated Airspeed(IAS). Handling wise, it's not that bad actually... rolls great at all speeds, rudder is a bit stiff but oh well. The elevator is actually really strong and can put the plane in some high G turns, but then comes the only really irritating part about the planes handling... the elevator might be strong, but it's responsiveness is... well, it feels like it's asleep. It takes about a second for it to really react, which is why getting guns on target is somewhat difficult. -_- I've got to test the Do 335 on full realistic with joystick/throttle/rudder pedals some time... it could be that the instructor is messing up on that flight model, like it did on so many others in the past before they got adjusted.

I had never heard of the Arrow, so thanks for that. I am told that much of the drag on an aircraft comes from the vortices shed from the wingtip, so people tried circular and hoop shaped wings to try and make 'a wig without a wingtip'. The Donier 335... What a beautiful machine. I would have loved to have flown it. No doubt a docile handling aircraft with counter-rotating props and a wing-form that allowed good low-speed characteristics and high maneuverability - not to mention a very good looker!

My grandfather owned a Cessna Super Skymaster named Push-Pull and joked that those planes were the poor man's P-38. One time I replied that it was more of a de-fanged Dornier 335 than a Lightning. He looked at me and smiled a cunning smile, stroked his beard and said but one word: "Interesting." He later told my grandmother that this was the day I became a man. I miss his odd sense of humor even more than I miss flying round in the Cessna.

The Super Skymaster was a development of the original Skymaster, which had fixed undercarriage. Many original models were converted with Cessna-made kits to retractable undercarriage.

Fabian Meisner Atleast the Do335 B-2 is really good(in RB) if you know how to use it. In the first phase of a match I load AA belts and no bombs and climb to intercept bombers. Thanks to the great speed I am usually the first to engage any bomber and the trio of 103s makes it a quick job to down almost anything. One the thread of bombers has passed or I ran out of ammo, I change for a groundpounding loadout and, well, groundpound, again with the 103s shining in their role. This strategy +booster has basically become my primary source of income in WT. Oh and also sometimes you can trick a fighter to a head on, in wich they usually either die or loose too much speed from the turn to catch me afterwards.

P.S. although I understood what you meant at 17:35 ish about it being able to carry five one hundred kilogram bombs within its Bombays, the way you worded it/strung that sentence together may cause a lot of people a fair amount of confusion. was gonna say you could make an annotation, but, youtube in all their infinite wisdom has done away with the annotations feature as well as my personal favourite, showing all your comments on a video regardless of date so you don't spend hours looking for them. lmfao awesome video though man, thoroughly enjoyed the little bit of it I could watch before having to go back to working with my dad.

13:10 Important info of No. 2 plane: It is actually inspired from ancient Indian design of planes which were shown in diagram in various Indian ancient books. Even Germans had visited the temple where this similar design is there, also many books of India written in Sanskrit were translated, firstly by Germans in German then into English. So, they bought books and design there which have influence on Nazi planes

This is so freaking German: Lets slap two bombers together to create a giant unpractical monstrosity to help tow our giant fragile glider... Much better use of our limited resources than building a cargo plane. High engineering, low common sense.
@michaelt.56725 жыл бұрын
Actually, linking two bombers that you have a lot of experience with may be a lot easier than configuring an entirely new plane. It's no coincedence twin hulled aircraft popped up on all sides, it's a decent stop-gap measure.

That's the kind of shit that happens when your leader is a narcissistic psycho who also just so happened to be hooked on barbiturates, cocaine and amphetamines. In short, he was a mad-man who was zonked-out pretty much 24/7. His doctor was giving him all of that shit as "remedies", much like a snake-oil salesman would. I have a feeling that it was to make him more "pliable" for people like Herman Goring and Heinrich Himmler. I'm of the opinion that they kept him hooked on drugs so that they could be the true power behind the Third Reich, but then it back-fired, and he became so dangerously insane that they couldn't control him anymore, resulting in the disaster that befell Germany during and after the war. Ever heard of a "Post-Turtle?" You know three things when you see a turtle stuck up on the top of a fence-post: You know he didn't get up there himself, you know someone put him up to it, and you know that he can't do anything while he's up there. Just look at people like Bush Jr. . That's a Post-Turtle if I ever saw one, and Hitler had *tons* of help on his rise to "power". He couldn't have done it all by himself. Hitler was like a Post-Turtle who went bat-shit, jumped off the post and started killing everyone lol. By the end of it, I'm sure Goehring and Himmler were probably shitting themselves at the possibility of Hitler having them executed for looking at him the wrong way or stepping on his shadow lol.

The Ohkas on display are mostly the training gliders rather than the actual flying bombs (wooden construction for trainers and metal for operational models) the trainers were meant to be used more than once and had landing skids and the operational models were supposed to be suicide aircraft and used only once and the Fiesler 103 R (Reichenberg) was similarly built.

Always loved the Do 335, and I often wondered why such a simple design solution didn't occur earlier. BTW the 635 double-fuselage should have been designated Do 670 ;)
@aurigo_tech2 жыл бұрын
Actually the engineers working on the 335 had to solve 2 hard problems: eliminating vibration issues due to the long driveshaft to the rear propeller and second, eliminating engine overheating issues for the rear engine. They managed to, but it wasn't so easy which is probably why such a design was not made earlier. Also Dornier already had a lot of experience with push-pull configurations, while most other manufacturers didn't.

A few random comments. A very good video, BTW. I don't think I've ever seen any of that footage of the Arrow before, and always thought that this aircraft was a failed design due to handling difficulties. You learn something every day. The Grumman F8F Bearcat also had problems with high engine torque. Grumman engineers took the largest, most powerful radial engine available, over 2,000 hp, and crammed it into the smallest fuselage that could hold it. Even experienced pilots had to be strongly warned about it, or they risked rolling over and crashing when going to full throttle for takeoff. The ME 109 had a strong tendency to swing to one side on takeoff, but I think this had more to do with the narrow landing gear track than engine torque. Nevertheless, a very large percentage of the 34,000+ built were written off in takeoff and landing accidents. This contributed to the perception that the Me 109 was a difficult aircraft to master, while some of the top German aces preferred the 109 to the FW 190, even though the 190 was superior in some respects. The Bearcat is frequently cited as the epitome of piston-propeller-single engine performance, that it would be difficult even with modern technology to squeeze significantly more performance out of that platform. Jets replaced the Bearcats. Regarding the ME 262 Swallow. In 1943, Hitler ordered the cancellation of any new arms project that could not be fielded within six months. This included the 262. If someone, anyone, including designer Willy Messerschmitt, had thought to mention to Hitler that a jet engine burns relatively low-grade fuel, basically kerosene, and not the highly refined, high octane gasoline needed by internal combustion engines, he might have relented, oil and gasoline rapidly become a rare commodity in the Third Reich. Officially, the Me-262 program was halted. Unofficially, Messerschmitt defied Hitler's order and continued development, albeit at a reduced rate of progress. When Hitler finally saw the successful prototype, he was very impressed, but ordered the plane be developed as a bomber! (Adolf Galland (I think) remarked in frustration that "Even a child can see this is not a bomber, but a fighter.") A few more months were wasted in redesign, resulting in the 262 being able to carry a single, externally mounted, thousand pound bomb. Although occasionally used as a ground attack aircraft, the ME 262 was still a fighter, and Germany needed fighters, not bombers, to counter the Allied bombing of German industry. Because of idiocy at the highest levels, production and fielding of the ME 262 was delayed for nine months, a time during which it COULD have had a major effect on the Allied bombing campaign. I think Mr. Haigs understated the danger of using 3 Me 110s to haul the "Gigant" glider into the air. This triad arrangement failed nearly every time it was attempted, each time resulting in the deaths of all three 110 pilots. It's amazing to me that talented and valuable test pilots volunteered for this duty, which was almost as suicidal as the piloted V-1 Flying Bomb. Just my opinion. Still loved the video a lot. Everything about it is well done.
