According to my understanding Disney sequels weren't even made to be good, but instead to train a new set of animators while grabbing some money in the process? It's really nice to see that some absolute gems came out of that

Peter Pan himself was much nicer in Return to Neverland than he was in the original. In the first movie, he was all about having fun & never noticed when others were physically or emotionally hurt by his antics. But he was much more empathetic towards Jane, perhaps because he still had feelings for Wendy. And he never yelled at Jane for not being Wendy - he accepted Jane as her own person. That’s more mature than most adults.

PhantomStrider It's just that Peter always had a bit of a shallow opinion towards grown-ups. Thinking that they change completely, and they forget about the most funnest and nicest memories they had when they were children. And Peter felt that was exactly what was going to happen to Wendy, meaning that he thinks Wendy will forget about him. Which is why he wanted to bring Wendy to Neverland. So she would never forget about him. But now, it's very heartwarming for Peter that Wendy has never forgotten him. Which is why that scene leaves such an impact.

Fun Fact: Rescuers Down Under was made by mainstream Disney. The vast majority of these were made by Disneytoon Studios, famous for awful sequels, but it was the only sequel Disney made before Disneytoon opened, so it got full attention by the best animators and writers. Lucky for it!

What I appreciate about "Return to Neverland" is that WW2 is treated with respect, especially it's effect it can have on kids. Jane is relatable as a character, especially to those who have had their dads or brothers go off to war, not knowing if they'll come back alive. It's amazing that this movie got so much effort and such a budget.

Personally my most hated Disney sequel is Pocahontas 2. I know the original story is fake history and kinda contrived and dumb but it was visually stunning and so beautiful to watch (plus day music). The sequel managed to do everything in its power to dump on everything that made the original so good x.x
@spooperton4535
@spooperton4535 6 жыл бұрын
fluffylovey fun fact about the original Pocahontas is that when John Smith came back from his travels all over, he would always tell stories about foreign women falling in love with him. One of those being Pocahontas! So for a while the story of Pocahontas was true to most people (other than those who traveled with him). What I enjoy about Pocahontas 2 is that it tries to fix the originals historical inaccuracies and puts her with John Ralfe, who she marries to make relations with indians better and learn more about european life. But also how much of a douche John Smith was in real life (thinking selfishly at the end), he was quite a charmer..

Bambi 2 will always be the absolute best to me - but regarding The Little Mermaid 2. It makes sense that Ariel would mature after what she's been through since it was her ignorance that nearly led to the destruction of her home under the sea. Parents who were rash and bull-headed in their youth are usually the ones who will warn their kids against certain activities. This could've been a very convincing change for Ariel had there been an actual "real." threat and good dialogue.

I'm sure they probably did have kids eventually, I just wish they showed us what it was like. It's true that Ariel changed in the second movie but you have to keep in mind that she was young in the first. People change when they get older, especially if they have kids. You can't always be adventurous when you have a child to look after. Besides, if you did dangerous things when you were younger, would you let your kids do the same? I do plenty of things that I'll never let my future kids do lol.

Man, The Lost Boys are adapted in the original novel with them being killed Peter Pan with a knife was just too extreme for a kid-friendly Disney movie. But at the end, Jane played with Peter Pan and he broke his heart after he found out that Wendy was married and grown up. But I'm sure in Peter Pan 2: Return To Neverland that at the end, Peter and Wendy reunited after the movie.

That was my favorite scene when I was a child. Not because I hated Tinker. I loved her, but there was something about that scene that I really loved as fucked up as it sounds. Probably with how well it was handled. Like you could see in Tinkers expressions as she was getting weaker that she knew she was going to die, but she did not want to die. She was fearing for her life. That scene really got to me as a kid.

The saddest Disney moments in my opinion are Kenai telling Koda his mother wasn't coming back because he killed her (Brother Bear), the opening of Bambi 2, Lilo and Stitch when Stitch breaks down about being lost, and all 80 something mintutes of The Hunchback, and The Tigger Movie is freaking depressing as hell.

Haters of Mulan (1998) that like to make it sound too flawed to be considered amazing so they can make both the sequel and the remake sound a lot more like overhated gems by comparison are cyberbullies (re: the toxic side of the comment section of m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXbPZ5aOd8Sln6M that don’t acknowledge why they should have instead griped that Pooh’s Grand Adventure, even by Disney Renaissance standards, is too brilliant to land on this list since as Pooh fanatics, it is the greatest DTS film since A Goofy Movie).

21:34 they could have done a basic fanfiction "lost brother" and it would have worked better. Because maybe the brother ran away and got turned into a beast or something by the enchantress, who went to check his house to see if the rest of his family are worth saving. We could actually see the animation of her going to beasts' house and meeting him, showing us that she was actually the villian all along like in matpat's theory. The beast goes to find his brother after turning human. And the movie is better. Sure, its like a fanfic. But it is one since i just made it up.

The reason that Fantasia 2000 and Rescuers Down Under are such high quality is because they are the only 3 that were actually released in theaters, giving them infinite more of a budget than the rest of the sequels, that are all straight to VHS/DVD

They were also made by Disney's main unit, while the rest of the sequels were done by their side unit Disneytoons Studios, besides the 2011 Pooh movie. Though some of the Disneytoons sequels like Bambi II and The Tigger Movie were released in theatres in certain countries.

Bambi 2 is amazing, I loved it as much as Bambi. Peter Pan 2 was, for me, better than the 1st. For some reason, in the first film, Peter seemed a little bit of a jerk (I should rewatch it to have a better opinion, but that's the idea I have) and Jane was a more complex character for me than Wendy. Peter Pan 2 has more depth.

I have to say this... I have not bin a fan of 3D animation... I don't hate 3D animation... Wreck It Ralph, Tangled hell all of the Pixar movies would work in 2D... But for the very first time i fell in love with a 3D animated movie... Zootopia Is The Best Looking movie and is the first one to deserve being in 3D animation... You may not like it but 3D animation is here to stay... Moana may have worked in 2D but that 3D water effect no way that would have looked as good in 2D... If you can't look past animation then i feel bad for you... The Animation is just one part of it... The stories and characters are just as important... If your just looking at the animation... Thin you are just getting a quarter of the movie... And if you are avoiding the movies because they are 3D animation then you are missing out big time... Zootopia needs a Sequel... And I'd like to see Moana get one too.

I'm not really a fan of 3D either. But I was planning to be as animator for Pixars someday or creating my own show. But I do believe that CGI nowadays are just bleak, exception for Pixars and Dreamworks as well as Illumination Studios. Sequels can be bad sometimes only if you messed up the plots and originalities.

Hunchback II doesn't even look like the same universe as the first one. If they had to make a Hunchback II, they should have done a midquel about a younger Quasimodo trying to venture out, making one friend but eventually, Frollo finds out he's been sneaking out and he never sees that friend again. It would end with the gargoyles coming to life and becoming his new friends (possible hallucination implied for the adults watching), giving him a happy ending. It would still be stupid, but it might work.

The Rescuers Down Under was one of my favorite movies growing up. In fact, I didn’t even know it was a sequel until some years later when I watched the original movie. I prefer Down Under over the original any day of the week. The best part about it was casting John Candy as Wilbur. He stole the show and made the movie even better. The golden eagle flying scenes were spectacular too. I agree 100% that it’s a totally underrated movie and should’ve gotten more respect than it did. Apparently, it was a box office failure. I don’t see why. I thought it was really good. And I wish there could’ve been a third one.

Yeah, let's face it. People like me have a very rough history with Princess Ariel because in The Little Mermaid 1, she never developed from being ungrateful, selfish and a female stereotype in general. No wonder The Little Mermaid II would be horribly executed, but there is more reasons why such as PhantomStrider's points to why The Little Mermaid II: The Return to the Sea is another example of how charmless a sequel made by DisneyToon Studios can really be while the film's on this list of greatest Disney animated sequels are total exclusions). However, apart from its stereotypes, The Little Mermaid (1989) is actually partially well-made because of what the animators could do although it is a film released in the late '80s, actually beautiful songs by Alan Menken and specially badass villain Ursula.
@TennantJunkie1993
@TennantJunkie1993 6 жыл бұрын
Kieran Stark Okay, Ariel wasn't ungrateful. She just wanted to discover a world outside the ocean. TRITON was the SELFISH ONE! He destroyed her trinket collection to teach her a lesson and in doing so pushed Ariel to lose her voice until the end of the movie.
@kieranstark7213
@kieranstark7213 6 жыл бұрын
Oh, Triton too pissed me off in The Little Mermaid because of what you just described he has! But HE was the one that actually developed his attitude by having a MUCH more controlled temper. Princess Ariel could have journeyed King Triton to the human world so that they could give it a chance to see if it is that bad like in the near past or not. That's one of the many reasons I would be honored to remake (and/or parodize Walt Disney Animation Studio's The Little Mermaid) besides the fact that no matter how much she would want to be at or at least check out the human world, she could at least be grateful of the sea realm she is at. After all, it has magic! I know you disagree that Ariel is ungrateful, but I elaborated on why I respectfully disagree with you and find my opinion to be objective and try to be as respectful about it as possible.

Rescuers Down Under was made by the studio's TV department in Australia, the same studio that also produced all the shows and was later asked to do the sequels. If you watch the order these sequels came out in parallel to what TV shows were coming out at the time you will probably see the quality dip around the same time. You have probably also noticed that most of these "movies" are failed TV pilots recut into movies. Thinking especially of Belle's Enchanted Christmas, Tarzan & Jane, and Atlantis: Milo Returns.

I'd have to put Rescuers Down Under at #1 personally. I saw it in the theater when I was about 7, and it was just incredible on the big screen. It was also really one of the first times I saw cgi integrated into traditional animation like that and looking back now, 30 years later, i have to think that it may have been an influence on my love of animation as an art form. Also, Joanna the Goanna doesn't get nearly enough love as a villain's sidekick.

I don't like Lion King 1 1/2's irreverent tone towards the original. Really, that scene where the reason why all the animals kneel is revealed to be because of Pumbaa farting was just too much. It's not bad, but I greatly prefer Lion King 2. I actually haven't watched many of these Disney sequels myself. So I'll say that Lion King 2 is my favorite sequel. And Hunchback of Notre Dame 2 is the worst one I've watched, for sure.

I first saw Kronk's new groove when I was about 9, I think? And I loved it! I still really like it. It's definetly not as good as the original, the original is basically an unpassable film. But the second one still had some great jokes, but just a bit less effort put in. If youre in the mood, and know its definetly not gonna be the best, you can really enjoy this film.

I had never seen return to neverland, so i decided to check it out. I CRIED 6 TIMES!!! the first half of the movie is really dark and sad, there's war, jane's emotions throughout the film, and several moments where you just can't forget that through the whole adventure there is a war going on, that jane is away from her family through very hard times. The scene at the end especially got me when peter ended up seeing wendy again after all these years. There was just something very heartwarming about peter meeting her again. Thanks for recommending this to me! :)

Honestly, Peter Pan II and Lion King 2 really feel like a hearty meal of a movie. I love them both SO much, I LOVE Peter Pan, and as a cosplayer, I have always wanted to get his character (working on it!) and I relate to him on a personal level. He's snarky, childish, and a little selfish. The ambient music was gorgeous, as you said. I ADORE Jane! The setting of WWII is lovely too, we finally get a movie with children (That isn't The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas) based in that time that gives us insight on how it affects the characters. How Jane sometimes doesn't act like a child. But there is still the childish heart of it, when I hear "Quick, Nana two!" My heart warms. Jane has obviously heard stories of her mama's and uncles dog, as not even Wendy would name a dog that, and named her Nana II And this, Lion King 2, the one you may not agree with, I think it's amazing. Zira's villain song I can recite by heart whereas with Scars I every so often just end up going 'mmhhphfllll' because the song is composed in a way where I get the lyrics mixed up, Zira's song holds a lot of weight to it and gives my brain marks in the animation I can link to where I'm supposed to be, such as the tail-stepping scene, the breaking through the dirt etc. Though I love Scar and the original movie but Be Prepared (I shit you not I had to look it up to recall the name) just felt like they were flexing their budget. I mean, even their chemistry seems a lot more fleshed out and I can sing all of the songs. I can't do that with the original. I wish there was more merch for both sequels.
