Peter Pan himself was much nicer in Return to Neverland than he was in the original. In the first movie, he was all about having fun & never noticed when others were physically or emotionally hurt by his antics. But he was much more empathetic towards Jane, perhaps because he still had feelings for Wendy. And he never yelled at Jane for not being Wendy - he accepted Jane as her own person. That’s more mature than most adults.
@phantomstrider6 жыл бұрын
That's very true. I disliked Peter in the original pretty vehemently. But he was much more pleasant in the sequel

Bambi 2 will always be the absolute best to me - but regarding The Little Mermaid 2. It makes sense that Ariel would mature after what she's been through since it was her ignorance that nearly led to the destruction of her home under the sea. Parents who were rash and bull-headed in their youth are usually the ones who will warn their kids against certain activities. This could've been a very convincing change for Ariel had there been an actual "real." threat and good dialogue.

Personally my most hated Disney sequel is Pocahontas 2. I know the original story is fake history and kinda contrived and dumb but it was visually stunning and so beautiful to watch (plus day music). The sequel managed to do everything in its power to dump on everything that made the original so good x.x
@spooperton45356 жыл бұрын
fluffylovey fun fact about the original Pocahontas is that when John Smith came back from his travels all over, he would always tell stories about foreign women falling in love with him. One of those being Pocahontas! So for a while the story of Pocahontas was true to most people (other than those who traveled with him). What I enjoy about Pocahontas 2 is that it tries to fix the originals historical inaccuracies and puts her with John Ralfe, who she marries to make relations with indians better and learn more about european life. But also how much of a douche John Smith was in real life (thinking selfishly at the end), he was quite a charmer..

I loved how even Lion King 1 1/2 kept up with the Shakespeare theme. It’s all one big reference to a parody play called “Rosencratz and Gildenstern are Dead”, centered on two EXTREMELY minor characters in Hamlet and their reactions to all of the events of “Hamlet”.

PhantomStrider It's just that Peter always had a bit of a shallow opinion towards grown-ups. Thinking that they change completely, and they forget about the most funnest and nicest memories they had when they were children. And Peter felt that was exactly what was going to happen to Wendy, meaning that he thinks Wendy will forget about him. Which is why he wanted to bring Wendy to Neverland. So she would never forget about him. But now, it's very heartwarming for Peter that Wendy has never forgotten him. Which is why that scene leaves such an impact.

It's true that Ariel changed in the second movie but you have to keep in mind that she was young in the first. People change when they get older, especially if they have kids. You can't always be adventurous when you have a child to look after. Besides, if you did dangerous things when you were younger, would you let your kids do the same? She was fearing for her life. That scene really got to me as a kid.

The saddest Disney moments in my opinion are Kenai telling Koda his mother wasn't coming back because he killed her (Brother Bear), the opening of Bambi 2, Lilo and Stitch when Stitch breaks down about being lost, and all 80 something mintutes of The Hunchback, and The Tigger Movie is freaking depressing as hell.

I have to say this... I have not bin a fan of 3D animation... I don't hate 3D animation... Wreck It Ralph, Tangled hell all of the Pixar movies would work in 2D... But for the very first time i fell in love with a 3D animated movie... Zootopia Is The Best Looking movie and is the first one to deserve being in 3D animation... You may not like it but 3D animation is here to stay... Moana may have worked in 2D but that 3D water effect no way that would have looked as good in 2D... If you can't look past animation then i feel bad for you... The Animation is just one part of it... The stories and characters are just as important... If your just looking at the animation... Thin you are just getting a quarter of the movie... And if you are avoiding the movies because they are 3D animation then you are missing out big time... Zootopia needs a Sequel... And I'd like to see Moana get one too.

I'm not really a fan of 3D either. But I was planning to be as animator for Pixars someday or creating my own show. Kieran Stark I get it, but Ariel was just overprotecting Melody where as Trump's just a racist.
@kieranstark72136 жыл бұрын
Yeah, let's face it. People like me have a very rough history with Princess Ariel because in The Little Mermaid 1, she never developed from being ungrateful, selfish and a female stereotype in general. No wonder The Little Mermaid II would be horribly executed, but there is more reasons why such as PhantomStrider's points to why The Little Mermaid II: The Return to the Sea is another example of how charmless a sequel made by DisneyToon Studios can really be while the film's on this list of greatest Disney animated sequels are total exclusions). However, apart from its stereotypes, The Little Mermaid (1989) is actually partially well-made because of what the animators could do although it is a film released in the late '80s, actually beautiful songs by Alan Menken and specially badass villain Ursula.
@TennantJunkie19936 жыл бұрын
Kieran Stark Okay, Ariel wasn't ungrateful. She just wanted to discover a world outside the ocean. TRITON was the SELFISH ONE! He destroyed her trinket collection to teach her a lesson and in doing so pushed Ariel to lose her voice until the end of the movie.
@kieranstark72136 жыл бұрын
Oh, Triton too pissed me off in The Little Mermaid because of what you just described he has! But HE was the one that actually developed his attitude by having a MUCH more controlled temper. Princess Ariel could have journeyed King Triton to the human world so that they could give it a chance to see if it is that bad like in the near past or not. That's one of the many reasons I would be honored to remake (and/or parodize Walt Disney Animation Studio's The Little Mermaid) besides the fact that no matter how much she would want to be at or at least check out the human world, she could at least be grateful of the sea realm she is at. After all, it has magic! I know you disagree that Ariel is ungrateful, but I elaborated on why I respectfully disagree with you and find my opinion to be objective and try to be as respectful about it as possible.

What I appreciate about "Return to Neverland" is that WW2 is treated with respect, especially it's effect it can have on kids. I really wish people would stop saying “Fanfiction” like it’s the absolute worst thing ever. Some are really amazing. The Star Wars books were Fanfiction. Any novels you see published for a particular TV Shows or movies that aren’t a direct copy of them (Or a continuation of them) are Fanfiction. Although, there’s one Fanfiction I absolutely *loath*, which is 50 Shades Of Grey. No wonder it’s such a bad novel series and movie, because it was originally a Twilight Fanfiction. There’s so many Authors who began their careers writing Fanfiction and learned their trade before branching out and writing original plots. Marissa Meyer for example. She started out by writing Sailor Moon Fanfiction.

I also used to read HSM fanfictions. i remember one where Troy was in a mental hospital because he was mentally a child (and abused) and Gabriella was his Nurse. there was a KPop fanfiction i loved that you could choose your path in the story. Most chapters had an option at the end that would take you in a different direction and let you choose the story yourself and who you end up with as a love interest.

OH MY GOD! You're reminding me why I loved Return to Neverland sooooooo much! When I watched it as a kid I liked it, then I rewatched it (as one does). I never owned a copy and they played it on tv on Toon Disney and stuff and I just loved it. My favorite parts as a younger child were of captain hook and the squid and for a young kid it will crack you up. And being able to explore neverland when he brings Jane in is a DREAM! It brought so much fantasy in my young childhood. I would reenact my own captain hook and Jane/wendy scenes with some of my toys. And the movie provided me with enough for my young child instincts to awaken and for me to feel entranced. And even though the movie did later become heavy as a kid it was structured in such a way that it isn't a overbearing theme that will distract the gist of the story for a small conversation about it with younger elementary school kid. I never quite got the whole WWII thing because I was too young on my first watches as a young elementary school kid to and hadn't studied enough of it in school to make heads or tails of the time periods significance. But the movie (minus those parts) for a older elementary school kid which is slightly uneducated (about complex history topics) the movie really made me feel something truly spectacular. These emotions that I was now feeling I had never been able to feel or grasp as a child in any other movie this movie was still able to maintain a whimsical and fun charm. When you commented on how Jane picked up one of the lost boys and said "I have to go home " it hit home and I remember feeling the emotions as a kid. *Brief intermission here as I take a moment to calm my emotions because of my fond memories of this movie* *cries internally thinking about it* When Peter talked to wendy (as a younger kid it wasn't a big deal, but as a older kid on a new rewatch it was) it hit home and I remember having memories of crying and getting teary eyed. Right now I almost cried. Not because thinking of the scene makes you cry. But because of my fond memories of thinking about the scene and how I felt as a child when I finally got it and understood the meaning and significance of having to be grown up but not really having changed. The best part (after a clear explanation of the bomb shelter in the movie and all the WWII stuff as explained from my mother) was when the dad came home. And after I finally was old enough to understand what it actually meant for her father to return, as a slightly older kid self (older than my previously mentioned "old elementary school kid" me) I remember crying because I understood it. I never wanted to believe I could love a stupid disney sequel sooo much and I always thought it was wrong to. But you made me believe otherwise today and your review changed me. I just want to say thank you for reviewing these movies. It means a lot to me. Especially the Return to Neverland review. It brought back lost memories from my childhood, of loving the movie and playing make believe with my toys. This movie is a masterpiece and if it could keep a young elementary schooler entertained and later evoke emotions in a oler elementary school kid it just goes to show how amazing this movie really is. If you've actually read this or gone this far, just go watch the movie if you haven't already. But really though, even if you already watched it, WATCH IT AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN!

Hunchback II doesn't even look like the same universe as the first one. If they had to make a Hunchback II, they should have done a midquel about a younger Quasimodo trying to venture out, making one friend but eventually, Frollo finds out he's been sneaking out and he never sees that friend again. It would end with the gargoyles coming to life and becoming his new friends (possible hallucination implied for the adults watching), giving him a happy ending. It would still be stupid, but it might work.

Return to Neverland is probably the biggest reason why I’m so in love with Disney’s original Peter Pan as well as any and all adaptations and reimaginings of it. The classic story of the original film PLUS the newer, fresher, more fleshed-out style of the sequel combined just ENCHANTED me as a kid and I have dreamed of Neverland ever since. Really glad you put that one on top! The trend of late 90s/early 2000s midquel/sequels of CLASSICS FROM HALF A CENTURY BEFORE THEM got pretty awkward, and you can tell that a lot of the childish fart jokes bled into them a little too much at times- it’s my main criticism of Bambi 2, because it cheapens the aesthetic and mood SO much- but Return to Neverland doesn’t go too far with it and I appreciate that. It’s enough to make Peter and the Lost Boys believable as rambunctious kids who will never grow up, and tbh that really compliments the theme and Jane’s frustration with the whole ordeal. I would place Lady and the Tramp 2 in honorable mentions, because even though the plot and characters are trite and forgettable, it does still take a classic, simplistic story and world and expands upon it and explores the theme of family and a dog’s loyalty in a more fleshed-out way. Maybe not as visually stunning as Rescuers Down Under, but along the same veins I’d say.

Kronk's New Groove was never mentioned. Honestly, I preferred Kronk's New Groove vastly above the original and it gave a storyline of one of the lesser focused upon characters and his life working with the villain. Pull the lever, Kronk! WROOOOONG LEEVEEEEEERR!

I had never seen return to neverland, so i decided to check it out. I CRIED 6 TIMES!!! the first half of the movie is really dark and sad, there's war, jane's emotions throughout the film, and several moments where you just can't forget that through the whole adventure there is a war going on, that jane is away from her family through very hard times. The scene at the end especially got me when peter ended up seeing wendy again after all these years. There was just something very heartwarming about peter meeting her again. Thanks for recommending this to me! :)

Honeslty, I agree 100% with you, especially on the top 2 sequels. I remember as a kid checking out a twist in time and return to neverland pretty frequently at the library. Come to think of it, i think i watched return to neverland more than the original because i guess it was more available in the library, and i thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved scenes like the ones where jane betrays peter in exchange for a way home and when she straight up almost kills tinkerbell

21:34 they could have done a basic fanfiction "lost brother" and it would have worked better. Because maybe the brother ran away and got turned into a beast or something by the enchantress, who went to check his house to see if the rest of his family are worth saving. We could actually see the animation of her going to beasts' house and meeting him, showing us that she was actually the villian all along like in matpat's theory. The beast goes to find his brother after turning human. And the movie is better. Sure, its like a fanfic. But it is one since i just made it up.

Actually, The Little Mermaid II should be counted among the best sequels, noting that I always understood the motivation for Morgana's actions being to exceed her criticizing mother's expectations in Ursula's absence as well as to avenge Ursula and threaten Triton's family and seize the power over his kingdom and especially now that Ariel has a daughter of her own which she can use to her advantage in various ways (only to find that this whole wicked desire indeed never ends well), and Ariel obviously won't be the same person from the original film considering she's no longer a wild, naive, love-crazy teenage mermaid from the sea, but she's now an adult and a mother (this does have an effect on people) living a human life on land and having to consider her parenting responsibilities and difficulties as well as a great threat that now exists out at sea and threatens Ariel's family. While yes, the music isn't as great as the original but it's not that bad either, and the animation is quite beautiful, the new characters and their designs are pretty nice, the ending is pretty epic and intense, and it has a nostalgic value of course. Definitely not as good as the original, surely, but definitely not that bad either.

As a kid, I really liked Little Mermaid 2 and Mulan 2, and I hated Cinderella 3. I quickly changed my mind on Cinderella 3, but the other two, not so much. They're not as fundamentally good as the original, but I got genuine enjoyment out of them. For Mulan 2, I didn't like the squabbles either, I thought Mushu's change was entertaining even if it was out of character, but the princesses and soldiers thing really made me like it despite all that.

Yep,It's a shame that the writers of this sequel had turned The Beast from a kind,misunderstood character into a extremely arrogant jerk,who is even more threatening,ruthless, and antagonistic than he ever was in the original movie,I always hated how he acted horribly to Belle and treated the poor injured bird that she found by kidnapping it and making the bird(who is terrified of his appearance) sing for him, I was also mad when he knocked Webster off the table during his arguement with Belle and when he threw Him,Leplume,and Crane out of the castle when he found out that the letter was a forgery. They made him even worse and his actions were Unsympathically downright evil rather than outright selfish. I wish Donald Duck would beat the hell out of him for his evil and selfish actions in the movie,the same way he did to Pete in the Mickey short "Tapped Out"when he destroyed his nachos, and as revenge for beating him up in "The Adorable Couple" and Scaring the hell out of him when he they first encountered in the House of Mouse. I also want Lola to scare the hell out of him since she's more worse than him and Scrooge to hit him severly with his cane.
@poweroffriendship2.06 жыл бұрын
Like you said about the writers of the sequel turned Beast into a horrible monster, I think we know a simple answer to blame. Plus, no one asked for Beast to become Beast again because at the end of the original movie, he turned into a handsome Prince. That's just wrong!!!
