It has been explained in the Anime that gym leaders assess the skill level of the trainer they're facing by the number of badges and thus use different Pokemon. So who knows, Falkner might be a badass leader if he were allowed to use his proper team. Or he just sucks who knows :I
@KingShadowOmega8 жыл бұрын
This was sort of hinted at in the game too. In B2W2, Cheron uses weak pokemon, when a) you already know he has stronger pokemon and b) they mention how he wasn't using his actual team. So, this is sort of confirmed both in anime and in-game now.

@theletters96239 жыл бұрын
JUNKYNITE at least he says that he may be a total pushover
@ErukaFrogSoulEater9 жыл бұрын
JUNKYNITE He also was on my list. Here the list is: The WEAKEST IMO: #10 Every single rock-type gym in existance They are all effectively the same. Maybe it's hard if you take the fire starters, but as a girl who either takes water or grass type starters, it's EASY. #9 Falkner Just what you said. #8 Olympia and Wulfric They are at the same spot because I have the same issue with both. They are 7th and 8th gym leaders and have THREE POKEMON. Is this some kind of joke? This tradition debuted in gen 5, and I hope it ends soon because it just makes it waaayyy too easy. How about this Team to make them harder? Olympia: Gallade, Guardevoir, Sigilyph, Metagross, Meowstic; Wulfric: Abomasnow, Walrein, Jynx, Mamoswine, Froslass, Weavile #7 Norman OK, why does everyone say this battle is so hard? His gym leader position has the same issue as his signature Pokemon Slaking. The ability. I guess it was included to keep Slaking from being unstoppable, but it didn't only stop it from being unstoppable, but made it one of the weakest Pokemon in the game. Its stats are good, but effectively, it has only half of its HP, Attack/Special Attack, and Defense/Special Defense thanks to its freaking ability. And people complain about Regigigas. This gym was actually very easy to me. #6 Giovanni This guy is not my final eighth gym leader on this list, but he is the most dissapointing. You've fought a Team of villains, and now, it is time for the final battle with the boss. Sounds cool - but then you realize he only uses incredibly weak Pokemon. Seriously - a Rhydon is the strongest Pokemon a gym leader in Kanto has! #5 Drayden My next pick shows perfectly how dissapointing last gym leaders can be. He only has three Pokemon, two of them being awfully weak, and one, his Haxorus, lacking good moves (X-Scissor is its only move with a base power over 70). I mean, he has a goddamn Haxorus but uses it so poorly that all you need to beat it up is a strong Ice-type. I was like "OMG! Eighth gym! Dragon-type gym! This is going to be so hard!" And all I got was this joke of a gym leader. #4 Byron On my Monotype Ice run, I've beat him up easily with Ice types. He's just incredibly weak. He said he is a challenge, compared to his son (who is the first gym leader), but I've never actually had one of my Pokemon faint and never needed to use a healing item in the gym battle. #3 Flannery I beat her up with Ice types. Nothing but Ice types. And all had a weakness to fire. There's really no excuse of her being weak. #2 Blaine Again, just what you said. #1 Tate and Liza The only gym leaders that have never inflicted damage on my Pokemon. Seriously!! They only have two Pokemon, Solrock and Lunatone, both having a base stat total of 440, which is insanely bad. The only thing that's standing out about them is that their Pokemon are a bit overleveled, but that does not make up for them only having two weak Pokemon as the seventh gym leaders!!! Even the trainers in the gym are a bigger challenge than freaking Tate & Liza!
@ErukaFrogSoulEater9 жыл бұрын
***** He NEEDS more Pokemon! Eight gym leader and only three Pokemon. WHAT THE FUCK!?
@ErukaFrogSoulEater9 жыл бұрын
***** Actually they only had Xatu and Claydol in Emerald, a game made to be harder than the originals. And I did not have trouble in Emerald either, I one-shotted all of their Pokemon. In Ruby, Saphire, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Saphire, they only had two, as I said, base 440 stat total Pokemon. And in Emerald they may be harder but are still easy as fuck and get one-shotted all the time. I have never not one-shotted one of their Pokemon.

To be honest, any Gym Leader is easy when you have the right Type advantages. I personally only had troubles with Gym Battles when I get a new Gen Pokemon game where I'm not familiar with some of the new Pokemon's Types (mostly duel types)
@pileofhazelnuts8 жыл бұрын
Well some gym leaders can be a pain in the arse even if you have the right types. Take candice from gen 4 for example, her team has a medicham (psychic/fighting) along with a Pokemon much more overleveled compared to the area/trainers you're in.
@SSBBplayer18 жыл бұрын
I personally never had problems with that Gym. But I know for a fact that everyone has troubles with certain Gyms where as some do not so maybe it is pretty difficult but I was just over leveled at that time? I don't remember, its been awhile since I last played 4th Gen. However I do find it extremely odd that she have that Pokemon when shes a Ice Type Gym Leader.
@pileofhazelnuts8 жыл бұрын
I'm going to presume you chose a Chimchar? It's easier with a fire type but there weren't many options (Piplup was my starter due to making the elite four easier). Also some of the gyms/elite four members do have Pokemon that are not specifically their type. Flint had buneary, steelix and drifloon on him as well as the two fire types. Candice I struggled on due to being underleved and I didn't have the right types. I also struggled on the fighting one (sorry forgot her name, she's only the third leader and I beat her ages ago) due to underleveled Pokemon.
@SSBBplayer18 жыл бұрын
Actually, I also started with Piplup, I'm starting to think I was overleveled since I don't recall struggling at any point of the game. But if that was the case it must have taken me forever to beat the game due to how slow it was plus adding up all that grinding from wild Pokemon.....yikes 0_0 Anyways I can understand that some of them battles could be difficult even with the right Pokemon, it just doesn't seem right to judge how bad a Gym was simply due being able to be be swept by certain types when most Gyms fall under that category. What was with 4th Gen Gym Leaders and Elites having odd out of Types Pokemon? Cynthia I can understand since shes the Champion but the others not so much, although if I recall they changed Flints Team around to all Fire Types in Platinum so I guess I can let it slide, lol.
@pileofhazelnuts8 жыл бұрын
+BlueWolfGamer I spent more time filling my pokedex than actually grinding, it took too long (unless I was after a specific Pokemon). I managed to beat the elite four underleveled thanks to my empoleon. I am planing to start the game again but I'm waiting for my brother to get pearl/platinum to trade across my dragonite. I also find it unfair that in platinum Flint changed. It made the e4 much too easy.
@ZerryBerrytheSpaceRaccoon8 жыл бұрын
All types are great in their own special way (yes, that even includes Bug types and Grass types).
@pileofhazelnuts8 жыл бұрын
Grass types can be very powerful if duel typed and put with the right moves. Same with bug types being able to defeat one of the most op types in the game. I normally choose a grass type (that excludes gen 4 where I chose piplup to make the elite four easier).
@ryrysamurai9210 жыл бұрын
most to all Gym Leaders were easy to veteran players. All you need is a decent understanding of type advantages, and seasoned players seldom needed even that. So yeah, depending on your preferences of Pokemon you train, some are bound to be way easier than others. For example, people almost unanimously call out Whitney in Gen 2 as one of the most frustrating trainers in the game, but the game gives you plenty of ways to defeat her. You can trade for a machop in the the Goldenrod mart, you can use headbutt to catch a Heracross in Azalea town, or you can travel to the route ahead and catch a Nidoran and teach it double kick Bayleef trainers can status Miltank easily and it also has access to screens if I remember correctly. A Gastly caught in Sprout Tower can Spite Miltanks Rollouts until it's run out of PP, Drowzee, Gastly or Hoot Hoot can use Hypnosis... You can catch a rock type in the Cave between Azalea and Violet..anyway the point is, it's all about perspective. The Hardest trainer for some is the Easiest to others

Lt. Surge from Yellow comes to mind. He has only one Pokemon: a Raichu. This makes him easy pickings for a Sandshrew or Diglestt, especially since you'd just recieved the Dig TM, which, at the time, had the same base power as Earthquake.Then there's Wulfric. I don't even remember what he had because my underleveled unevolved Fennekin one-shot everything. He even says at the start of the battle that it would probably be the easiest fight we'd ever have.
@JohnWatsonPuppetChannel9 жыл бұрын
Bugsy from the 2nd generation game is easy if you have a good strong fire or flying type. He has a Metapod & Kakuna. Scyther, however, could be a pain, but as long as your fire or flying type is strong enough, he can be easy.

Great list, I agree with each of these entries. Falkner's team is very disappointing since it consists of one evolutionary line, and there are no Johto Pokemon on his team. Why not put a Hoothoot on his team at least? Any of the Rock-type gym leaders, except Brock, would be a good candidate for this list. I would choose either Roxanne or Roark. Roxanne is a good choice because at least Roark has a team of 3 Pokemon. I totally forgot Ramos was even a gym leader. His team is definitely a pushover like most Grass-type specialists. At this point in the game, your team most likely consists of fully evolved Pokemon and Grass-types have a lot of weaknesses. It doesn't help that none of his team can combat any of the weaknesses like Flying, Fire, and Ice. Brycen would've been my number one pick. His team consists of 2 Pokemon we already battled multiple times with the other trainers in the gym. So they're no surprises. Beartic is the only unfamiliar face, but he is only the evolved form of Chubchoo who we also fought against in the gym. I totally forgot Blaine and I agree with his position. There are so many Water-types in Kanto and his team doesn't have a moveset that can combat the Water weakness. Just use Surf the entire battle and his team will turn into a pile of ash.

To be totally honest, my answer is going to be different from somebody else's answer. Early gym leader difficulty is often based on what starter you chose, and how you are deciding to play the game. If you are looking for specific pokemon to fill your team, you may have a harder time (assuming first playthrough) because you won't know WHAT those pokemon will be, or WHEN you will get them. If you're one of the types that catches everything you see and trains every pokemon you get on your first run through, you're going to be underleveled most likely. Any of these things can be a factor in making gym leaders harder for one person over another. Or, if you're a pokemon veteran, you know what types will be inherently good and what pokemon on each route may prove useful down the road. It's easier to pick ahead of time what to train and when. For example, if there's a grass type gym coming up, don't use your fire type until you get to the gym, because your others won't have a chance to sweep for EXP like your fire type will. that way, you don't have an unbalanced team. No matter which way you slice it, what makes a gym leader difficult or easy is entirely subjective and will be different for every person.
@dragonboytsubasa8 жыл бұрын
Having started with a Chikorita in the original Gold/Silver/Crystal games, I'll have to disagree with you on Faulkner. He was really hard to beat even though I caught a Geodude in that frigging pitch black cave just outside Violet City and levelled it up so it had Rock Throw. I agree with you on the others though, and I also think Lt. Surge was one the easier gym leaders. All I had to do if I was at a type disadvantage was catch a Diglett in Diglett Cave and I was good to go. Or a Geodude in Mt. Moon. Or both.

In my opinion, Cilan Cress and Chili were the absolute worst. I honestly expected I'd have to fight all three of them individually, that would have been a better challenge, but nope. Just fight one and you get a badge. They're so bad they didn't even show up to fight Team Plasma like the actual good gym leaders in Black and White.

I know, right?! I just commented on her just now on this video! She wasn't the weakest Gym Leader though, but I never really had a problem with her either. I have a friend that said he had a hard problem with her and her Miltank and it using Rollout. It never got the chance to use it on me. I played her a month ago on Crystal and I had a Pidgeotto in the lead in my team and one if it moves was Whirlwind and I used it as soon as the battle started and switched her Clefairy with her Miltank and took out that first and it never used Rollout and then I swept her Clefairy with my Quilava. I'll admit, she did beat my Pidgeotto though. I forgot what moves she used though. But I beat Whitney this way though.

Falkner was actually a pain for me. Often. He has a power advantage over Chikorita outright and his Mud-Slap can whittle down Cyndaquil/Quilava. I often went to Dark Cave and caught a Geodude, or traded Bellsprout for Onix, and leveled either or both till they learned Rock Throw for no hassle.

Roxanne was actually really hard for me to beat when I played Emerald and Omega Ruby because in both games I chose Torchic and wasn't very smart about the type disadvantages. When I got Omega Ruby, I "cheated" because when I got the game, it came with a free Dragonite that was already level 50. It didn't obey me too much but it got me through the gym. After that I never really used it, even when I could get Pokemon level 50 or under to obey me

Personally, I'd say.. Literally all Sinnoh Gym Leaders!!! Roark could be swept easily, Gardenia was a HUGE pushover if you chose Chimchar, Maylene was easy because her Lucario can be OHKOed by a Monferno or Infernape, Wake was easy to defeat (despite the hard puzzle) if you caught Shinx and trained it (Same goes with Budew), Fantina was just a pushover (despite her Drifblum's Aftermath), Byron was easy if you had a fire, ground, or fighting time, which at the time you would, Candice was EASY if you had a fire, fighting, steel, or rock type, which you probably did at the time, and Volkner was just a push-over!

I love Pokemon Diamond and Pearl but I think the main problem I have with it is the fact that none of the gym leaders go in order by difficulty making the game unbalanced. It's like the 3rd gym leader is hard then suddenly the last gym leader is easier to beat than the first.

Some gym leaders and elite 4 members can be really easy if you have an appropriate counter for them. Koga and Agatha, for example, are really easy if you have a pokemon with safeguard (defeated both using only a Butterfree on LG). And let's not talk about Norman's Slaking going down to pokemon with protect and toxic/dig because of the Truant ability.

Usually I find that gym leaders get easier and easier as you get through the game because more options are open to you. I say usually because there's sometimes the odd-one out like Claire or Juan, with his annoying double-teaming Kingdra. That being said I recall Volkner from Gen4 being specially disappointing. The first time I fought him he literally didn't touch me. I beat all his team with a single Pokemon and didn't receive a single scratch. Also, pretty much all Gym Leaders from Gen6 are really easy. Having said that, Blaine is definitely one of the easiest Gym leaders ever. A pity, because he's also one of my favorites design-wise.

I hate the fight with Whitney for a WAY different reason than others. I hate it because when I was playing the Jhoto games, I heard from everyone and their dog that she was a nightmare, and when I got to her with a quilava, geodude, and other pokemon I usually didn't use, I was able to destroy her with those two. Heck, her clefairy was harder because it used energy ball on geodude, and he survived with two HP. I was dissapointed and always sigh when others rant about her and say how "Hard" she is.
