I believe I may have met at least one Yakuza member during my visit to Tokyo. Although I was absolutely terrified when I suspected this, I realized that showing respect was the best way to guarantee that nothing bad would happen. In fact, I believe that the group simply wishes to pursue its own interests discreetly, and those who get in the way often pay the price. Then again. respect is a big part of Japanese culture to begin with, and I found it astounding how even as a foreigner I was shown respect.

I used to live in Honolulu, and came across Yakuza vacationing. (Showering off the sand in Waikiki, actually.) Tattoos, cut pinkies, the whole nine yards. One must’ve seen my mixture of surprise and fear; he looked at me, flashed a very genuine smile, and gave me the Shaka sign. (Again, pinky half-gone.) I did the same and walked on.

For the 'good' the yakuza do, it's actually a front. They masquerade as good guys a lot of the time, even doing fundraisers and charity work, but that's to keep the common populace on their side. A lot of their hide outs, shady dealings, murders, and prostitution rings would be turned over to the government. They can do some truly remarkable things don't get me wrong, but they are still a crime syndicate and a very successful one for a reason.

I like the yakuza because they unlike other gangs who constantly punk on each other, they still maintain their respect. I'm glad your top point at least illustrated to a small degree the complex dynamics that exist between the Yakuza and the other citizens of Japan. While pretty much anything goes in terms of 'business' dealings, the Yakuza often 'police' the territories that belong to them and are, in a sense, responsible for the people living in their districts. In many situations citizens approach local Yakuza before the police, because they know they'll get swifter results. I'm not saying this is a good thing, but it certainly makes for an interesting dynamic. I wish you spoken more about their tattoos, though. There's a very traditional method that Yakuza use that's different from Western tattoo artists, and supposedly it's much more painful. It's pretty interesting.
