No, index funds and ETFs are not the same.

No. These are Index mutual funds. Usually people drop the "mutual" part in casual conversations, but it is still a mutual fund. As long as it isn't an actively managed mutual fund, they are far better than ETFs for tax protected accounts (401k plans, 403B plans, and IRAs). ETF (Exchange Traded Funds) are far better for accounts that get taxed. Also, they are great if you change brokers often or want to change brokers on a whim.
