Ash, your point about having the confidence to be intentionally well-dressed is such a valid one. Along the way, there were many times when I put the jacket back on the hanger or took out the pocket square, etc before I left the house. As someone who was never the best-dressed man in the group, I decided last year to step up my style game. Now, wearing a navy blazer, or a wool sports jacket seems quite natural. And I am always the only one with a pocket square. Have a great weekend all.

My grandfather raised me to always be a gentleman. That meant dressing well and showing self respect. Unfortunately here in the US, a lot of men no longer have a desire to dress appropriately. I cringe every time I see grown men walking around in public wearing pajama bottoms, or t-shirts with vulgarity splashed across their chests. It is very refreshing to watch a channel such as yours and know that there are still men who desire to still be gentlemen and dress accordingly. I thank you sir.

The confidence issue is an excellent point. I watched this yesterday before embarking on a day out. I am currently transitioning my wardrobe and each time I go out I get a little nervous. One of my best friends of many years greeted me with, "so this is day wear now, is it?" All in good fun and I held my nerve. I was sporting a pair of cotton jeans that I've had for some time, but Chapped it up with a grey wool sports jacket, Oxford shirt, waistcoat and Loake boots. I even topped it off with a fob watch. All on a tight budget. I grew in confidence as the day progressed, got a couple of admiring glances and even a comment from one young lady, "oooh, you look smart!" It's been a long time since that has happened, lol. Stay strong and keep your faith, Chaps.

"I'm going to look like a fool." First of all, just think about how little thought you spend on what others do. Second of all, if there's one man wearing a well fitted suit in a room and you have no other information than it is a meeting, what do you think? You don't think he's a clown; you assume he's their boss. The association of a suit is with wealth, power, status, prestige. So just put on that outfit you like, walk into that room and if anyone asks why the suit, just say it's Wednesday. I just love how Raphael from GG had this story about him and his wife going to a new restaurant dressed to the nines where it's so unusual for people to dress up the waitress asked them where they were going and they answered "here." So, that's what I told my wife. We'll just dress up and hit a restaurant or a bar regardless of what kind of place it is. People will just have a good stare and we won't care. Otherwise, we'd always be dressing sloppily because that's what everyone does all the time -- sometimes even at weddings and funerals.

Your last point is salient. The need to conform is so strong and naturally so when young. As I have aged I have acquired a wardrobe suitable for most social occasions, along with a very patient seamstress, and I can say with confidence that I am able to dress appropriately and well. Many an evening I have gone out on a social excursion, and perfect strangers, very often younger people, have gone out of their way to give compliments. At first I was taken aback at the attention and tended to be a bit self deprecating but over time, I learnt to smile and say, "thank you". A bit slow on the uptake, I have realised that whilst I enjoy dressing well, the enjoyment is not always all mine.

I had the same problem years ago. In addition to the fact that I often was the only one who wears a hat, my wife didn't like it, too. But I wore my hat aswell. Not all the time, but more and more often. In the beginning it was a sort of a challenge for me, I earned looks from other people on the streets, but I got used to that. Nowadays I see quite a lot of other men wearig a hat, it becomes to be usual. Was I a trend setter? My next challenge is to wear in public my bowler hat - which I bought last week. This will be even more challenging because I've never seen anyone wearing such a hat in "normal life".

I have to tell you, when I dress better I feel better. You are correct about having the self-esteem to dress well. Ash. Great advice as always. Fit is King and I agree one of my biggest pet peeves is seeing pant legs spilling all over the shoe. Also have to agree fully with you on owning your look. Lead by example and others will follow. A fellow co-worker the other day said how nice I looked and the other associate next to him said he always looks nice. That is what you're striving for. I put a new cover on my ironing board yesterday. I iron all my clothes including those worn for sporting activities as they fit better without distracting creases. A coach, who went on to do great things, once told me that taking care of your equipment and arriving with purpose as though you belong there, is the first step in the psychological game, particularly where confidence is critically important to both performance and safety.

I always cared how I looked - even as a very small “chap;” e.g., there were clothes I would only wear in our backyard - not thinking them appropriate for the more public front yard.

I love brands like Private White VC, Allen Edmonds and Rancourt & Co where the cost is in the quality of the materials and the craftsmanship, rather than a brand. With these brands, there is no logo so no one has any idea what brand they are. I was out a couple of months ago with my cousin who was dressed like a hobo (his hoody jacket was dirty, ripped and faded), who was boasting that his jacket cost more than my Private White VC Mac because it had no logo and his did. I didn't correct him as I really don't care what people think of my clothes, but it just goes to show what the average person thinks regarding brand logos and cost. At work, I am always the best dressed in my team of 12. We work in data, but for one of the Big 4 banks in Australia, and other than one other guy (out of eight men), everyone else dresses like crap. I always get complimented by the women in my team for looking sharp with my pocket square, and stylish (but classic) sportscoat.

The trend of slim and super slim has stubbornly been around for too long. I wonder when fashion will finally move on. I can't stand seeing those compressed limbs anymore. It has been for years now.. My style might be often colourful even flamboyant at times but I pay great attention not to slip towards the clownish side.

Shoe polishing/shine is suitable for flannel/suit trousers only. Wearing shiny shoes (even if good quality) with jeans is a universally terrible look. I've seen this pushed on so many menswear channels and it's just not a go-er. For any non formal look, shoes look much better in a matte finish and even with a bit of wear/patina to them. Leather should be nourished/conditioned (not scruffy, obviously) and they should remain in sound structural condition, however a polish/shine finish is to be avoided like the plague.

I'm so glad I stumbled upon your channel; it's so refreshing to see someone celebrating the choice to dress in a manner that allows for individuality and self-confidence. I was fortunate in that my parents both worked (quite successfully) in the fashion industry. I was perhaps an odd child, in that I preferred to wear suits and a top hat, and often walk with a stylish cane. No doubt, adults around me were amused, and I know that my friends were mostly perplexed; I think they assumed I was an alien. And although my parents worked in women's fashions, I had the benefit of shopping for my own clothes with my parents pointing out garments which exhibited 'faulty lines' or were badly sewn. I grew up wearing tailored suits and coats, and when I attained a rebellious age, I even went so far as to buy suits that weren't bespoke! Of course, I laugh about that now, but at the time my parents were mortified. My mother would point out everything that was 'wrong' with the garment in question, and although I shrugged it off, I'd secretly be troubled by it and quickly lose interest in the garment. Eventually I admitted the error of my ways. Not that I buy much bespoke tailored clothing these days, but I do remain quite careful about the choices I make. For better or worse, I've also passed on my 'obsession' to my daughter, and I'm happy to see she certainly knows fine clothes when she sees them. But I digress.... Great advice as always Ash! Get a well fitting suit or sartorial piece and wear it until you’re comfortable in it. Once you are, you will emanate a sense of sprezzatura or effortless style. I’ve received many compliments wearing a Bavarian Alpine hat and an edelweiss flower pinned on my lapel.

Your remarks about quality really resonates with me. I am a working gentleman who needs quality of rugged workwear, while wearing some more traditional but smart blue collar workwear. I am a 6xl shirt size with a 33" inside leg, so clothes cost a lot regardless of brand, so by buying quality I pay more upfront but not more in the long term. I would also say that dressing according to your body shape is important. As a portly chap, I find proper button-on braces tend to work better than a belt, and making sure that you aren't girdled as a belt does.

Top advice as always. On the confidence angle you discussed, it may be worth considering the wise words of the Swan of Avon, ''All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players''. If one takes the trouble to put some effort into ones appearance, the rest of the 'Players' will have a natural tendency to maybe defer to one they assume to be higher up in the billing of life's play. That will have a synergistic effect on acquiring confidence. :)

Good morning Ash a well ironed shirt is like a pair of well polished shoes it shows people that you care about your appearance. As you said you are judged on your appearance, it doesn't take long to iron a shirt or a pair of trousers and to polish your shoes. A friend of mine would just iron the front of a shirt if he was wearing a suit jacket until he had to take it off one time when he got to hot when he was giving a presentation in front of top executives . He's was given a right rollicking by his manager at the time, this was before everything went casual in the workplace.

Great advice, and very true on the issue of brands. People pay a lot of money over and above what an item is worth, for the brand name. They do so, because they hope it says something about them. The good news is that it does. The bad news, is it's not what they hoped for. Go for quality.

Some quality items are definitely going to be worth their price. For instance, goodyear welted and blake stiched leather footwear is a good example as the uppers can last decades and either of these constructions allow the soles to be replaced. Some higher end leather bags are also worth the price as good leather ages well, can be repaired and is very durable. The same goes for overcoats are things you can basically buy once and own for decades. Now, for suits, I have seen some bespoke suits survive almost a century. High end suits are NEVER dry cleaned -- they get a sponge and press from a tailor and you can learn to do that yourself even for your cheaper stuff. Now, it doesn't have to be a bespoke suit to last you a decade or more, but it might have to be structured by a canvas and not a fused interlining as the glue would eventually give out. Also, most men will have issues with their pants before they have issues with their jackets -- friction between tighs, at the knee, from a belt, etc. are where dammage is most common -- so it's not uncommon for people to buy 1 jacket and 2 pairs of the same pants. So, here, it depends, but if you take good care of it and NEVER send it for a dry clean unless of an emergency, a quality suit in a natural fabric and with a full canvas (or just no lining for the summer) can survive a very long time. I know a guy who wears suits made in the 40s every day. They still look like they're in top shape, but they were made with high quality worsted wools (or some cotton/linen options for summer suits). Now, what if you can't splurge on that stuff? Well, one strategy is to purchase one or two higher quality items and compromise on the rest until you can replace them with higher quality items. That way, you can still get dressed and start out somewhere, but it won't cost a fortune all at once and you'll end up with a gentleman's wardrobe all in good quality items a few years later.

Your daily attention to your personal appearance, your health, your stance, understanding your financial position, your ability to speak well, showing appreciation of others and more will generate a level of unmatched confidence in yourself and those around you. Understanding that it’s not about net worth… it’s about self worth.

I'm about 2 videos into your channel and I'm hooked. Excellent advice so far and given very eloquently. I do want to share something from growing up. My paternal grandfather was as stingy as he could be. He would buy the cheapest clothes and never really took care of how he looked. He took the view that clothes will wear out so why spend extra money on them. In his defense, he was an outdoorsman, but he was also an owner of a fairly popular burger joint. My grandmother viewed clothing as something that should be well made and if it was pricey, so be it. She never equated price means quality but quality can be expensive. As she put it, if a pair of shoes cost $100 and last a year and another cost $30 and last 3 months, how much money did you spend? I say shoes because she was a stickler about shoes. She said, as a man, I should have at the minimum 3 pairs. One for work, one for play, and one for dress. Regardless of what they were used for they should be cleaned appropriately and taken care of.

Another example of a faux pas that we must add: leaving the tags on the suit, coat, or jacket. By that I mean the lightly sewn on branded tags on the exterior of the sleeve. These are just there for advertising purposes in the shop and must be removed before the suit or jacket are worn. The same applies to the thin thread holding the vents in the jacket together - usually stitched like a cross. Sometimes the pockets also require the removal of a thread. -I have witnessed the above on many occasions in London and it pains me to see this. It be even worse than an ill-fitting jacket. Here in the USA , men in general dress sloppy, under the guise of being "casual " I was being fitted for trousers immediately tried to give me the bunched look on my shoes I said no way! I wanted a clean straight line no bend or bunching. David Niven, nor Grant or Sinatra or Dean Martin had a kink in their slacks.

Hell - you have heard of David Niven!! You’re a champ. I have downloaded quite a few images of him from the web as he was always well dressed, particularly during the golden age of Hollywood. These pictures give us brilliant ideas on how to dress well. Grant, Sinatra and Dean Martin are also superb style icons. As are Fred Astaire and Gregory Peck. Many of these men had their wardrobes made in Saville Row.

Fantastic video Ash! As I am an "oldie" (I am 63 years old) I have been there and done it. Having said that, luckily my instinct, or common sense, prevented me to do most of those mistakes you pointed out. I would like to highlight two things you said: A) EVERYTHING with a famous logo is overpriced junk! I never fell for that. In fact, I had an experience that confirmed my point of view. I was living in Australia and in 2001 I got a job as a salesman in a Ralph Lauren shop in Sydney. Of course, all the garments were ridiculously overpriced and I noticed that some of the shirts, retailing then at 120 Australian dollars, were made in Sri Lanka or India. What a rip off! B) I am proud to say I never felt insecure or uncomfortable for being smartly dressed among people who were not. As you said once, the main thing is to not go OTT. As a friend of mine once said. I showed up to an academic workshop last Monday wearing khaki chinos, a white shirt, a mid gray sport coat (it's a wool and silk blend with interesting variation in the color and with some nice texture in the weave), a navy striped tie (it's a wool and linen blend, so it's not particularly shiny and it has some texture to it) and brown leather shoes and belt. I was the only man weating a jacket, a tie or dress shoes in the room. It was nothing excessively formal, but I definitely stood out. I got a few compliments and some people approached me for a chat because of it.

I find that ensuring proper fit is almost always a 2 step process: Buying the right size; and then getting it altered for the right fit.

As far as confidence and dressing well go, it can be a bit of a Catch 22 situation. My advice to younger gents, or those inexperienced in dressing sharp, would be practice makes perfect. Practice wearing your suit or sports coat at home and looking in the mirror, practice walking in those dress shoes or boots, and practice tying and wearing a tie and wearing other sharp accessories. This channel and others dealing with classic men’s style are great at-home resources. Use them to your advantage as guides, but also do a bit of your own research to figure out and develop your own personal style. Best of luck!

These are all quite good and spot-on! Sometimes I use a steamer instead of an iron for in between ironing just to get out some wrinkles. I also hear "fit is king" and "be the best dressed in the room" a lot. I enjoy a good neck tie and I like a bow tie. My wife likes the bow tie. (Nothing obnoxious).

So that in mind, wouldn’t you say that the imaginary gentleman who chooses to remove his tie upon seeing that non of his peers are equally formal at a team meeting, is simply adapting to the overall level of social formality?

That is one interpretation, but I would suggest that a chap, who amends his dress standards to fit in with others in such a situation has bowed to peer pressure and has allowed a lack of personal confidence to steer him away from his desired appearance.

To my mind, nothing says "I'm trying too hard" or "I'm looking to impress people re: the size of my wallet" like branded clothing with huge, prominent logos. -In many cases, the quality of the garment is dubious, the price is incredibly inflated, and the production has occurred in Third World sweatshops. Go for a silk, wool, or cotton pocket square in a colour/pattern that compliments, but never matches, your tie. -I don't leave the house wearing a suit, blazer, or sport coat without a pocket square. (I'm just about addicted to paisley at this point.)

ill fitting Blazers is a massive pet peeve, not only on others but on myself, I got lucky on my first Navy Sports jacket purchase where it fits perfectly and to this day is my template for newer blazers. Every sports jacket and suit blazer has had to be altered. I can't stand big shoulders, even if I buy a few inches smaller than what I am, 46 - 44, the shoulders are still way too long, making this one alteration, reducing shoulder length by 3 inches turns shabby into sharp imho

I couldn't agree more about fit. It isn't just the size, it's the shape that matters. If a bespoke item is too expensive it's worth having an off the peg one altered by a skilled alterations specialist. I have been continually dumbfounded by Mr Sunak's choice of clothing. As a man of unlimited financial means, I simply cannot fathom why he dresses so poorly. He is a small chap, only 5ft6in and lean (verging on skinny) so why he wears clothes that make him look smaller and draw emphasis to his meagre frame his baffling! He needs a friend to give him a nudge and sent him to Dege & Skinner for a makeover.

Thanks for another good and useful video. I agree with everything said. Regarding shoes, what is your opinion on soles: leather, double leather, dainite, commando? And shirts, do you prefer to fold them or hang them? I always iron my shirts and then fold them very carefully, mainly due to lack of wardrobe space.

I hang them on wooden hangers. Portable racks can be inexpensive and can be moved anywhere that there is room.

I usually opt for Dainite soles on most of my footwear due to the weather here in the UK, but I do have boots with commando soles for outdoor situations and I also have most of my smarter dress shoes shod in leather - it is a true case of horses for courses!

Thank you for the video. Ironically, many of Daniel Craig’s outfits actually fit very poorly as he’s a victim of silly fashion trends. That started with Skyfall in 2012. You may notice that his suit from Quantum of Solace (at 11:36) fits very different from the suits in his later James Bond films. It’s perfection! Speaking of “heritage brands” vs “fashion brands”, the old heritage brands with rich history (of which there are plenty in the UK) often lack the kinds of interesting stylish elements that the slightly more fashion-conscious brands have. After all, fashion designers exist for a reason. Yes, many fashion brands do not offer high quality products, and many fashion brands are obnoxiously overpriced, but people do not only pay for the name on the tag, they also often pay for the style. Old traditional brands, as much as I love and respect them, do tend to look boring and dusty at times. It is important to find a good balance without going to the extremes.
