10:35 correction. You are not losing that space. When you watch through viewfinder, the touchscreen behaves like a touchpad. So you can "push" the focus point anywhere you like by touching anywhere on the screen. Anyway great tips. I'm starting with this camera.

Maybe I missed it, but the AF Live View TRACKING is the big deal on this camera and you completely passed over? You can set tracking for the various focus areas. It is really "sticky" and makes the AF of this camera in a league of its own (and the A9)
@LoveAlexx4 жыл бұрын
Paul Wassermann where can I get to this AF Live View tracking setting? I don’t see it! Is it an option?
@danielandersoniii66974 жыл бұрын
@@LoveAlexx You need to set Autofocus mode to AF-C, then you can select it under Focus Area. It's called "Tracking: Flexible Spot ", it's the last option and only enabled in AF-C. At 7:35, you'll see at the bottom of the selection modes, there is on that is disabled. Mark Galer has an excellent video that describes it.
@dayton18555 жыл бұрын
A little correction... In AF-C the camera does not continuously focus unless you are half pressing the shutter. It was stated in the video that the camera continuously focuses in AF-C even when not touching the shutter button and that's not true. It only continuously focuses while half pressing the shutter button. There is a setting that will do this called AF ON but it is a separate setting from AF-C.
@3VAudioVideo5 жыл бұрын
I have the A6000 and In Video mode. it will always focus wherever the Flexible Spot box is unless I push the shutter down, and then it will stay locked and no longer change focus distance no matter where the box is. The only other way it will not focus is if i put it in manual focus mode. How do I get it to only change focus by pressing the shutter (so that it will focus to where the box is and no longer keep trying to focus to where the box is)? Keep in mind that I am only concerned here in Video mode and using the Flexible Spot box mode.

Good recommendations. Just two questions; the problems using the AF touch selection with the viewfinder only happens with left-handed eye, like you. The new SONY A6400 like all the A6xxx series cameras needs better video codecs. With a good 1080p quality It would not be necessary to record in 4K downsampling to FHD, with the associated problems of "rolling shutter", heating, no 50, 60, 120p, high memory and battery drain, big file size and time to edit. This little camera clash with so big lens!

Have just got a6400 and am about to watch your video in full. Ok, some will say, watch the video before commenting! However, what is it with this obsession that everyone who uses a camera should shoot in full manual? There seems to be some photo snobbery around that unless you shoot both in full Manual and RAW, you are second rate. FWIW, have shot film and now digital for many years. For the way I shoot, Aperture priority just suits my style of shooting...can dial in 1.4,1.8 or more ( depending on the lens) for very shallow depth of field and, if shooting landscapes set to f5.6,8.11.16 etc, What is the problem with this? If has just become automatic for me after so many years. Also, I am often, to the horror of internet photog snobs, happy to shoot in jpg only, or where possible, a combo of Raw and jpg. Don't fancy spending my life on a computer putting in a false sky on a scene well known to me and which I wish to replicate in the image.
@clisaa6974 Жыл бұрын
^ Do you have to put that lens cap on the view finder? Is it to protect the viewfinder?
@robertcudlipp34262 жыл бұрын
I never cease to be amazed at the inference that only those shooting in full manual and raw, are "true photographers. I have shot basically in Aperture priority as this simply suits my shooting style. I only occasionally spend hours manipulating an image on my computer,so jpgs mostly suit me. That said, it's pretty straightforward choosing to shoot both via the menus.

just got the A6400 . What settings do I set it to so that I can do this in video mode: Place the box over an object, press & release the shutter, so that the camera's focus is set to the distance the object was at (say 20 ft), and the focus remains at that distance (20FT) no matter where that object moves to and no matter what new object is in the box. It won't work this way. Instead, I need to keep the shutter pushed down while recording.

My biggest frustration with the new a6400 is you can't really toggle AF tracking on/off. It's a clunky 2-3 step process that can result in lost shots. You can set Tracking On to a custom button, but only for certain focus modes that leave the focus point up to the camera. And, Tracking On requires you to hold the button down. I wish I could point to a subject in Center Area focus and either lock focus or push a custom button (not hold it down) to initiate tracking. I feel like I am struggling to control AF. Also, I honestly don't understand moving a small focus box around the rear touch screen. Wouldn't it be much faster to use the Center Area focus box and just aim at the subject, press half shutter and shoot?

Bracketing. Left press the control wheel for Drive Modes. At least that's where I think it is. When you're scrolling through the modes, you'll see left and right carats which give you more options for the various bracketed shooting modes.

AF-C with touch operation on. Put that in your My Menu so you can go between touch to track and touch to focus. Then you can use any of the other focus areas from the Fn button. Michael the Maven likes to use Zone in video on the left side so when he's in the zone, it'll track his face. I've been using Wide with the occasional Center but no reason you can't use Spot or Flexible Spot too. Kinda wish it had half-shutter tracking but the touch option works too.

When shooting video with the a6400, is there a difference between: 1. shooting video in Manual Exposure mode (M on round mode nob) 2. shooting with Movie mode (so camera film symbol on the round nob) with exposure set to manual If there is a difference, what is it and which one is recommended by you to use? Thanks in advance!

You should always shoot video with the dial turned to video mode. It will add features and displays only for video use, in particular audio functions. Within the video mode you can then choose manual exposure mode within the menu (camera 2>exposure mode>manual)

I realise this is a 2 yo video but it contains many errors. AF-C doesn’t keep focusing without the shutter button pressed. But it will keep trying to focus if Pre-AF is left on which is the default. Turn Pre-AF to Off. With AF-A and AF-S you can’t use the fantastic “Real Time” AF tracking that sets this camera apart from its predecessors. With it set to Flexible Spot Tracking, it will lock onto what ever you select and hold it like a terrier. As for the touchscreen issue of selecting the focus point, you can set the touchscreen to use as little as 1 quarter of the screen to use for selecting focus. Should allow for even left eye focusers. I could go on! 😝
