I recently started learning Gàidhlig on duo lingo, but found you this week so subscribed. I'm pleasantly surprised by the amount of words I recognise that are similar to English, more so with Scotts English, if not always in the spelling at least in the pronunciation, it's fascinating. In another of your videos I mentioned that I intensely studied Gaidhlig around thirty years ago. Okay, I knew that someone might be alarmed by the song title "Fear a Bhata", so I transliterated, just as this video presents. 'S urainn dhomh Gaidlig a Bruidhinn, ann an Bhictoria, Stralia! A word for wild horse in Australian English is "Brumby", and it comes from the Gaelic word "Brummaigh", which means "Colt". Also, "digeridoo" is not an Australian Aboriginal word, it's of Gaelic origin as well! It comes from "Dudera dubh" which means "Pipe Black", or "Pipe of the Black Man". Australian English has a lot of Gaelic words, which makes perfect sense, considering how many Scottish and Irish Gaels were forcibly deported here, back in the day! Could you please explain the useage of diacritical markings of vowels in Gaidhlig. I was never taught this.

The sràc is used over vowels to show that a longer vowel sound is used. eg: bata (stick) 'buh-tuh' where the u sounds like the u in butter and the t is like the t in tongue. bàta (boat) 'baa-tuh' where the first a is drawn out like baa or bar. Earlier Gaelic writing also used an accent going the other way like in Irish but modern Gaelic only has the single diacritic.

Not sure about slang, but for police officer you could say "oifigear-poileis" or just "poileas."

Yes, most of Gàidhlig came from Old Irish, so Gaeilge is a huge influence.

If you mean that modern Irish and modern Scottish Gaelic developed from a common ancestor, then sure. But if you mean that the words came from Irish, then it would depend. The word "whisky" probably came into English from Scottish Gaelic while the word "whiskey" came to English from Irish!

@@CarlsLingoKingdom Middle Irish is the common ancestor. They separated much more recently, likely following the Plantation of Ulster. Gaelic probably has some Pictish influence but was otherwise part of a language continuum with Irish and Manx.

@@mikem9001 I've heard that but it's probably just the extra e was used in Anglo-Irish. Irish and Gaelic pronounce uisge/uisce very similarly but whisky begins with a w sound regardless of whether it has an e or not. Either that w sound evolved later within English or the dialect it was taken from sounded more like a w which possibly points to Gaelic being the origin for the word and then adopted also in Ireland.

@@damionkeeling3103 My comment was somewhat tongue-in-cheek. In fact, there is good reason to believe that Irish distillers in the 19th century began to use "whiskey" in order to differentiate their product from the Scottish version.

I'd say that all of these come from Irish which Scots gaelic came from, but each to his own opinion..! Modern American words that came from Irish would include Phoney, from Irish Fáinne meaning ring, they were sold to new Irish emigrants with fake metal, hence the name! A term not used as much, You dig it? (Understand?) From the Irish An dtuigeann to? Smiodioríní to Smithereens, break into pieces. Triús for trousers, brogue for shoe, barmbreác for speckled cake ( breác meaning speckled) eaten at Halloween, an Irish festival..

Also Halloween is not an Irish festival. Samhain is (pan-Celtic). Halloween is a more modern festival, combining Samhain with Christianity. And the name Halloween originates in Scotland. Also you may be interested to learn that your view of Irish and Scottish Gaelic is outdated. .

Tenerife, Spain, Africa. Oh, darn! Previously, in your excellent video from a month ago, I was chuffed to see you hadn't let your knowledge of Gaelic affect your pronunciation of your native English. But now I see you've let it be infiltrated. Pronouncing Gaelic as Gallick is like that other thankfully less widespread habit some learners of French have of calling it Fronsay, and those of German calling it Doitch, excuse my approximate English spellings of those foreign sounds. Please continue to learn excellent Gaelic, but you don't need to follow this new trend of thinking you've to now pronounce every language as it's pronounced within that language. Or if you do, then you should do it with them all, which would at least illustrate the absurdity of it, for example if you want to mention Chinese or Hungarian within a casual conversation with somebody who's not a linguist. Your native English pronunciation of Gaelic from last month was perfect, much easier understood by Joe Soap. And not reeking of pedantry. Also, the word Gallic is already taken, to refer to pre-post-Roman France (Gaul). Just a thought. Best wishes, Patrick.

Sometimes I say "Scottish Gaelic" to distinguish to a non-British audience, since many in the US (and elsewhere) easily confuse Gàidhlig and Gaeilge with the word "Gaelic." However, in Scotland, the term "Gallick" is often used even when speaking English or Scots, so to reflect that, I speak in that manner. Just depends on my audience. 🙂 When I read "Gallic," I do think of "Gallic Wars" by Julius Caesar, but for the language, I typically use "Gaulish."

They discard normal English pronunciation to imitate the name of the language WITHIN the language, like those who say "Fronsay" for "French", in a pedantic strategy to appear cleverer or more informed than others. It's actually nothing like English. It's actually linguistically closer to Latin than it is to English, as in the far distant past, the Italian Peninsula was inhabited by Celtic tribes, until one of them rose to dominance and took over the rest of them! These were, of course, the Romans, but the Romans were originally Celtic and had a Celtic language, which was ancient Latin.

@@PsychicIsaacs I don't think the Romans as a whole were originally Celtic, but some linguists do argue for an Italo-Celtic branch in the early differentiation of Proto-Indo European languages.

@@PsychicIsaacs If Akshat is from the sub-continent and speaks Hindi or Bengali as his first language (I am just guessing here), then he may well consider that Gaelic looks similar to English. Its often interesting to get a different perspective from other cultures.
