thank you for a concise explanation of the top bar hive, and it's benefits. Makes me wish I lived where I could have one. Love the background noises of the south.

Good video thank you. I have a top bar in Brisbane Australia but mine has the entrance holes along the side and bars are added to both ends. I think I prefer your design which encourages the bees to put the honey at one end!

I have been doing Langstroth hive for the longest time and tried top bar hive and fell in love with it. The hive is easier to use bees are so much calmer. I don't even like regular hives no more because of the TBH. I pretty much became a changed beekeeper. Other nice thing about the TBH is I can put one together in less than a day easy and simple to build and cheap.

Cheers for this, I've been looking for "commercial beehive sizes" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Tiyia Beehive Basophilic - (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some great things about it and my work buddy got great success with it.

Aloha, TBH's were first invented for peoples of 3rd world countries, away from power or the cost of industrial powered honey extractors. But as you pointed out, they allow us old and /or disabled to work hives w/o the equipment of big honey producers. Here in Hawaii, it can be very productive year round. There is no stop to the nectar flows due to the winter freeze.

been thinking about urban beekeeping of late. Watching a lot of vids. First time I have seen a top bar hive mounted on a single post. Edit: Oh just saw the other vid on the stand.

As luck would have it I just ordered from another company today, but your hives are beautiful and have some excellent features. I would like to know more about the way your hive is supported. I look forward to watching more of your videos.

Thank you for this video. What is at the bottom of the hive around the post? I imagine it’s to discourage ants, but curious.

What is the purpose of the Follower board, & why is it I don't hear anything about excluders with Top Bar hiving? Isn't there an issue of the queen laying eggs into the honey comb area, in topbar, like there is in the other types of hives? I'm not finding any topbar hive videos talking about this issue or the lack of excluders.

Advantage of the narrowed bottom vs 90 degree angled bottom? Just curious. It would be simpler to keep it a right angle all around.
@claythomas79822 жыл бұрын
I've watched over 40 videos on top bars and not one of them emphasized the importance of ensuring the hive is level both ways. Otherwise the bees will build straight comb and it will end up out of plumb and create a mess.

Wyatt's last name is Mangum, not Magnum. He is a math professor at Mary Washington. That does not diminish his knowledge of bees, he has been keeping them his entire life, but some folks have the impression that he is an entomologist, which he is not.

I think the extra holes are stupid. That just more ways for them to get infiltrated by yellow jackets or anything else. Everything else looks like a good idea though. Especially the stand that they are on. Ants are a pain. What the wire going to the other hive you got there?
@regencylass10 жыл бұрын
That "wire", I believe, is the water line that automatically keeps the water pan full (he talks about installing water lines to keep the pans full). With regards to the extra holes at the top, if you are worried about pests, a small piece of wire mesh/screen over the top holes would prevent entry or infiltration of pests, yet still serve the purpose of discouraging bees from building on the first two frames.

What keeps the queen from leaving the hive and the bees from swarming. If I spend 100$ plus on bees I don't want to loose them.
@stephenh12618 жыл бұрын
+pickleme101 queens actually leave and return frequently to mate and use the bathroom. swarming will happen naturally when they outgrow the hive. just watch for the signs like gathering in huge numbers on the outside sides of the hive.
