Tom is 100% correct. The Chinese EVs are evolving much quicker than the legacy automotive in the USA and Europe. Elon Musk has said as much, saying Tesla's real competition is from the Chinese.

I'd like to suggest a topic for the next podcast: Mozilla's study on privacy for connected vehicles. Remote connection via cellular networks is required for many helpful EV features (e.g., route planning, integration with mobile apps, Plug&Charge, etc.), but consumers have no control over all the collected data. It would be interesting to know what our podcast hosts think of what automakers should be doing about privacy, and if privacy policies should be considered when purchasing an EV.

It would be nice to have a discussion around data collection, privacy, and cyber security concerns around Chinese car brands. Security concerns with an app or phone hardware is one thing. A vehicle is another. At least for me, concerns around Chinese EV brands isn't around quality, but security. A discussion about how China is supporting the EV industry in China vs how the EU and U.S. are could make an interesting podcast as well.

The show was VW centric. I test drove an ID4 3x now and I just can't get into VW. I'm no speed demon, but the id4 just seems so slow. The interior seems cheap to me, controls confusing. Coupled with the VW reliability issues, I'm not sure why you'd choose this over a kia/hyundai or Mach E.

That charging curve for the lyriq is extremely disappointing. Where GM says they are on EVs and where they say are two very different things. They seem very far behind cutting edge, not adapting quick enough.

I’m with you Kyle I would never buy an EV with any kind of gear changing apparatus, dual motor EV has plenty of beans no need to add extra unneeded things that need more maintenance, more weight, ruins the smoothness we all love about an EV.

I have a 2023 ID4 ProS... love it. The software is fine and works ok for my use but I wonder if VW will update the older ID4's to a little better version with what we have. One would be having the icons across the top which would be a vast improvement for users. I understand the hardware would be the same but certainly they could redesign some of the interface. Do you think that might happen or will we be forgotten.

In regards to Chinese vehicles dominating in EU and UK I believe at some point and to protect the German auto industry, Those governing bodies will stick a much larger import tax and create some other new foreign tax on Chinese made vehicles to make them less price competitive with their german cars. There is already rumored talk of limiting imports from China. It does work just look at the reason why Chinese EV's are not flocking to the US markets.

We just finished a service and panel upgrade, 40A to 200A, overhead service and Level II charger. 3 months, $6800. Almost all the delay was city permits and waiting for the power company to approve it and hook it up. A large part of the cost was the new breaker box install and AF/GFCI breakers. Good conversation. You guys forgot about the quotas on Japanese cars in the early 80s. The big 3 dragged their feet and lost market share by giving up on small cars to the Japanese autos. 😢

Good point! I'm old enough to remember this, but had forgotten. We do, though, have a similar situation now, with tariffs taking the place of a negotiated quota. And, combined with our new manufacturing and buyer incentives for domestic-made vehicles, should start seeing companies set up factories here, just like the Japanese did in the eighties. I'm going to go watch Gung Ho now. 😀

Apologies for missing the live show. But I just want to add my 2 cents for the GTI and small hot cars in general in America. As many may have said, I don’t believe it’s lack of interest in the consumer but of manufacturers. SUVs, as practical as they are, have a greater profit margin for OEMs. With more and more people living in urban environments, the greater the need for a usable , affordable small cars. Design them from the ground up. The people room is there. Make them GTI hot, and you’ll have a winner!

56:00I absolutely agree with no stock is annoying and not good. But have you considered that the steering wheel can move much further forward to sit flush with the dashboard, maybe even fold a little too. This would be perfect in FSD mode? I think that could be a reasoning for removing the stock on the steering column.

I drive electric for the simplicity and lesser amount of moving parts, to add a two speed differential just isn’t necessary unless your strictly a road racer, for every day driving todays dual motor EVs are plenty fast. I would never buy an EV with an added shifting transmission, please keep the simplicity in building and maintaining EVs.

The new Model 3 should have had a power frunk instead of a second motor on the trunk. It also should have had a bumper camera so you can see as you approach a curb. Tesla says to use both hands to close the frunk lid but if you just got something out of the frunk you don't have both hands available, it need a power frunk. I like stalks also. We have a 22 model 3 and 23 model y both with the same user interface and that's really nice since my wife and I each drive both cars.

So long spent on the NACS rant. Why not speak on putting a towel over the plug with water on it to keep it from derating. Does that seem like a well engineered standard to someone out there? How about the diesel generators backing up the Kettleman city supercharger site, Google Tesla is a dirty little secret. I do appreciate the volume of Tesla superchargers out there, but to make it sound like a panacea seems a little naïve.

Kyle handled Jordan that way once because he charged in the morning versus before turning in for the night on a road trip. It was a 2022 with no preconditioning so I felt the critical critique was unmerited as the charge speed would be roughly the same. Not sure if Kyle is insecure and that’s why he is belittling of others but it certainly isn’t very becoming. If that was my wife, she definitely wouldn’t have responded so neutrally. 🤪🥊

I don't think average salary in Shenzhen, Guangdong or even Hong Kong and Beijing is close to the US average. I think it's between $25-30k and maybe a little more for factory workers, which is similar to what happens in Mexico or Brazil. But yeah, Chinese OEMs dominating car sales would mean bad news for factories in richer countries. I think the EU and the US will ban them altogether because they just can't compete on price.
@CMCNestT
@CMCNestT Жыл бұрын
China doesn't have an inexhaustible supply of cheap labor. And each generation is getting smaller. Labor rates in Mexico are now cheaper than China. And American OEMs can build affordable cars in Mexico and import them to the US and Canada far cheaper than exporting from China to USA. Additionally, Chinese OEMs will have to pay US distribution cost in the US. American truckers and salespeople will not work for Chinese wages.
@devilfriend
@devilfriend Жыл бұрын
@@CMCNestTIt goes ways though. Chinese OEMs are already building factories in Mexico and Brazil. The US market is "safe" but US and EU OEMs should be worried about their piece of the pie in the "Rest of the World" region.
