Hello David, thank you very much for these videos. I am from LATAM and from a country with a lot of inflation. Companies from the US or from other countries hire here but pay much less than what is paid in the US, because they know that no matter how much they pay, it is a lot of money compared to the devalued local currency. In this case, how to deal with the subject of the intended salary? And another thing: In an interview, and already tired of other interviews that did not progress, when they asked me about the expected salary, I told them 30% less than what is paid in the US for my experience and current state of skills. I thought that for me it's still a lot of money, and that they couldn't refuse to hire me. But, how can I fix this in future interviews in the process with the same company, if it moves forward?

There many different ways to learn! Starting with the basics is key. Certifications are a great way to get started but jumping into a SANS or OSCP course isn’t for the new person. I see younger folks who are trying to break into cyber from zero. You need something, certs are a continuum but at some point a degree helps break into a leadership role. But always not necessary! Skills, knowledge, abilities, and soft skills are all necessary!

Great advice Jim.

What I learned from my journey so far and I think is a common understanding, is that attitude is everything. I believe one can polish his or her attitude through work experience; observe the people around you, identify why some people has a certain gravity about them while others do not. Over time you'll start to identify types of working attitude, keep filtering them down until you find something you can learn about yourself, then apply or discard accordingly. Young people should throw themselves out there more. I started my career at 19, and I have no regrets about how I spent my time in order to put myself in the current situation.

I clicked on this because its a David Bombal video and got straight energy and great takeaways. David, thanks for making your channel about more than just configuring devices and learning tech. As a escalation resource at a major IT vendor-- I can say from experience that this conversation is ripe with good life and work skills whether you want to be in InfoSec or anywhere else. The best people I work with are the ones that are curious and fearless to ask up.

This was a great interview. Her point about still adding in progress certs to your resume stuck with me. That way you can still show you are learning even if you don't have the cert to prove it.

Thank you for this video. I wish I had known this before trying to switch to the cyber security field. One year ago I spent U$7k to get a certificate from a prestigious school, there was almost nothing technical in the course and I still haven't found an entry level job in cybersecurity. Now I am focusing in learning skills and widely recognized certifications in this field. I hope in 2023 I can get a job in the filed. Thanks

I worked for a company once that lost a contract to a newer company. That newer company called me up and asked me how much I was making. I thought... "Can they legally ask that?" I didn't want to rock the boat too hard, so I answered it. He said, let me see if we can get you more. They came back with a 20% pay increase...I was elated. That was, by far, the best company that I ever worked for.
@corail532 жыл бұрын
When job hopping - you can eventually start answering that question - give a higher number - they will come back with a we can't do that but this - then you can find somewhere in the middle - your goal is to get around that 20% (or close enough to it) everytime you hop.

For a long time I didn't want to get into security because I viewed it as learning how to do something illegal. Now I view it like learning how to be a surgeon. I know people say you don't need a degree to get some of these types of jobs and I am not necessarily only speaking to infosec or IT jobs when I say this but there are a lot of companies that want a 4 year degree as a basic qualification. As in, your application is thrown out before even being given an opportunity to interview. So yes you can get these jobs, but without a degree, the opportunities are not as vast as the amount of job openings present for those without it. I am currently going back to school at 36 years old to get a bachelor's in general studies with a software development focus just to have a degree that I don't necessarily need.

Cybersecurity job is best for experienced IT Professionals but not to fresh graduates .It's my opinion and difference of opinion accepted . edit:Infosec is in my opinion one of the best to learn scrap to expert learning .

Great guest! I think I'm going to have to reconsider how I do my cover letters. I definitely appreciated the insight on how you present yourself to the world. A well pressed shirt will make you stand out. In my early years in IT I was the only guy in the service desk wearing a suit. This was the catalyst to becoming the main point of contact for the C level suite and upper management, this helped me stand within earshot of some really big decisions the company was faced with, I learned how these were made and why.
