Great video! His remarks mentioning that refs making the trends right now and how it should be the fencers who make the trends is very informative about the current state of the sport. Thanks for bringing us such great content!

Would be same for any team match with 2 referees that keep rotating every 2 legs…

@@jeromeguth4201 oooo that's true ☝ I've had team bouts where me and the other ref called similar actions different ways in the different legs, not ideal for the fencers 😵 Sometimes I wish there was a way to sort of troubleshoot or do like "game balancing" with the other referee before the match to bring the calls into consistency between the two of you

Jerome has been an amazing referee since I was DIV1 competitive in the early 2010's - he was the one at the NAC you prayed for, most fair match possible under him. When I lived in NJ I went to visit AFFA, every teen they had in Sabre was an NCAA All-star in the making, truly incredible work by him and Aleks. He's also one of the most intelligent people in fencing; Japan made some Steph Curry + Lebron James level draft picks by snatching up Jerome and Erwann.

Ive watched your two interview videos twice fully. So interesting to hear from these experts in the field. Please keep this long form coming. There is nothing like this available out there unless you happen to go for a beer with one of these people randomly. Well done!!!

Even fencing at a low level like I currently do, I've been finding I win much more often when I adjust how I fence to do things that the referee will "See" and avoid doing things that they don't "see." I earned my American rating at a tournament because I was the first to recognize in my pools that attack in prep. was not being called at all and so I stopped doing it and placed higher in bracket seeding than the actual top seed for the Sabre event. That shouldn't happen. Yes, the referee is an aspect of the game and I played that to my advantage, but I shouldn't be fencing the referee. I should be fencing my opponent.

26:05 I hope that attack into preperations against too long delayed marching attacks (which in truth are preperations with a reactive counterattack to the attack into preperation), get rebalanced to be more viable/reliable in whatever way. A reactive counterattack with a double light should not have priority simply because of forward motion... *speaking about "outsite the 4m" situations Good video. 😊 Also controversial take, but even as a non native english speaker, i think fencing judging should be done in english not french, to make it more transparent to viewers, and newer fencers.
