How about Top Five Poorly Sold Games That Later Found Success. So here's something I hope you do because there's a game that fits here that seriously needs attention despite poor sales for a game that came out recently, and it's also an interesting topic. The game I'm talking about is 13 Sentinels, a PS4 Exclusive RTS/Visual Novel that has gone under the radar due to poor marketing on Atlus' part and Sony actively smothering it from being seen with a lot of Japanese games I noticed. While I can't say in the West, in Japan this game sold pretty poorly with 35,000 copies at first and could've been seen as a lost, but after the legends that Masuhiro Sakurai and Yoko Taro praised and love the game and help advertise the game more then Atlus did, it managed to nearly triple the sales and reach over 100,000 copies. Such an inspiring too, because it does show how if the right people manage to give the game attention surely needed, it can turn a grim situation around. Of course many will be pointing Among Us, but I really do think 13 Sentinels need the extra attention for how good the game is.

What happened with Dead Rising 4 was an absolute clusterfuck of mismanagement and executive nonsense. Capcom Vancouver were initially given permission to make the next game in the series by Capcom as their past work had impressed Capcom. So much so that Capcom gave them an enormous amount of freedom and only checked back every now and again to see how things were coming along. I think the first time they showed something to the Japanese execs, they were impressed, but then the CEO of Capcom Vancouver left and was replaced by someone who didn't like the direction the game was going. So hey basically had to start over again and when they showed a new demo to Capcom, they looked at it and effectively said "What the hell is this shit?! This... This is NOT Dead Rising." but Capcom allowed them more time to work things out and let them off the hook. Development started getting pulled in a lot of different directions until eventually I think Capcom Japan fired the creative director for general incompetence (I think the director was also showing false trailers to Capcom to cover up how much of a mess the game was turning into). Capcom, once again, gave the studio another chance. Capcom Vancouver then got a new director for the project that had formerly worked as a director at Ubisoft. Guess what his suggestions for the project were? "We need scalable buildings, the game needs to be open world, also a main part of the game should be going around the world to these map stations that you climb up and turn on. Also there should be stealth." I'm...not even kidding. Their new director's "vision" was to turn it into another entry into the Ubisoft: The Game series (Of the Assassin's Creed flavour). This went over really poorly with Capcom Japan and they canned the whole project, feeling their IP was not in as good hands as they thought. Then Capcom Vancouver went out of business, with the majority of the former workers holding no ill will towards Capcom Japan recognizing it was the higher ups at Capcom Vancouver (the various ones that came and went) that caused the project to fail... No wait I think this turned into Dead Rising 5's development hell story at some point...

@xtiandg09144 жыл бұрын
Yes, Ar Tonelico 2 probably should be number 1 for the North America version, which contained a potentially game-breaking bug that the PAL and Japanese version don't have due to sloppy coding the NIS America did which pissed me off considering the effort GUST made for the game. 3:43 Still trying to wrap my head around what the DR4 devs were even referring to when they said they wanted to “return to the series roots.” I mean yeah, they brought back Frank and it’s set in Willamette again, but why was going back to their roots considered so vital anyway? It’s not like the gameplay strayed very far from the original idea by that point. Ironically, the amount of downgraded and removed features is what alienates DR4 from the series roots.
@sarafontanini70514 жыл бұрын
another issue with DMC2 is that it lacks something small but vital for the franchise's identity: the bosses don't talk. the ONLY antagonist in the entire game who speaks is the main antagonist, every other boss? Not a word, not even the one who has lore about being an ancient rival of Dante's father but NAH we can't have him TALK, so all the bosses seemingly come out of nowhere and have no story or personality to them. Think about how different DMC1 would be if every boss' introductory cutscene cut out all the dialogue. it's a small thing, as I said, but its a pretty noticible flaw indicative of howw the devs didn't really care all that much about how the first game did things.

DMC Devil May Cry more annoys and frustrates fans due to the creative choices they made, though the gameplay at least can be fun. It at least has parts people like to play. Devil May Cry 2 is just boring due to lack of difficulty, the boring level design, how they portrayed Dante, and other things. Which game is worse depends on if you find boring games worse than frustrating game decisions. Though 2 is the reason why 3 didn’t sell as much early on.

Reggie had to tweet about people needing to watch the treehouse for a big announcement for literally anyone to actually know Metroid Samus Returns was a game that was coming out. @amirgarcia5474 жыл бұрын
@Geralt of Trivia Apples to oranges, pally. The difference between all of those things is the execution, which TLOU2 entirely botched. Spec Ops works because it’s meant to be a deconstruction of FPS’s and so makes you play as an unlikable and delusional asshole who *thinks* he’s the hero, but actually isn’t. Shadow of the Colossus works because its twist doesn’t come until the very end of the game, so up until that point you wouldn’t know the truth about the colossi unless you were spoiled beforehand. And lastly, the first TLOU1’s ending worked because it reinforced the game’s main theme (that the characters aren’t good people, but simply survivors in a shitty and unforgiving world) and potentially left the door open for a sequel as well. Meanwhile TLOU2 tries to tell you how much of a bad person you are for murdering people and aninals despite it being the only option to dispatch of them. At least stealth games give you the option to incapacitate enemies. Hell, even Undertale did this way better because you have the choice to spare monsters instead of killing them, so when it demeans you for murdering enemies left and right, it’s *actually* your fault. Instead of the game trying to poorly convince you that it is.
@tacohands42034 жыл бұрын
I never took the last of us 2 as trying to demean you or make you feel bad. I took it as, there are always two sides to every story, and each story has its own lives in it. I think the last of us 2 does an amazing job of creating many many situations from both angles, and then showing that nothing, and I mean nothing. Is black and white. And also, if you beat the game. You actually get to the point to where revenge has actually saved many peoples lives and potentially started a revolution for maybe some good people. Again. I think people mistook what this game is going for, but again. It always comes down to opinion! That’s the bitch of art! No one is technically right or wrong. It’s all how it speaks to you personally
@amirgarcia5474 жыл бұрын
@Geralt of Trivia No, because like I said, they handled those aspects well because they knew what it wanted to be. One is a deconstruction, and the other tries to entirely change how you’ve viewed the game up until that point. TLOU2 on the other hand wears its themes of the cycle of revenge and it creating unnecessary violence on its sleeve from beginning to end, and thusly suffers as a result due to not giving the player a choice to combat it. Instead, it boils down to “you did this bad thing despite being given no other alternative, so you should feel bad!!!” And there’s scripted events in the game where you can’t progress without killing others, such as Abby’s dog and her friends, but sure, let’s pretend that you can go through the entire game being a pacifist. And while I haven’t played Ghost of Tsushima, from what I understand in that game you have the option to fight honorably, and fighting stealthily or picking off enemies in sneaky ways is generally seen as dishonorable. I’m more so talking about traditional stealth games such as MGS or Splinter Cell, where you can take out enemies without pumping bullets into them or hacking them to pieces, unlike in TLOU. Also, imagery and sound design alone won’t fully convey the truth behind the colossi until it reveals it near the end. Unless, like I said, you were spoiled beforehand. And last but not least, it doesn’t matter whether a character is “pre-written” or not if the game is going to act morally superior to you without giving the option to go a different route. Frisk might be a blank slate and Ellie a pre-established character, but Undertale calling you a monster or making you feel guilty for your actions works because you have an option to change them at any point in the game. But in TLOu2, by making the story entirely linear and robbing any form of player agency whatsoever, it creates a dissonance between the gameplay and the story due to one entirely contradicting the other. I’m not saying TLOU2 100% needed narrative choices, since the first game worked entirely fine without them, even with its ending. But if you’re gonna try and make the player feel guilt yet make the game equivalent to a movie, then it might as well be deep as a puddle as a result. It’s ironc that you’d have a character from a game as your avatar that actually allows you to be either as bad or good as the game makes you out to be based on your actions, but I digress. I’ll just simply leave you with this overly long comment you most likely won’t read and big you adieu.
@Gannon3734 жыл бұрын
@Geralt of Trivia People got so stuck on this idea that the game was somehow judging them as a person that they lost all ability to actually look at the game's story beyond that, and I have no idea why. Personally I think it did a better job of communicating its themes than Spec Ops, which I also really like.
@marhawkman3034 жыл бұрын
@@Gannon373 I think the core of the issue is that in TLOU2 the game TALKS about how choices matter and how you don't have to hurt others.... while enforcing a linear narrative. The story just feels like it's asking you to make choices, but only giving you one option... and that option is a bad choice. Spec Ops wasn't about choice, but about morality and whether you can justify your actions. Also... the story's tone is different in that you don't(as the player) actually know how many atrocities you've committed. That's not revealed until the ending.

The one sequel I absolutely hate, to this day, was Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of a New World/ Knights of Ratatosk. It took away every single thing that made the original so compelling, and added two extremely bland main characters. Instead of permanent party members, added monsters that worked as Pokémon/Digimon partners, no open world map, and then completely changed elements of the first instalment to add their own "new" spirits and summons that drove the plot, who were supposedly there "all along". I find it to be one of the only games that I can't justify it's existence simply because they just added a completely new world that piggybacked off of the original and added an ending that made little to no sense in regards to the world they had set up. I get frustrated just thinking about it.

Your evaluation of Destiny 2 is... fair. It hurts to hear, since I love this game (just look at my profile picture of my Titan), but I can't deny that they made mistakes along the way... especially during its early years. I'd blame Activision rushing them... but at the same time, Bungie can't avoid all of the blame. It's a better game, now, and with its expansion releasing next week, I think it's going to get even better... unless I'm dead wrong.

Big fan of LOUI2 here, who can't resist to give a long defense speech ;). People have all the right to be disappointed and I'm not claiming there is something wrong or bad about that, but I can't help but feel RabbidLuigi oversimplified the themes. Calling LOU2 a "simple revenge plot", and nothing more, is like calling the Godfather a simple "mafia is bad" plot, Last Airbender a simple "good guys take down bad guys" plot, or saying the ending of LOU1 is a simple "don't be selfish" message shoved down your throat. The story is a morally gray one that shows how 'good' and 'bad' are a matter of perspective. Common enemies to Ellie might be close to someone else and vice versa. The game cleverly uses your love for Joel as a means to encourage Ellie to take drastic actions, because that's what I wanted to do too: kill the bastards that took down Joel. But during Abby's campaign, I started to care about her and her friends, letting go of that initial anger and ask myself whether it was really all that justified to take them all down. Instead of choosing a side, it shows both sides of the story with no clear good or bad guy. It also deals with themes of dealing with trauma, giving things a place and finding new meaning. As you see with Abby, she learned that killing Joel solved nothing for her later down the line. From her point of view, there is nothing to be gained to continue the pursuit with Ellie. Ellie unfortunately wasn't able to let go due to the painfully accurate way this game portrays her PTSD: she wasn't able to life a normal life due to the endless flashbacks, no matter how hard she tried. People with severe PTSD often can feel like hurting those who were responsible for the pain might be a way to reduce/relieve the pain. It's only in the very end, when the forceful memories stop being of Joel suffering and change into a peaceful memory with Joel, that she is able to snap back to reality and take a moment to cry it out. Realizing how she gains nothing from fighting Abby. Ellie just wanted the flashbacks to go away, letting go and life a normal life, but she wasn't able to. Abby tried to move on after her revenge, but couldn't for the longest time. It's really a journey about 2 opposite, yet similar, characters that learn to accept their traumas and move on. Trying to find meanings in new things after years of emptiness and anger. So yeah. Had to throw that out.

For me the most disappointing sequel that I’ve played would have to be Drakengard 2, the cutscenes in-between levels were just terrible: static avatars instead of animated, the characters were all boring except for the main guy and the Dragon and the man guy’s secret origin (that he was the child of the previous bad guy and his lady love who fused into one being and was raised by that guy’s Black Dragon who in turn killed his mother’s parents) wasn’t even touched on in the game but in some obscure art book that never made it out of Japan! Honourable mention: Life is Strange 2. Don't get me wrong - I liked the second game. But it is so far removed from LIS 1 that it pretty much shouldn't even be in the same franchise. LIS was a cute, slightly cringey, story between two friends (and potentially lovers) which becomes an emotional journey which delves into pretty traumatic discussions. Lis 2 is just nothing but horrific torment and trauma for the protagonists the entire time. There are hardly ever any good moments between any of the characters. The beginning of episode 5 was probably the only happy part of the entire game

12:50 I agree. FACT is they PLANNED to have it with Joel initially surviving the attack and for Ellie to make that choice to go out and attack to STOP and PREVENT a 2nd attack, where at the end it was supposed to come to the conclusion "you'd just come after us still". Where depending how you treated the living, Joel is saved by one the people you spared or killed by the same person or just dies of his wounds to show the depth of compassion.

Hmmm so maybe part of the reason for the story feeling a bit nonsensical is that it was originally written with more nuance, but they didn't have time to actually make the game that complex? If the final confrontation in the game was a reflection of player choices and had multiple meaningfully different ways to play out? hmm....
@stoagymahalo52684 жыл бұрын
@@marhawkman303 Oh right. To explain, it wouldn't have been so intricate, but fact is the "otherside" would have originally played out as Joel and Ellie gameplay (where I read supposed to been flashbacks or parallels) Where I'm sure those decision based parts were the wishes if completing, but the fact is the main portion was changed to pandering considering Sony's recent "influence" occuring the last 3 years were offputting so they instead doubled down. I mean the Multiplayer doesn't feel "rushed" but you can clearly see points where if you pictured Joel and Ellie instead of (I forget those 2 body swapped character s' names) their replacements in the situation, it make more sense toward the end with Ellie sitting down with a Guitar. Where she started to learn to be more guarded and protective over those she loves, GAH I wish I could break it down more better but it really was a great romp through the who situation where the "choice" would have came down to either shooting the villain and follow Joel with (audio datamined) Ellie saying "you'll just come after us." and popping a round in the bad guy/girl or sparing and I forget what happened with that. BUT instead, it was a complete revamp of story since they had mechanics and graphics down, it was the pressure on the writing staff to "sell more to the minority groups" simply because the story was already written up and they were tasked to fillin the minor roles and scenes. It was a huge report just to be taken down because those same writers went all over social media bashing the report as anti this and that, it just saddens me the road that game went down -_-. Tho that's the part I was more bummed over about and totally get where you're coming from still.

Dead Space 1 had an amazing story and a terrifying atmosphere that kept you on your toes, with Dead Space 2 having a great story but they eased up on the horror, but it was still there. Dead Space 3 had a interesting but good story, but it feels like they removed the true terror and atmosphere that made Dead Space so great and they made it so paying with real money got you with better stuff in the game. I doubt it but if they do make another Dead Space game, please let it be more like the original.

of cours eone of the things that screwed over 4 was how they kinda decided that this corrupt business executive who seemed to be being built up as the ultimate big bad should instead be killed off in DR3 (and also remove her evil aspects for no reason) in order to make the girl frank helps survive in the first game into some sort of antagonist for some reason? I could be misremembering anyway the point is that they kinda fucked up a decently well placed building block for the story to follow through only to shit all over it for something much weaker.

The reason why Destiny 2 came out so soon after Destiny 1 and all of the other issues they had at launch is because of Activision. Activision had a contract for them saying that they needed to release a new game every 3 years, and they were the ones who forced Bungie to make Eververse as predatory as it was. Luckily Bungie left Activision and was able to keep a hold of Destiny's IP and are focusing on improving and supporting D2 instead of trying to release D3. Activision just loves ruining franchises with their Predatory practices.

Honestly I don't think any Trails game should be anywhere near a list like this. Trails in the Sky The 3rd is easily my least favorite of the games brought over to the west and even that game is still a great RPG in its own right. As for Cold Steel 2, I think a lot of people took issue with the fact that despite the game taking place in war time, not very much death was actually seen and outside of a few setbacks, things did seem to go very well for our protagonists throughout the adventure. Personally though this didn't bother me, since there was an actual reason for why things were going so well for us and by the end, the game pretty much tells us that we were being played like a goddamn fiddle from the very beginning.

If it were up to me TLOU2 would definitely be #1, since I don’t think I’ve ever been more let down by a game due to TLOU1 being one of my favorite games I’ve ever played. But Pro Skater 5 is probably the biggest downgrade when it comes to a sequel within a series, so I can see why that’d claim the gold. I’ll admit, in a technical/gameplay aspect, TLOU2 isn’t all that bad and actually quite impressive. But that story and writing...holy moly, is it dogshiet... The best way to sum it up is what I wrote in an old KZbin comment, which’s “It’s like a movie that tries to fault the viewer for their actions, while at the same time preaching about how smart it is while making so many textbook mistakes in writing 101 that you’d wonder how this even made it past the drafting phase.”
@marhawkman3034 жыл бұрын
I heard the story got a massive re-write part way through development. Apparently the original plan was to have a branching narrative that cared about player choices, but instead of finishing that they scrapped most of the story and scrambled to cobble together a passable story on a tight deadline. Normally videogame crunch is just kidna... there, but in this case it's fully the fault of management pushing an edict for a major change late in development.

I know the FDA is the food and drug administration, but I really don't ever think of them as associated with anything other than food. So hearing "this hair care product is approved by the FDA" always throws me for a loop. I feel like disappointing sequels are easy to end up doing, because depending on your reputation, you might need to *exceed* the original game to not be disappointing. You can't just squish out the same thing again. It's funny, because I recently saw someone talking about how New Super Mario Bros was one of the best games on whichever console, I think it was the Wii. But in my opinion, that was a disappointing game. Not because it was bad, no, it followed the tried and true formula of the original Mario games and was perfectly serviceable. It's disappointing because it's coming off the back of games like Sunshine and Galaxy, or if you want to look at 2d games, we've already gotten the far superior Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island. Even Galaxy 2 was a disappointment to me personally because it had no story substance, mario head spaceship hub was unimpressive, and tubba blubba luma felt like a joke. But it's serviceable, it didn't kill or *almost* kill the franchise, so it doesn't go on a list like this. Disappointment is comparative though, and I don't know that DMC2, for example, fits without hindsight. Was DMC1 popular enough and quality enough for DMC2 to really be a disappointment, or does it only feel disappointing because we know where the series has gone since then? Wouldn't that make DMC2 more of a disappointing prequel? ...are disappointing prequels interesting enough of a video topic?
