For those of you wondering about the "Extra Button" - SAAB basically wired the car with an extra wire - and you could connect whatever after-market thing you wanted. Hence the "Extra" button.

In 1978 my father was hired by SAAB-Scania here in the USA aa s district manager ... and he brought home this funny looking little car ... (4) headlights ... curved windshield ... a hood that opened at the back and tilted forward ... and ... a little "badge" three places on the car ... "Turbo"!!!! ... and I got to drive it!!!! ... 1st gear not too fast ... but shift into 2nd and ... ZOOM!!! ... that car surprised a lot of people as I blew by them !!!! I still have a 91' 900 Conv Turbo ... sitting in my garage today.

I looked up the 'extra' switch - it's simply an extra switch that you can hook something up to, doesn't do anything on its own.

He basically does what an intercooler does on a normal turbo, it cools the cylinder down so that ignition spark can be stronger colder air equals more dense air equals a stronger spark
@Stroke9992 жыл бұрын
@@aeropilot4419 Use pure oxygen for strongest spark. Or Nitrous oxide, pure oxygen causes a preignition in the chamber and it explodes the engine.

This is really a joke . There is one thing that SAAB cars had some things that most aircraft has even to this day . That is a Semi-monocot body . There was also the the brakes . It was the one of the first cars that had use of an aircraft wind tunnel and the arrow dynamics of an aircraft . So there is a lot of things that the SAAB cars do share with the aircraft . The arrow dynamics has a lot to do with the amount of HP needed and the weight of the car . For instance arrow dynamics will let the car sustain a higher speed at less hp . The less weight of the car also contribute to less hp going up hill . If both contribute to the cause of efficacy then the car dont need 100 hp to achieve the same thing as a 25 hp can do . This is why these cars was real economy cars . These cars got 40 + MPG with a 2 stroke engine and when they put in the V4 1.7 ford engines in them then the fuel economy ether stayed the same with more power and more power means faster times or speed . This is why these cars was in all the road rallies and races .

The word "turbo" became famous in the 80's because of F1 and rallying. It had little or nothing to do with Saab.

The 99 was the first car for the masses to have a turbocharger
@leoarc1061 Жыл бұрын
@ARIES6181 I don't know anyone who owned a 99. They didn't make that many relatively speaking. Regardless, the point is that the marketing of the word "turbo" in the 80s came from F1 and Rallying, not from Saab's 99 or any other road going vehicle.
@theretroblondie3 ай бұрын
@@leoarc1061I'm sure F1 and the rally circuit didn't hurt any, but discounting the Swedes contribution (both Saab and Volvo) to turbo engine development is quite disingenuous. Saab isn't famous for the 99 and 900 Turbo's for nothing.
