Great reaction to such a great movie! Some notes: About the destruction of the skunkworks plane at the beginning, from what I remember a friend of mine telling me years ago (and he was an aerospace engineer who had worked on high speed test flight programs for a couple of decades or so) a lot of the more advanced high speed test planes under development at the time were being designed with what he called a canister ejection system, where the plan was the sealed cockpit would be jettisoned by the ejection system with the pilot inside and a series of high tensile parachutes would deploy one at a time and slow the canister down before being torn away until it had slowed enough that the pilot would be ejected from the canister and parachute to earth as normal. I suppose that this futuristic plane would be equipped with a similar sort of system. It's cool to see Bob in an F-18, since we saw the actor's, Lewis Pullman's, real life dad Bill Pullman in Independence Day where he was a former F-18 pilot who gets back in the cockpit again. The amusing thing for me that almost no one seems to get is that Hangman is Maverick as he would have been if he had been flying one of the typical single-seat fighters instead of the two-seat F-14s used in the original Top Gun. The main thing that kept Maverick from being what Hangman was is that Mav always had Goose, who was his conscience in some ways, riding brakes on Mav's worst impulses and making them not so bad. Mav was responsible to and for Goose, and since Goose was his only family Mav usually held himself in check so he wouldn't let Goose down. Hangman didn't have a back seater to be responsible to and for, so he could go all out to prove he was the best he could be and better than everyone else, which justly earned him his callsign: because he'd always hang you out to dry to prove you weren't as good as he was. Luckily, and thankfully, Hangman learned the important lesson about teamwork through Mav, who uniquely understood Hangman's driven personality. Hangman's character development was a very well done part of the movie too. In an early script, Hangman was to be Ice's son. I'm glad they scrapped that. Speaking of Ice, Val Kilmer, of course, had been fighting throat cancer in real life, but it was important to have him in this movie and he wanted to be there. His voice in the scenes was a programmed synthesized voice, but it was perfectly his voice as it might be. It was so good to see them as such close friends, and to know that Ice had constantly been Mav's guardian angel, keeping him in the service no matter what Mav did to get himself dismissed. And it showed a lot of how well Ice really understood Mav, and explains a lot of Mav's behaviors in the early movie. Mav is basically suicidally depressed when the movie starts, but he's not the suicidal type, so he looks for situations where he can go out doing what he does best, but he fights to survive anyway because that is his nature. Ignoring how he feels (typical man, I know) he focuses on something else that he can control: flying. All Mav has is the service. He has no family. Even Goose's family he's not close to, though we only learn why as the movie advances. The Navy and the people he works with, best shown in Hondo, are the only family he has. So he pushes beyond Mach 10 because the project is going to be shut down and he'll lose the team/family he's been working with and, knowing as he does that Ice has been fighting cancer, he is aware that his long-term guardian angel might not be able to keep him where he needs to be. His time is running out, and he's well aware of that, so if he stays in pure Maverick mode and pushes juuust a bit more, and a bit more again, then maybe he can go out doing what he loves before that is taken away from him too. So he does. But he survives. And his guardian angel is still able to shift him back to someplace he needs to be. And, whether this was Ice's grand plan knowing who all from Pete's history was there or not, Mav ends up where he needs to be to reestablish a will to live beyond the military. Reestablishment of his old family with Rooster. Rediscovery and, much more importantly, a new appreciation of an old flame (mentioned but never seen in the original movie). And suddenly Mav has every reason to not die in the cockpit. So, of course, he must go and do something that could very easily make him die in the cockpit. In a Hollyweird full of shallow and dull movies and shows with shallow, poorly done scripts and no actual thought behind them and shallow, unrealistic characters who only change in shallow ways if at all, a movie of this great depth made me so happy to see. I can watch it again and again and love it still. So very well done. For all the concerns I've had for Tom Cruise's weirdnesses in the past, he is absolutely a glorious hero for making this movie happen.

By the way for those that dont know, the SR-72 has been confirmed to be in production made by skunk works and they went to skunk works to have the design of the plane he used to go Mach 10 without knowing that skunk works was actually making the SR-72 and they let them use what the plane is suppose to look like. The SR-72 will go Mach 6 and have a LAWS laser on it for a weapon, we are in the future ladies and gentlemen.

Willing to bet when we get a look at the SR-72 it won't look like the Darkstar. The Darkstar is a mess, recessed windows, non-conformal canopy, way too much canopy, exposed exhaust. And it diesn't make senss to arm the -72, SR means its surveillance, not a fighter, not ground attack, and given its speed, it will have a turning radius the size of a continent. By the time it lines up a target it will have gone past it. Besides, the LAWS laser is a Navy weapon, and the -72 will doubtless be part of the Air Force.

This movie and the original should be required watching for anyone even considering doing a sequel. Especially so for a sequel to an older movie or franchise. It also proves that it's possible to really make a good sequel to something that had been through to be too old for a sequel. Hopefully it helps to reduce the amount of remakes and gets more good sequels to fan favorite movies made. Note on the Darkstar: Lockheed actually designed and built the Darkstar prop, doing so as if they were actually going to make a functional mach 10 manned aircraft. Their actual SR-72 project is a mach 6+ drone. Apparently, it earned the nickname "Darkstar" after the one in this movie.

The Darkstar also known as Lockheed Martin Darkstar, is a hypersonic Mach 10+ capable aircraft flown by Pete Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick. History The Darkstar was supposed to be a proposed prototype hypersonic aircraft designed by the Navy that Maverick was assigned to fly to achieve Mach 09 on a particular date. However, it turns out that Chester Cain has decided to cancel the program to fund drone projects because he said the aircraft had fell short of its contract threshold. The contract threshold was Mach 10. As a result, Maverick, wanting to save the program from cancellation, decides to put the aircraft to Mach 10. Although he successfully is able to reach Mach 10, he decides to push the prototype beyond limits, which causes the prototype to be destroyed. And that's about all I know of the Craft in the very beginning.

You may not like Hngman but he is the quinessential pilot and an example of what a real pilot is like in the Navy. Hangman knows Roosters weakness ( too slow, indecisive, won't fly on the edge) and exposes it like ripping a bandaid off a scab... Rooster has two actions he can do... correct it or fly cargo planes. Hangman in all sense is trying to get him through this...

The one glaring error in this film's story, is that the "Darkstar" (SR-72) is/will be a U.S. Air Force asset ..... NOT a Navy asset. So, Maverick has no real business flying in this aircraft.

I always found that part of the movie interesting. It doesn't make sense. Has nothing to do with Top Gun. The Navy would never build planes like that. It's always been an Air Force gig. However. In real life. He could've been a Lockheed contractor. And a Navy Reservist. But, smoking a plane like that going over the original Mach 10 without permission. Yeah, his career would be over. Most likely jail.
@scottdarden3091

One glaring error as a Navy veteran is this mission would never have involved pilots! This would have been the Tomahawks or a Predator drone with AGM -114 Hellfire or Reaper drone with GBU -12 Pathway Lazer guided bombs. Also the missiles guarding the site are radar guided. Pilots popping flares would have no effect they would need chaf. And pilots don't pin their wings to a coffin. That is strictly a SEAL thing. I might add I doubt there would be a F-14 sitting in a hanger fully loaded with fuel ammo for the cannon and missile. They either didn't listen to the technical advisor at all or just didn't have one the entire movie is Hollywood BS
