The val kilmer scene made me cry in the theaters. My dad was going threw cancer at the same time when this movie came out and I use to watch Val kilmer films all the time as a kid with my dad. Penny Benjamin is mentioned in the first movie during the chew out scene on the carrier, when his commander reads him the riot act, including flying over an Admiral Daughters house. The bar that they show was built just for the movie on North Island Naval Air Station, in Coronado, CA. They bulldozed it down after filming with most of the props still inside! The F-14 Tomcat fighter was borrowed from the San Diego Air and Space Museum and is currently sitting at their Annex at Gillespie Field, east of San Diego. Just some crazy local facts! Glad you loved it!

Notice how Rooster said "Talk to me, Dad" like how Maverick says "Talk to me, Goose". But when Rooster said it during the mission, Maverick sort of answered, and Rooster responded to what Maverick had taught him earlier. Obviously, this shows how Maverick has become Rooster's dad, in a way--a father-figure at the very least.

I like how Phoenix was handled. Movies these days can be annoying in how they handle things like women in nontraditional roles, but Phoenix is believable and likable. Somehow she just seems like how I would expect a woman to be in such a situation, and it all feels quite natural and real, not fake or forced in any way. Going into this, I was expecting the worst because Hollywood ain't what it used to be, but I like this version of Hollywood. This movie reminds me all over again, in 2022, why I ever loved movies to begin with. It had been a while since I had bothered to watch one.

The difference between the volleyball scene in the original and the football scene in this is the goals. What seems to always get me is the "talk to me, Goose/Dad" and we get a heavenly shot or a disembodied voice talks to the character. Maybe you see them at Iceman's funeral. Especially Slider who was Iceman's RIO and best friend in the first movie. Would Tim Robbins want to make a cameo as Merlin? By far the best movie of the year by a nautical mile. Probably the best movie of the decade.

I loved that in Maverick and the original we start with showing some love for the ground crews, who don't get as much attention as they deserve in movies or the real world. Also, if Maverick had Warlock at his side, pointing out when not to answer the rhetorical questions from superior officers, he probably would be an Admiral already.

he didnt want to be an admiral anyway - he prefers to fly and once you get to flag rank your not flying anymore

There is a reason the cinematography was so great in this movie since most of the flying sequences were shot for real in flight

Seeing it in theaters was epic. I went alone but the theater was packed with older people. It was so good we all applauded at the end with a standing ovation.

29:31 - You got it. the StarWars references are there. Also in the 1986 movie - the way the dogfights were shot.

I suspect that I will always love the original more (I was thirteen when it came out, and that kind of nostalgia is hard to beat), but this is an objectively better movie.

A little trivia. If you remember the line about Maverick's faux pas ended with "..aaaand one low pass over an admirals daughter." He says wistfully, "Penny Benjamin." When "Top Gun" came out there when no women were fighter pilots. The first female Naval aviator actually flew F-14's, she died in a carrier accident. Edit: The actors did _NOT_ fly F/A-18s but they did all fly in the back of F/A-18Fs and all of their flying scenes were really pulling Gs and so on.

So nice to see you enjoyed this movie as much as I, and so many other people, did. This is a truly great movie. No politics, just a wonderfully nostalgic sequel that is truly entertaining. This movie is a great example of how good movies used to be. Thanks for sharing you reactions and thoughts on this great movie.

Shan's reaction was exactly the same as mine. The nostalgia of a really well written sequel that calls back to the first movie with elements that remind you the first movie happened. Then there was the cinematography. If you can take any frame of the movie and turn it into a perfectly professional shot photograph, the movie it's a masterpiece of cinematographical art. It's all in the lighting. Shan understands that. Good story. Good characters. Good dialogue, Good framing. Good lighting. Good everything makes good tears of joy. 8-)

Yay, I'm so glad you finally watched and reacted to this movie! Most KZbinrs jumped on this movie and posted their reactions within days of its release, so I saw everyone's videos a couple of months ago. Since then, I've seen the movie 5 times at the theater and once at home. Gladly watching your reaction with all the emotion. It brings me back to the first time I saw it. I cried along with you. If they bring this back to cinemas and you ever get a chance to see this on the big screen, PLEASE do it!

The two things that worked on the script. 1) The sutle foreshadowing. Example: They even have some F-14s. We aren't the only ones holding on to old relics. Then they use one of the old relics to escape. It happened in a a few parts ot he movie. 2) The perfect emotional roller coaster in the same scene or within a few minutes. Example: Ice telling Mav to let go and brings you down and then ends the scene with the who is the better pilot and punchline. Example: Mavs gets shot down. Rooster gets shot down and another downer. Then Mav runs and knocks down Rooster and you get You told me not to think.

Well if you like closeups: Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant in Notting Hill. If you haven't seen that it's worth a reaction. One of the great rom-coms, more rom than com I'd say, but still with plenty of com. The highlight for me is the emotional "choreography". Dramatic scene, comedic beat. Comedic scene, dramatic stinger. Action scene, drama and comedy mixed in. It does a great job with ramping tension, releasing tension, and keeping everything grounded. The emotional flow was spot on.

The P-51 Mustang at the end is actually Tom's own plane and it was him flying it there as well. He even took James Corvin up in it during his show a while back.

That was Tom Cruise's own plane in the end. The P-51 Mustang. That's the plane that saved them in the end of Saving Private Ryan. The one Tom Hanks referred to as "angels on our shoulders".

So happy you got to finally see this. There's a ton of behind the scenes stuff on YT talking about the production that I think you would love to dig into on your own. As for the movie and story telling in this, I appreciate how there is this constant theme with Maverick about how he's still fighting the scars from the first movie; "don't tell me, tell it to his family", "an explanation that his family will accept", and teach them "how to come home. And how to come home sir." You also have the theme of finding your place in the world as time moves on and the devaluing of your skill... which of course is something Tom Cruise I'm sure is fighting against as an actor. So much good stuff about this movie.
