If there was a trial of this sort in the UK with the charge 'conspiracy to collude with foreign forces to endanger national security,' or 'conspiracy to print and distribute seditious publications' as was the case in Hong Kong, whether they would face trial. Chances are they would. They would in Australia under 'foreign interference' laws.

A democratic government is a government rule of the people by the people for the people. By having election which repeatedly electing incompetent leader and making people lives getting worst and worst can we even call that democracy? Western election and parliamentary system doesn't equals to democracy, they don't listen to peoples, they just exist to service the rich and powerful. In contrast China has one party rule but their system is flexible, any public discontent can swiftly turns into change in government policies. In western countries you can change leader but not policy, but in china you can't change leaders but you can change policy. Democracy is not dead in Hong kong, Mainland China can provide democracy to Hong Kong.

@@Steve.Cheung Well generally we try to figure out why its happening in the first place. I don't recall a time in the West when a riot has been blamed on China - although I imagine if such an event occurred the CCP would naturally be rather miffed. That's what we Westerners have to deal with on a near monthly basis. Any time the CCP screws up, they need a fall guy and inevitably turn to foreigners.

The feelings that I am hearing expressed about this case on the streets and in the restaurants is that the sentencing is on the light side considering the potential damage that these people could have wreaked on HK had their plans succeeded. These 47 people can count themselves lucky as most will be out of prison relatively quickly and it will be interesting to see how many go overseas and how many stay. Another common comment about this case is about those who fled already without facing justice for their actions - a lot of people are not happy with the way they left their supporters to face the music whilst scurrying away themselves. Luckily HK has moved on from those dark times - hopefully these defendants will move on as well.

@@rafflesiaandfriends Russia is not winning either strategically or geopolitically. Small tactical gains while their economy is crumbling and they are bringing in North Korean troops as they loose 1,000 - 1,600 WIA, MIA or KIA each day. Russia has advanced a grand total distance of 34km in the Donbas in 1,000 days, Russia is not winning.

@@ShadowPhoenixMaximus The National Endowment for Democracy, NED, was active in Hong Kong. Michael Davis was at the Hong Kong University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is now at the NED. Harry Harding was at the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology. He is now at the NED. Two “democracy” worthies, Martin Lee and Anson Chan, received awards from the NED. Then there was Kong Tsung-gan. He was actually Brian Patrick Kern. He worked at the “Hong Kong Free Press”. Kern previously worked at Amnesty International. There appears to be no obvious connection between him and the NED. However, he did leave Hong Kong just prior to the introduction of the National Security Law. Mark Simon, a former member of the CIA, was the secretary of Jimmy Lai. Lai is now on trial for one count of conspiring to print seditious publications to incite hatred against the Chinese and Hong Kong governments. Together with two counts of collusion with foreign countries to call for sanctions and other hostile actions against China and Hong Kong. One of the reasons for the riots (sorry, “peaceful protest” as always described by Western politicians and media) in Hong Kong 2019 - 20 was to discredit the One Country, Two Systems policy, in order that Taiwan might not adopt the policy for unification.

Exact what is the point though? Doesn't full control go back to China in 2045? So they have 20 years of trying to align to the ex-coloniser and then it's formally part of China like any other region. Seems like the energy would be better spent fighting for job creation and services in a world where Hong Kong has less relevance when Singapore exists to be the intermediary between East asia and the West. And can Hong Kong as an independent state even survive? Without resources from China it'd be falling apart? So what is the realistic goals of these guys long term?
