How is it that Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell are never in the GOAT conversation ? There was no 3 point line in their era. Wilt Chamberlain owns more NBA than anybody that ever played in NBA. Bill Russell always had a better team. He won 11 NBA championships with the Celtics in 13 seasons.

Now do the playoffs.....you know, the post season? Where defenses are dialled up to 100, where the intensity is at its greatest, where the stakes are at their highest and where there are no bottom feeder teams to bully. Wilt did not excel to nearly the same extent in that environment. He faded in the playoffs then faded even more in the Finals. As the stakes rose, his performances fell. The opposite is true for Jordan, as the stakes rose so did his performances. Most 40 point playoff games: 1. 38 - Michael Jordan . . . . . 7. 13 - Wilt Chamberlain That says it all...everything you need to know about Wilt and the type of player he was. Am I saying he wasn't great? No, he's an all time great....he's just not THE greatest. That's Jordan.

These comparisons are meaningless without adjusting for league and team rate of play. During certain eras of the NBA, the game was slower and/or defenses better and/or rules favored defense more. Scoring a certain percent of your team's points (or maybe your opponent's points) is what matters. Even then it doesn't mean you were a better scorer, because you could be playing in an era when the rules and strategies favored one star player scoring all the points, vs. a team offense approach.
